Kevin Goldstein from Baseball prospectus has issued his top 100 prosects. Bumgarner was 3rd, Posey was 9th, Villalona was 47th & Alderson was 60th.

Initial thoughts are that it's great that Bumgarner & Posey are rated so highly. Villalona & Alderson seem very low though, and whilst they may not be as highly rated as our top two i find it strange that there's so much difference between the two sets.

Being the #47 or #60 prospect in baseball is not “very low.”

No, they’re not low in general terms, but lower than i’d have expected them to be. For example, Alderson’s ranking of 60 seems harsh, especially if you compare it with the ranking of Porcello 7 & Anderson at 24.

If I recall, there was another recent Top 100 list that left out Alderson altogether, so this doesn’t seem low to me, I guess. And Villalona, while he has a lot of potential, has an awfully long way to go, too.

you know there are 29 other teams in baseball, most of whom have a few prospects themselves? To have our 3rd and 4th best prospects ranked 47th and 60th in all of MLB is pretty damn good.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Feb 13, 2009 1:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, i’m aware of that, and i know it’s good, i was just commenting on my thoughts about the rankings, in particular the giants. Just felt that Alderson was low in comparison to your other prospects, prospects for other teams & the general lists from others.

Wow. I am really struck by the lack of non Giants NL West mentions. Only 4 candidates the in top 50 (#12, #27, #32 &# 46)?

There are quiet a few more than that.

D’backs have 2.
Dodgers have 5
Rockies have 3
Padres have 3

by CTGiant on Feb 13, 2009 2:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes the top 100 turn out about right (around 13% give or take)

Aside from the Bum’s Martin at #59 8 of the 13 you mention show up from lower 64 on down (basically the bottom 1/3 of the list). Of course that and $4 will let a guy buy a cup of coffee.

Villalona seems about right. So does Alderson, though you could make the case he could be higher, but you could also make the case Porcello should be lower.

Posey at 9 seems too high……especially when Matt Wieters is so effin awesome and he’s #1 I’m guessing? Or Price….

by Hobbes2d on Feb 13, 2009 12:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Huh

Wieters is ranked #1.

If Wieters is “so effin awesome” and ranked #1 then why is Posey too high at 9?

by slcgiant on Feb 13, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You really think Posey is the 9th best prospect in all of baseball?

by Hobbes2d on Feb 13, 2009 2:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

seems reasonable.

He’s getting Joe Mauer comps from some, for what it’s worth.

I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.

by oldjacket on Feb 13, 2009 2:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

So did Kyle Skipworth

For what that’s worth.

by Hobbes2d on Feb 13, 2009 3:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Posey’s been praised far more consistently than Skipworth.

If Wieters is "so effin awesome" and ranked #1 then why is Posey too high at 9?

Well at this point wieters should be much much higher than posey. His potential is definitely higher, IMO (power) and he’s performed very well. Posey has almost no regular season minor league experience, just fall or winter leagues. He is still a very good prospect, but I think ranked 9 overall is too high. I’ll reconsider after I see a season out of him. (Wieters is ready to contribute now, or almost ready)

This was my thinking as well

As Goldstein wrote for BP, Wieters might be the best catcher in all of baseball, and that includes the ML’s, RIGHT NOW. Buster Posey has played what like 2 weeks of minor league baseball and he’s still ranked in the top 10? And it’s not like his write up is filled with gigantic potential, so excuse me if I don’t think he’s worthy of being ranked that high yet.

He’s not better than Wieters, Price, Bum Bum, Heyward etc. And even guys who I feel are overrated like Maybin, Rasmus, Alvarez all have higher upside, and with the exception of Alvarez have more minor league experience and sampling to show what they might be capable of.

by Hobbes2d on Feb 14, 2009 4:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

what does Matt Weiters have to do with where Buster Posey should be ranked?

by FluLikeSymptoms on Feb 14, 2009 6:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. Weiters is #1 because there’s no number higher than that. A list does not measure the distance between integers. Is the gulf between 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 decidedly greater than the one between 8 and 9? No doubt. But lists don’t work that way. They just plod on one number at a time.

at this pace

with Wieters and Price both ending up in the big leagues by year’s end and if MadBum keeps rocking it…. can it be that we’ll have the #1 overall prospect in baseball?

Does anyone remember the Giants ever having the #1 overall prospect?

I sure hope it isn’t the proverbial Kiss of Death… I do recall the time we had someone widely considered the #1 pitching prospect in the game… and it pains me to think about it every time.

Which time are you talking about – Jesse Foppert or Salomon Torres?

Actually I have no idea whether Salomon Torres was ever ranked so high – I just remember him being really hyped, and I wanted to rub some salt into the wound ‘cause that’s the kind of guy I am.

I can’t remember anytime that we have ever had the #1 prospect in the last 20 years. I don’t even think Lincecum was ever the #1 prospect, there was always some positional player ahead of him.

for whatever this comparisson is worth...

In Keith Law’s top 100 list, he ranked our guys as follows:
MadBum 6th
Posey 8th
Alderson 26th
Villalona 34th

so he does tend to our like our guys (other than MadBum obviously) better than Goldstein

It is not how you start but how you finish

With Bumgarner, Posey and Alderson targeted for AA this summer it will be interesting to see how they rank after the season.

Glad someone’s giving props to Alderson.

because he never threw out of the windup during his HS career, last year, in Hi A ball, as a 19 year old, he threw with a new motion and led the league in ERA. I really think there’s room for growth on the fastball as he grows into it.

Bonds stands alone.

I was being sarcastic. I was always under the impression that Alderson had projection left on his fastball as well. That combined with his polish, command, and quality off-speed pitches I’m kinda surprised that he isn’t more highly thought of.
