What brought you to McC in the first place?

Grant's marquee topic today brought this to mind - why are we all here? Punch and pie are nowhere to be found. How did you find it and why did you stay?

I found my way to McC at the beginning of the 2008 season. I had actually wanted to start a Giants blog and was going about the process of doing so. I was perusing around other shan't-be-named Giants baseball related websites when I somehow stumbled into this place. Turns out I liked it, I liked it a lot.

In fact, I liked it so much I realized I would be an idiot to try to start my own lame blog and have to fight with this place for readership. In a stroke of brilliant self serving intuition, I decided my eventual goals of writing about Giants baseball and having someone actually _read_ it would be more more readily served here.

So here I am, a year later, still indulging myself in the captive audience of McC. Even with this very post I urinate in the ears (eyes?) of the listeners (readers?) and watch them happily lap it up.

It also didn't hurt that I started a new job in January 2008 and have a lot of free time at work as a result.

So tell me folks - we are all here for a reason, what is yours?

Also, I was just sent this picture from the meet & greet @ the Brit. I don't know what kinda f'ed up lense the photographer was using, but there's only two recognizable people in the photo, and one of us doesn't have any Cy Youngs on the mantle.

I'm the tall guy on the left, not the short guy on the right. And no, I didn't take this

picture and I don't know why it stuck my damn tag on it. Apologies. I was actually

mid conversation w/ tim at this point about the ever important topic of if he could

borrow my pen or not.

I got sick and tired of waiting for Boof.

I don’t remember how I first heard of (at the time) Waiting for Boof – probably a link from alt.sports.baseball.sf-giants back in the day. I used to check it occasionally, but wasn’t a religious reader or anything. I started following McCovey Chronicles more closely when I discovered RSS. I read Grant’s posts through RSS, but rarely checked the comments and was barely aware diaries/fanposts existed.

I first registered in 2006 when Grant did a post about terrible ads KNBR runs during games – I simply HAD to let the world know my opinion of the Tap Plastic jingle and that boring guy talking about screwcap wine. I then proceeded to not comment a single time for a year and a half.

I first started peeking into gameday threads in the second half of last year – I also moved back to the Bay Area around the same time. I suppose being back made me want to connect to other Giants fans.

Then, at the beginning of 2008, I was looking for a fantasy league, and thought MCC would be a good place to find one. But, as I said, I was barely aware of fanposts, so I tried emailing Grant to see if he thought there would be interest. He patiently explained to me that I could probably find plenty of people with a fanpost, so I did. I started reading more and more stuff, more and more comments….and then the season started and I got completely and hopelessly sucked into the gameday threads, and McCovey Chronicles became about my favorite place on the web.

I’ve been planning on starting up a McCoven fantasy league again this year. Y’all come join and get beaten by me (again).

Auto-draft or not? I’ll join, but I really don’t have the time to do a real-time draft.

by xanthan on Feb 12, 2009 6:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

We did a real-time draft last year, and I always like that. If you can’t be there, though, the system auto-drafts for you.

I’m interested, I could maybe do a real-time if it’s on a Saturday/Sunday.

by xanthan on Feb 12, 2009 7:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d do it if it’ll auto-draft for me. I’m too lazy busy to put the actual effort into a real-time draft.

I’ve always used Yahoo in the past, but I don’t have any particular attachment to it except for familiarity with the system. What’s ESPN’s system like? And isn’t their fantasy system for-pay?

ESPN’s system is a lot more involved. It has free stat tracking and some features that Yahoo doesn’t… but I prefer Yahoo.

Ah, sounds best to stick with Yahoo, then.

Hopefully we’ll get a bigger league this year – in a gameday thread towards the end of last season, I mentioned something about it, and like 7 or 8 people who hadn’t been in last years league expressed interest.

I was kinda out of baseball for a few years while I was in college — I still really liked the game, but I didn’t follow the Giants that strongly — so I wasn’t around during WFB. I really can’t remember how I found McC, or why I joined, but I think it was pretty soon after the site came to SBN. I think probably the first couple of Giants blogs I read was this site and OGC’s, since he’s been around for a bit, too.

But mostly I came for the penis jokes.

I was kicking around gamefaqs

on the sports boards and someone linked to Lookout Landing (it was the day Felix Hernandez took Johan deep last year). The entire 4 or 5 gameday threads were hilarous. I went back to the site the next day and noticed the sister sites at the bottom and then McCovey Chronicles and then I clicked it and then I lurked for a while and then I registered and now I kinda lurkpost.

I got lucky since it turned out that the owner of this site was incredibly funny and mildly intelligent (j/k). After just reading for a while I finally decided I had two cents to contribute.

TK and I were going to a game a few years ago, 2006 I think. I remember it was a Cardinals game. She told me about this blog called McCovey Chronicles and how she was going to meet up with some dudes from the blog. Deadteddy8 (as he was known then), Grant, Goofus, GiantJim (is he still around?) and someone else was there. After the game we went to the Hi Dive on the Embarcadero. I poked around on the blog for a few days after that game and liked what I saw. I joined the site after one of Grant’s especially funny posts, where I ripped off one of his phrases for my username.

Needed more Giants discussions in my life. While away at college I was starved for the Giants, while having to listen to conversations about the Angels. I somehow stumbled up this site, read a post by someone, disagreed, and tried to send a response, but the 1-day waiting period killed that. Regardless, I am new here and really enjoy the site in general. I never really followed the minors until I arrived here. Looking back, I wish I would have chose a different name…

Boring story time

Left home for college in 2000, found myself in the middle of Dodgers (and later, bandwagon Angels) territory for a couple of years. Lurking around message boards was a way to stay in touch with the Giants world. Never got around to joining any sites, because they were either a chaotic mess (sfgiants.com) or had the feeling of a private community.

Fast forward a few years, back home, stumbled upon WFB/MCC sometime around the SBN switch and found the combination of commentary and humor to my liking. Sometime in the middle of 2007, I was finally compelled to register and post and have pretty much hung around ever since.

I must have found it somehow last offseason in looking for Giants rumors…

I must admit, when this site went to SBN it took me several months to cope, and I didn’t start reading again for months. Maybe this was because there was a poll on the old site where I voted for things to stay the same and they didn’t, I was disgruntled but now like the site more.

I had changed jobs in 2005 (retired from one and started another with a Tribal Government) and my new job put me in an office. The first year I was all excited making changes and trying to learn the job, so I was busy. But then it started to slow down.

I had never really had a straight office job before. Most of my life was in Sales, Sales Training and IT. So I had all this time on my hands, and being a Giants fan, I started looking for something to do when I ran out of work.

I found a few sites that were not very good at all, but I also found El Lefty Malo.

I hung around there for a while, but did not post much, and it wasn’t really my style. One day he had a post that linked to one of Grants post’s on McC. Turned out that I liked the interaction here better, and I freakin loved the Gameday threads.

Now my job has come full circle. I had an two Assistant ‘s and with the economy tanking, there is only me in my office and I’m running around like a chicken with my head cut off :-)

I was a regular reader of GSWB (what GSoM was before they moved to SBN in early 2007 if I remember…). Found this site by looking through the sister sites of SBN and I’ve been lurking here ever since as I never had time to post because of something called college. But now that that’s over, I’ll try to comment a bit more.

I think it was back in 2003 or so, my buddy Brian (a Padre fan) told me about a Giants blog called waitingforboof. I said, “Cool, what’s a blog?” (true story) Being such a blabbermouth, it’s hard to believe it was actually a little while after the “user comments” were added before I signed up and started “contributing”.

Grant’s been trying to get rid of me since, but I keep reminding him of those pictures and I pretty much get to do whatever I want.

I was so desparate for Giants news in the offseason....

I was reading Glenn Dickey’s site. He directly recommended the McCovey Chronicles as the best Giants blog out there. Now I don’t have to read his columns any more.

Love Grant. Love how fast information comes in from all the readers.

China did it to me

When I first got out of college, I started getting back into baseball, probably as a means of giving me something to think about other than “Where the F am I going to get a job?!”. But I didn’t really feel the need to read lots of baseball websites until I was in China, which is very definition of a baseball desert. I think I started reading stuff like Baseball Analysts and the Hardball Times then on to Only Baseball Matters then El Lefty Malo and finally here.

I have no clue when I migrated over here. I started out my Giants fandom on the official boards, then moved to another board when the fail of the official board became too much to take. Then the other board started failing it up, so I moved over here and I’ve been here ever since. :’)

I wish I could remember exactly when I made the switch though. I’m sure I could go find my first ever comment, but I probably lurked for months before I ever made an account.

sometime in preseason 2006 I believe

My brother turned me on to the site. He used to comment very occasionally, but I don’t think he has since the day 26 months and 4 days ago when his son was born.

I can’t remember exactly when I started reading but I remember that this happened early on in my McCC career, along with the t-shirts. I was in grad school at the time and living in seattle, so it spent a lot of time watching games on mlb.tv and doing the gameday thread at the same time.

Your point was that Rowand + Lewis > Bonds + Roberts, not that crazy. But we got into a pretty bitter argument about your use of RBI + R – HR to measure offensive production. Zenbitz provided snark, I provided STATS and some RAGE, and Evan was the voice of reason.

Started posting on the mlb board looking for playoff tix in 2002. Work & real life caught up to me in 2004, but by 2005 I had time to post again. But had to migrate to another board because MLB site was craptacular by then. Other board got a little * so I moved over here after hearing good things from other Giant fans/posters.

I’m here to keep up with the Giant fan base as I haven’t lived in the bay area since my pre-teens (I’m 30 years old now). Everybody’s insight & analysis is much appreciated.

I don’t think I post anything substantial since moving over here because 1) yall cover all the good points 2) takes a lot of time just reading all the good points 3) work is catching up to me again 4) when I do have time, by the time I get two paragraphs into something really mind-blowing (oh yeah, mind-blowing!) I end up finding a counter-argument against everything I just wrote so I delete it. So I just come up with something like the comment below.

My comment:

Lord am I sick of that jingle and its crappy generic reggae-ish beat.

I’ve also grown quite tired of hearing about the benefits of screw cap wine. Honestly, I don’t give a crap. Also, if the wine is hard to find in stores, as the ad says, why are you advertising it constantly? Perhaps you should put the money from your advertising budget into distribution. Feh, I say.

Oh, and the beer commercials featuring one of the KNBR hosts whose name escapes me, about how whichever beer it’s about is a real man’s beer, not a wussie’s beer. Especially since, in one version, one of the wussie qualities listed was the basket catch. Um…it’s a GIANTS GAME. The basket catch was the trademark of WILLIE MAYS. Dude."

That’s the kind of in-depth analysis about weird, pointless crap the McCoven have come to expect from me! I’m just sorry there were no references to Brad Wellman or Kim Batiste.

I found this website while skydiving. Over Iraq. With bikini-clad babes. Through a hail of gunfire. While drinking margaritas. I looked down, and there was McC. True story.

I stayed because someone had the audacity to proclaim that Lowry is overrated due to his win total (14), and that wins are no longer a good indicator of how good a pitcher truly is. I fought that battle, proclaiming the greatness of Lowry, because he IS a winner. Sure, I lost that battle, but I’d like to think I won… Some other battle.

As I stuck around, I learned things like win totals really DO help overrate a pitcher. And after occasional postings on sfgate.com, I found I really enjoyed the civility of this board. Now I stick around the site because I like to contribute stupid comments that can be ignored by the public at large, or make smart-ass remarks that get misinterpreted.

You all are welcome for my contributions.

I can’t remember how I found the site originally. What I can say I usually read and lurk at sites and did so here for years before posting. Why I started lowering the property values posting here I can tell you. I was very dissatisfied with both what the front office was doing and a lot of fans that just wanted to vent but not talk ball between ventings. This site also allowed the SABR fans and the traditionalist to co-habitat in a large, happy and mostly dysfunctional family way so it feels like home. The Mod’s have been waiting for me to shut up and stop torturing the accept English grammar and spellings ever since.

I started reading WFB in 2002 or 2003. I think I stumbled across WFB from Baseball Think Factory or Primer, but can’t recall exactly. I immediately saw something different than other baseball writing. The combination of writing skill, baseball and irreverent humor remains unique. I was an instant fan and kept reading WFB and then made the switch to McC.

Over time, this site has attracted like minded posters/commenters who help make it the hilariously special place it is. Oh, and we talk about the Giants here.

Speaking of SBNation blogs

I just noticed that there’s a wikipedia article on Athletics Nation but not on McCovey Chronicles. WHAT A GRAVE INJUSTICE.

I joined via Kos, too.

I was just going to post this, but wanted to scan to see if there was anyone else in the same boat.

I honestly have no memory how I found this site, but came across it a few weeks after it launched in 2005, and instantly loved the sense of humor of Grant and the (then small number of) commenters. My first post was about how weird it was that there was rain in San Diego during the Pads-Giants game. It was the first of thousands of posts, 98% of which are weak jokes or poorly informed observations about baseball stats and strategy.

Grant's mom turned me on to it. (Hmmm, must be a better way to word that.)

In mid-2006, I was visiting a friend sitting in View Reserve 312 or 313 or so, and in front of her was a very nice woman wearing a t-shirt with a lot of writing on the back. My friend suggested I read it, so the nice woman leaned forward so I could see it all. It concerned an angel getting its wings ripped off when a dodger scores, and ending with the famous “It’s science.” She told me her deadbeat son who worries her endlessly wrote it and told me the name of the blog, and I joined up that night. My 4th year here… “that is in no way depressing.”

Grant needs to bring back those t-shirts. I never did get around to getting one.

Exile in NJ

Read Waiting for Boof for a while — signed up and first posted after AA team moved to Norwich, making me feel marginally less out of it. When did El Lefty Malo start? i can’t recall which I was following first.

I think...

I found out about MCC through a Yahoo! thing that I put on my home page. It was for the Giants and McCovey Chronicles kept coming up so i checked it out. I guess I liked it enough to stay on.

'Twas Niners Nation

I was desperately looking for all the niners-related pre-draft stuff I could find, and Fooch linked to this place on the front page. He was talking about how the forthcoming SBN make-over would make NN look like McC.

So I checked out McC, found there were actual active gameday threads, and have loved it ever since. It makes watching a Giants game even more fun than it already is.

John Perricone

I can’t remember how I found onlybaseballmatters, but it was in ’05 sometime (I think) and then months later I found Lefty and thence on to here. I am almost sure I started out searching for something about Lowry and Tomko. In quotes.

Still-proud, adoptive mama of Notgardo Alfonzo, who's back from the 50-game purgatory. He promises never to do it again. I couldn't get him to promise to hit, though. We're working on that with bribes of M&Ms, kind of like potty training.

I think I have mentioned before that I am new to the game. Was introduced to it after the cancelled WS. Fell in love with it and pretty quickly sucked up all my friends’ knowledge for the game. I was fiending for more, followed some link “the heavily trafficed McCovey Chronicles”… Lurked for a few months in 06. Still only have less than 200 comments. There was a game day thread where I mentioned being female and all hell broke lose. Pretty funny for me actually.

I beg to differ. Every SP episode makes Mrs. Goofus and me LOL at least once. Goofus Jr is now watching it as well, so he’s being completely corrupted.

I’m pretty convinced that they’re the Jonathan Swift of our times. The gross-out gags are fine, but when they hit the mark with their satire, it’s amazingly smart and funny.

Personally I prefer the newer to the older. They are less like Family Guy, and have more jokes that follow the story line. Plus they have developed a line of very funny sub-characters. IMO

I don’t really follow SP anymore. The old ones were definitely better IMO. I say seasons 3 to 6 were the best, and 7 and 8 is where the show started declining, though they still had a few great episodes (Good Times with Weapons, All About the Mormons).

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
