Bobby Abreu signs for 1 yr/$5mm
Really? I mean, I know we have like 40 outfielders...but dude would instantly be the best hitter in our lineup. For 5mm. I suppose age is a concern...and maybe his defense is atrocious...but, 5 million for some much needed pop in the lineup is sort of worth it.

nah...
you have to look at him as an all around player— I’m willing to bet that anything we might gain by having his bat in the lineup we’d just give right back with his glove in the OF. I’m much more tempted by wondering if Dunn would’ve signed with us for $25 mil over 2 years to play 1b, which might have been worth it, IMO.
Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

yeah like i said
I don’t know that his defense would give it all back. I have OPS+ in my eyes, can’t see the negatives.

Not even as a 1B?
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
Forgot to add my last bit, even if he did play first and we call him a -5 run defender at the position, his value really isn’t going to change much from playing the OF.
-12.5 runs position (1B) – 5 runs defense = -17.5 runs total adjustment
-7.5 runs position (LF) – 11 runs defense = -18.5 runs total adjustment
I remember discussing this with you, I think it was regarding Crede – what matters is not the league replacement level, but our replacement level. Abreu’s replacements in LF are Lewis and Schierholtz. His replacements at 1B are Ishikawa and Phelps.

I think the last I checked I had Ishikawa worth a little over +1 win as a first baseman if he got 70% playing time (or about 490 PAs). Abreu — if he would agree to play first in this thought exercise — would be worth about +1.5 wins in the same amount of playing time.
So, overall, you’re looking at about a half-win to a full-win depending on playing time between the two.
Could be worth the money. Depends on how close to contention you think we are.

abreu
i’m not a huge abreu fan, but jesus…. it sure would be nice to have a #3 hitter. ( or 4, or 5)
we’re going to have a nice pitching staff, with a line up of #2 and #6 & #7 hitters.
