Hard to believe the Giants weren’t that interested in a slugging first baseman.
No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

if the rumors that he had no interest in playing first were true, I guess there’s not much they could do about that.

We should have made him a third baseman.

That would be hilarious and worth $10 million a year.

fatties can't play third
I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.

wasn’t it that Burrell didn’t want to play first, and Dunn is so bad at first that they didn’t want him?

Decent deal for Nats. Deal length is fine and he’s getting paid like a +2 win player, which is basically what he is.
by xanthan on Feb 11, 2009 12:31 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
plus, he gives them a semi-star to market
on that team, that’s got to count for something. Cristian Guzman sure isn’t going to put butts in the seats.

I think Ryan Zimmerman is a marketable star for that team.

Back at the beginning of the offseason, I read that Dunn was looking for a nine-figure deal.
Oops.

Didn’t the Angels sign Abreu as well? The Manny, Borass and Special Agent Ned Circus should get very entertaining now.

Man, all of a sudden, if the Dodgers don’t sign Manny, their best remaining outfield option is… Garret Anderson.

Wouldn’t that be a cryin’ shame. Maybe they could trade for Ibanez or Sarge Jr.

Back in 1996/1997, when Bonds demanded a trade, I remember one of the deals being discussed involved Anderson as a centerpiece. I also remember a trade with the Mets for Alex Ochoa and others was discussed. So, so glad that didn’t happen.

I think this is a sign that Manny is signing with the Dodgers. Dunn was waiting on the Dodgers, and I don’t think he would have signed with the Nationals unless his agent was informed that the Dodgers were no longer interested.

I wish baseball would integrate the Segway into game-time action. Like, using it for bullpen relievers (they could ride in from the OF) or for managers during pitching changes. It would be awesome.

That would be amazing. They also need to integrate the “Descending from the ceiling and/or a helicopter” thing when they announce the starting lineups. Like that video of Shinjo in Japan. You know what I mean.

Can’t help but be a little dissapointed that we show more interest in Burell/Dunn for 1B, especially given that it’s an obvious need & the market has been pretty reasonable. Oh well, not annoyed about it, but it would have been nice.

This signing gives Boras leverage
Dodgers backup plan was Adam Dunn. Now Scott Boras could use this signing to get what he wants for Manny. Dodgers don’t have much in the OF.

Not that much. The situation is essentially the same. LA can go much higher than anyone else wants to, and do you really think manny will turn down 1/25 for 1/17 or 2/32 or so that other teams might offer?

Nick the Stick?
I know he’s been healthy for, like, 3 hours over the past 7 years, but don’t the Nats have an interest in moving Nick Johnson now?
All I’m sayin’ is: the dude can hit.
Anyone want a piece of that? Seriously, no? I’ve always had a slight mancrush on him.

I agree. I always want him for the last pick in fantasy. That works out alright for a few weeks. He’s always injured sure but now’s the perfect time to buy low. I want.

Had this deal been w/ us
I would have been happy. I’m a little disappointed, but I will give the FO the benefit of the doubt on this one.
I think that means our roster is set, folks.

This does however add an interesting wrinkle to the Manny situation
It basically sends the message that the Dodgers have no other options. If they don’t get Manny now their OF is going to be in trouble.
This would be a perfect time for Sabean to jump in w/ a 2/50 or 3/60 deal and drive the price up for the dodgers.
Either that, or steal Manny away with his + 4 wins, causing a likely delta shift of 6 wins between us and them
