The School Thread Part At Least 27

Well, perhaps not 27, but we've had quite a few of these.  In fact I think I've started quite a few of these.  Anyway, the Spring Semester is probably either starting soon or started for most people.  Where are you going?  Why do I ask this every semester?  What are you taking?

I'm going to West Valley again this year, after moving back home.  I'm basically taking a few classes to see if I'm interested in the topic, as I'm still trying to work out my life's purpose.

Afro-Latin Percussion (ok, perhaps this is just a fun class)

Currently fighting with San Jose State University

I was due to start my “junior” year at SJSU this fall. Now, despite me doing everything was asked of me, I might not be admitted due to the massive state budget crisis. They’re talking about cutting admissions. I had to do battle with both them and my community college’s admissions office just to get my transcripts in on time. I filled out the paperwork for my general education certification and transcripts to be sent to SJSU in OCTOBER and they still did not get to SJSU by their deadline. I missed a full day of work to hand in my transcripts in person at the SJSU admissions office and got a speeding ticket on 680 the same day. And if I do get in, there’s no guarantee I’ll have access to loans because the state might issue IOUs in place of student loan checks.

So it’s safe to say that school and I aren’t getting along right now.

I had a few ideas for what I wanted to do this spring semester. I finished my GE credits for CSU last semester. I like school and thought about taking classes anyway, just for my own benefit. I thought about taking Spanish, or yoga, or guitar. Then my grandmother died at the beginning of the month and the fallout from that forced me to look at what needs to be done immediately with her stuff and my own life. So I was forced to take a semester off just to get myself in order.

I have to move out at the end of February and thank god I found a place. Next step is finding a steady job. In between all that I’ll still be fighting tooth and nail with San Jose State. I’m telling you right now, if I don’t get in for fall semester, it will not be pretty. I have stellar grades and I met all my deadlines and requirements. Something will go up in flames.

Ouch Baron…I feel for ya. I know you’ve had your eyes on SJSU for a while now. Hope things work out for youI

Also know that there’s no shame in taking some time off to sort out your personal issues. Hell, even I took some time off in the middle of my college days, was soooooo worth it though as the things that needed to get sorted did, and I didn’t feel the strain when everyone else was stressing over things for graduation, etc.

I'm missing Omar and all his "Dreamy-ness".

Baron, if you don’t get in for fall semester, something shouldn’t go up in flames, someone should go up in flames.

Maybe just try and add a class like yoga or guitar for relaxation, that’s basically why I’m taking my percussion class. I’ve tried to take a “relaxation” course every semester so I have something to fall back on when everything comes down in the world.

The bureaucratic nonsense is really really ridiculous. I hope that it works out for you Baron. I’m not exactly in the same situation but I know how you feel. I’m in my last semester and when I applied for graduation I came up one unit short. Apparently, everyone in my major and my year came up one unit short because they changed the class catalog after we started and the computers are all using the new catalog. If this doesn’t get fixed, can I borrow a light?

It's not just SJSU...

Mr. Merope and I have both gone rounds with Sac State trying to get admitted as “unclassified graduate students” they kept sticking us into the slot for “people getting a 2nd bachelor’s degree” not the same thing at all. Two different departmental offices telling us that there really was such a thing as unclassified grad student, and admissions and records saying “no there’s not”

we both gave up

I’m not currently in school, but I’m planning on applying to PhD programs at the end of the year. However, I’m not willing to move or go further into debt for them, so we’ll see if it works out. The only two places I can really consider are Berkeley and maybe Stanford, and they’re both tough programs to get into.

I don’t always love school when I’m in it, but I do miss it when I’m not. I like being a student – mainly I like having my mind stretched and challenged and being around people who are doing the same – and I’m good at it. That last statement would likely amaze some of my high school teachers, as I may become one of the few people around who earns a PhD but didn’t graduate from high school (I ended up getting a GED). I was a shitty high school student, but a very good student since then – my education benefited greatly from having more control over what I’m studying and how I’m studying it. And from just having more control over my life in general.

My educational history, by the way:

- Liberal Arts BA from Eugene Lang College/The New School, 2003, concentration in creative writing
- MA in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago, 2007, also a concentration in creative writing

In terms of writing, I’m interested in both fiction and creative nonfiction (personal essays/memoir). In terms of literature, my main interest is in African-American Literature. More broadly I’m interested in issues of race in America. One of my favorite papers I ever wrote in grad school was a reinterpretation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the novel, not the movie or its remakes) as a narrative of white flight – it’s more commonly seen as being about suburban alienation or the threat of Communism. I also wrote about, for example, the role of invisibility as a form of agency in Ellison’s Invisible Man, and the role of race in Robinson Crusoe, which I think is a terribly tedious and ridiculous novel, but it’s really interesting to pull apart how it reflects its society’s attitudes towards race and class. And I did some research in whiteness studies, which is an interesting field that almost nobody outside of academic circles even knows exists.

I could go on about this stuff for much longer. You see, I really do miss being a student.

I think that in most hard science PhD candidates will be able to find a job as an indentured servant a TA and/or research assistant, which basically pays for your degree (and that’s about it.) Of course, if you’re too good, they won’t let you leave as the exploitation becomes too profitable.

I haven’t, I think O’Har mostly teaches the Freshman writing course these days, which I skipped and Anderson does Romantics, it looks like?, which really isn’t my area of interest. They both appear to be adjunct faculty now as well. When did you graduate?

stat

statistics—sorry that it seems too common sense. Maybe it’s being taught at a low level to math phobic people.
I get in these discussions a lot, and still can’t figure how to solve the problem when to teach/learn it. After you have worked some, or been around resarch, many folks say “I wish I knew statistics better”.
But while your mind is young and good with math, most folks don’t see the point.
I did NOT take any stat at college level—did a quick self study in HS cz my math teacher thought I would like it (I did not.) Then was in a grad program for public policy where research methods were taught well, stat too.

Georgetown grad student

I’m in my second year of a PhD in neuroscience and taking my last semester of classes before going full-time into thesis research. Classes were one of the things I was looking forward to when I decided to go back to school for a PhD, but now I can’t wait to be done with them… it’s tough deciding how much time to devote to them when there’s so much other (more important) crap to do. But at the same time, I don’t like half-assing things. The classes I’ve got are:

-Synaptic Transmission
-Science Policy and Advocacy
-Applied Statistics
-Pattern Recognition

Right now I’m putting off doing homework for applied stats.

Second-year med student

I’m at Creighton, in beautiful Omaha, Nebrasky (umm, cool?). We have a systems-based curriculum, so I’ve already had a final this semester (Renal). Currently taking Endocrine-Reproductive and still have Musculo-Skeletal-Integument, Gastro-Intestinal and Behavioral Medicine 3. Then, in June, I get to take the first Board exam. This means that – basically around Opening Day – my life will turn into a sad library-bound existence and this blog will be the only fun I’m allowed until I’m done with Boards. Hopefully I’ll do well enough on Boards that I can apply to radiology residencies.
