Giants Rule 5 Draft Preview
With the Rule 5 Draft being held tomorrow, I thought it would be a good idea to post a preview of what I would like the Giants to do in that draft. Last year we drafted Luis Perdomo but he got DFA'd and the Padres scooped him up. The Rule 5 Draft also provided us Eugenio Velez. So without further ado I will give 40 names that are being discussed on the internet and 5 guys I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants take.
40 Guys
Craig Baker-RHP-Col
Aaron Breit-RHP-SD
Aruimedes Caminero-RHP-Fla
Scott Campbell-2B-Tor
Bobby Cassevah-RHP
Yeliar Castro-RHP-Atl
Robinson Chirnos-C/Util-CHC
Koby Clemens-C-Hou
Collin Curtis-OF-NYY
Blake Davis-SS-Bal
Brian Dinkleman-2B/OF-Min
Danny Dorn-OF-Cin
Grant Duff-RHP-NYY
Edgar Garcia-RP-Phi
Henry Garcia-2B-Phi
Brennar Garr-RHP-Tex
Will Inman-RHP-SD
Ben Jukich-LHP-Cin
George Kontos-RHP-NYY
Zach Kroenke-LHP-NYY
Chuck Lofgren-LHP-Cle
Matt McBride-OF/C-Cle
Mike McBryde-CF-SF
Tommy Mendoza-RHP-LAA
Ryan Mount-2B-LAA
Edgar Osuna-LHP-Atl
Carlos Peguero-1B-Sea
Paul Phillips-RHP-TB
Yohan Pino-RHP-Cle
John Raynor-OF-Fla
Jason Rice-RP-Bos
Aneury Rodriguez-RHP-TB
Josh Rodriguez-INF-Cle
Steve Singleton-2B-Min
Ben Snyder-LHP-SF
Chad Tracy-1B/OF-Tex
Neil Wagner-RHP-Cle
Sean Watson-RHP-Cle
Kevin Whelan-RHP-NYY
Steven Wright-RHP-Cle
Guys I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants take (In order of preference)
1-Zach Kroenke-LHRP-NYY
The Giants could use a lefty MR
to keep Runzler in AAA (for arb
reasons and keep him at the back
of the bullpen). Kroenke could
also offset the loss of Justin Miller
and Bob Howry.
2-Yohan Pino-RHRP-Cle
Probably the most ML ready of
the Rule V draft prospects, he
doesn't light up radar guns but
he has a great K rate and has
started. He could be this year's
Justin Miller (hopefully without
the inability to pitch at Coors field)
3-Matt McBride-C/1B/OF-Cle
McBride should only be taken if
the Giants need a back up catcher
and signing a FA seems unlikely
McBride can't catch everyday
but I think he can still catch some
of the time and offers some
upside with the bat.
4-Ben Jukich-LHRP-Cle
Basically the same reasons
as Kroenke, but Jukich isn't as
highly regarded. He has a fringe
fastball but a very good breaking
ball.
5-Mike McBryde-OF-SF
No one else excites me, so why
risk losing a guy who profiles as
a very good 4th OF.

But....
Zach Kroenke would be wasted in middle relief! He won the Cy Young award last year, likely because he had so many WINZ.
just a sambple of carbon-based wastage
I thought that said Francisco Peguero
I freaked out for a second.

Also, Eugenio was the minor league rule 5 draft, which isn’t quite the same thing.

Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
FYI
The Yankees are trying to trade the #1 pick. If they don’t they are most likely to pick .Aruimedes Caminero a pitcher for the Marlins, Or take Kroenke, so they can keep him in their system.
Why would they select Kroenke? They could of protected him.

It’s a way to protect him without using the 40-man roster spot.
Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?
But doesn’t he have to be place on the 25 after being selected? And then DFA’d?

True. I should clarify. You’re technically correct – selecting him will take up a 40-man roster spot, but they can then drop him off of the roster and return him to his team of origin (themselves). When they do that, he’ll have to pass through waivers, but if you wait a while, many/most teams will have filled their needs throughout the offseason, so there’s less of a risk of losing him. At least, that’s the logic as it’s been explained to me.

Baker, Mcbride
I can’t speak to a lot of the names on this list. But I saw these 2 guys in Fall League and liked each of them.
Baker seems to be a solid bullpen arm, and did well in the hitter friendly CAL league last year.
McBride puts the ball in play, which I like. Had a great fall, and if he is available, I hope the Giants chime in on him.
The only position I saw him at in the AFL was catcher.
check out his line though in 22 games
.378, 28H, 4 2B, 2 3B, 4HR, 18RBI, 19BB, 9SO
I’d like him better than Whiteside, but I’d put him in the OF, because of the catching situation.
Colin Curtis
He was on my sister’s t-ball team coached by my dad around 1990. He hit homers every time he came up. My dad still has his baseball card and autograph from when Colin was 5 or 6! Wonder if it’s worth anything now?! ;-)

He projects as a 4th OF
Not a lot of power but should play in the majors. I think it said he beat cancer.

I wonder what happened to Chuck Lofgren. He was awesome in high school: 96mph fastball, fluttering breaking-ball, legit power-hitter. He hit one into the parking garage at Buck Shaw to win the WCAL championship for Serra. Of course, he also went to Serra, so that’s a strike against.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
I was a senior and faced him as a freshman, and he was pretty darn good.

Giants took RHP Steve Johnson from Baltimore
Went to Baltimore from the Dodgers in the Sherrill trade this year. Don’t know a huge amount about him but he looks intriguing. Doubt he’ll end up lasting on the roster though.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Ben Synder was selected by the Rangers
He was actually selected by the Orioles but will go to Texas as part of the Millwood trade. Think he’s an interesting candidate for the bullpen but good luck to him in that ballpark. Would imagine we’ll get him back at some point.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Oh no how did we let that happen! On a serious note i don’t think we’ll be cursing that one in years to come.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Giants take Jake Stevens from Orioles (again) in the minor league phase
Looks like he’s just organizational filler (which most players are in the minor league phase)
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Giants also lost Brian Horwitz to the Indians
Presumably we went in the minor league phase and so will be gone for good.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
I don’t think anyone knows. I guess because they’ve not had an overwhelming need to take him off (although other, better players have been) but probably more likely because they still hold out some hope for him.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Giants FO love for Bocock
Cools my hopes for other “Scout” favorites like Adrianza.
co-dad w/AfDC of
Ishikawa, the Topps Rookie All Star Team's First baseman. Does he get a chance in 2010?
40 man roster
Bocock might keep his spot. You gotta figure that Garko gets dropped next as the non-tender deadline approaches and they have decided to try and sign a free agent first baseman. Whiteside will get dropped when they sign a starting catcher. They are trying to trade Lewis and Frandsen so those spots might open up if they sign a utility guy or an outfielder.
Bocock’s ceiling is unlimited. Apparently. Just gotta be more patient.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

Rule 5 Thoughts
I like the Johnson pick. I assume he’ll battle with Martinez, Pucteas, MadBum, Random FA Signing (Correia?) to be the #5 starter. If we keep him on the 25 man all year I’ll be pleasantly surprised. Happy to see McBryde protected and not heart broken to lose Snyder and Burgos.
