Garko playing some catcher.

Just my own kooky idea. Giants are having a tough time finding a temporary solution at catcher. Garko provides a good bat for the position, but the defense would be the biggest question. But hey, he played it in college! Yay or nay?

I have never heard of this idea before.

by taliesin on Dec 9, 2009 5:24 PM PST reply actions

Well I haven't.

Maybe I missed something.

But I don’t think it’s that bad really.

He played a fair amount of catcher in 2005.
Maybe he moved to 1B because he sucked at catching? If that’s the case, I’d argue that it’s only temporary.

I mean shit.. Sabean traded for him, they might as well use him.

Trust me

There were a lot of things I did in college that I really shouldn’t do professionally.

No

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Hey! While this whole WalrusMan likes kids thing has been going on, what member of this site has stuck by your side? Who here – on more than one occasion – said that you could have Brooke Burnes like that?

And this is how you repay me? For shame.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

I think that Nate Schierholtz kid could play 3B at the Major League level.

oh for sure

I’m fairly positive Garko would be a substantial defensive upgrade over Posey, who’s clearly not ready to catch 100 games at the major league level.

Well actually, maybe he is ready if like, there’s not a better option.

A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.

"Defensive upgrade over Posey"

No one said that.

If Posey were to be the opening day starter, then I wouldn’t even suggest moving Garko to catcher.

I personally feel he’s ready, or just about ready to start playing for the Giants.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Dec 9, 2009 10:45 PM PST up reply actions

I SAID IT!! Posey won’t be ready to catch until he catches 100 games at the major league level, until then he shouldn’t play in the bigs

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

I could see trying to use him as a 3rd string C. Maybe 1 to 2 dozen appearances in a season max. Anything more than that is just begging for trouble.

Old news

He moved to 1B because Cleveland already had a pretty good catcher in Victor Martinez.
Also won the Johnny Bench award while at Stanford as the best college catcher, same award Posey won a couple of years ago.

"If we had signed Guerrero or Sheffield, we would have been without Brower, Eyre, Herges, Hermanson,Tomko,Pierzynski, Feliz, Snow,Hammonds, Mohr and Tucker–obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint"--B Sabean

Seriously, I think he should catch. He’ll be bad at it, but he’ll make up for it with his bat.

Whiteside/Garko for a couple of months, then bring up Posey.

by Evan on Dec 9, 2009 8:09 PM PST reply actions

See.. That's where I stand.

He has a bit more value at catcher than at 1st base, even if he were horrible with the glove at catcher (which I honestly doubt is true).

And it would only be for a couple of months before Posey comes up.

Garko is right in the Giants’ hands. They should use him.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Dec 9, 2009 10:43 PM PST up reply actions

even if he were horrible with the glove at catcher

I think he would be absolutely horrible with the glove. He hasn’t played C in years. He wasn’t a good defensive C prospect in the minors before he got moved off C. Our pitchers would have to either throw more fastballs or just accept all the past balls that are going to happen when they throwing their breaking stuff. I think he’d give back a lot of runs behind the plate. Also, he probably wouldn’t hit as well playing C as he would playing 1B.

The Yankees still let Jorge Posada catch and he’s terrible but he brings plenty of value with his bat.

Don’t see why Garko shouldn’t catch, especially ahead of a loser like Whiteside.

I think we need that picture.

88-74 - Giants Series Record: 28-18-5, 19-7 at home.

Adopted Giant: Daryl "Dealio" Maday - Not reassigned after all. Still a mediocre AA pitcher.
