Sabean and Co. misplayed the FA market for the 3rd straight year (since the post-BLB era), this time we lose a compensation pick which is slightly better than having a mediocre player committed to big bucks for many years but not by much since we traded two of our top 10 minor leaguers last year.

Sabeans try this:
Step 1 - Pick up the phone and actually talk to other people besides Lou Seal (such as agents, managers, gm's, grant) to see if teams are interested in certain positions/players
Step 2 - Whatever idea comes through your little head, reverse it
Step 3 - Subtract 1 yr - $5 million dollars from all outgoing contracts
Step 4 - Offer half of what you had originally planned on giving up in trades
Step 5 - Fire yourself

any other suggestions?

Isn’t that collusion? Anyways a agent wont be honest.

Disagree. He made the right call on Molina. Not worth the possibility that Molina would take the arb offer. Plus, no guarantee that the Mets would be interested if they had to give up the pick.

Aside from that, steps 3 through 5 are good suggestions.

THIS.

If Molina could pull 8.5 mil in arb not out of the question he could enter next offseason in virtually the same position he is now seeking a 2/12 kind of deal. 3/20 > 2/12. I think he would have take arb, and his presence would have been infuriating to the McCoven, and I believe would have become a legitimate distraction in the clubhouse. Just look at some of the stupid things Molina said after Posey got called up. It would have been horrible.

Yeah

Just start with Step 5. Problem solved.

The fact that he wasn’t offered arb probably played a big role in the fact he got a 2 yr offer from the Mets. Look at the situation the Braves are in with Rafael Soriano. He surprisingly accepted arbitration after they had already signed Wagner and Saito. Now they are on the hook for around $8 million unless they can find someone to take him for nothing. This situation could have easily played out with the Molina situation.

Not sure what to do about my screen name at this point...

i agree, i would rather have him gone than take the risk. i mean worst case scenario, that is. if he was willing to take arb and realize that he would be losing starts to posey, and that he could not expect to be the cleanup hitter anymore, then it wouldnt have been so bad.
but its moot
he gone

If Sabean doesn't come back from that meeting with a WS ring, I'll be PISSED

Given that the offseason has just begun, its quite ridiculous to say it’s already been misplayed. Unless you expected, say, Granderson. Which I doubt anyone seriouly did.

Yawn

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.
