What's the downside to starting the season with Posey?

I mean, aside from the fact that no one thinks he’s ready blah blah blah.

There isn't a downside

People have talked themselves into believing that “he isn’t ready” but it really isn’t the case.

Posey will put up better numbers than any of the broken down hackers that the Giants are looking at.

WHY IS BOCOCK?!

by Lars The Wanderer on Dec 8, 2009 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

He's a perfect #3 in the lineup

If we didn’t get anyone else, I could be okay with this lineup:

Velez/Torres
Sanchez
Posey
Sandoval
Bowker
Rowand
Garko
Renteria

Of course, I could really embrace the lineup if Velez/Torres were replaced with Lewis. It’s not just the stupid that bugs me about our FO, it’s that they have a lot of ingredients to field a better team, and yet they are blind to it.

Erm, why would you have your second best hitter in the 7th spot in the lineup? It’s also premature to talk about Posey as a middle of the order hitter at this stage so if you just swapped those two you’d be better off.

I am a firm believer in putting the best players on the field. That means Posey over Olivo or any of the other crap they have been looking at the start. The Giants are close enough to being a playoff team to ditch the idea of roster gymnastics just to get another season of “cheap” out of what should be their starting catcher.

Also, the stupidity of wasting time trying to find a catcher when they already have one in-house just boggles the mind.

perhaps. I believe Super Two status is granted by averaging the service time of all arb eligible players. It’s really a best guess.

Besides, if Buster is who we think he is (thanks Dennis Greene!) than he’ll hit his way onto the team fairly quickly, just like Lincecum pitched his way onto the team in an expedited manner.

there is a threshold (117 days?) in order to be eligible.

"The BB's are out. The BB's are being arseholes to me." - Brian Wilson.

by hairball on Dec 8, 2009 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

It Would Take Closer To 3 Months

Buster already has 32 days of MLB service time. The Giants can most likely afford to give him another 90 or so in 2010 and still keep him non super 2 in 2013. This means they can not bring him up until the 1st of July or later if they want to be confident they are likely to avoid super 2.

by giantsrainman on Dec 8, 2009 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

The threshold is established anew each year. The player has to be in the top 17% (by service time) of the players who have at least two but less than three years of major league service. Generally speaking, it’s around 2 years, 130 days (this year was 139). So a team is usually safe starting a guy in the majors around Memorial Day if he has no previous service time. Since Posey does have 30 days, the Giants would have to keep him in AAA until the latter half of June, at least, to avoid making him a Super 2.

by jcb9 on Dec 8, 2009 11:36 AM PST up reply actions

Yes, but there also is a threshold you have at least X amount of service time. For example, if for some reason every 2+ year service time had 2 years +1 day service time exactly no one would be a super two.

say hey nation is the Ralph Nader of McC.-Xanthan

by say hey nation on Dec 8, 2009 11:38 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think so

Here’s the rule:

A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration. In addition, a player can be classified as a “Super Two” and be eligible for arbitration with less than three years of service. A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season.

The guy has to have 86 days in the immediately preceding season, but as long as he meets that threshold he’s eligible.

They would, if Posey spends the first 2 months in the minors then he’ll be a free agent after the 2016 season as opposed to the 2015 season. Whether that (or the money savings) are enough to keep him in the minors is a matter of debate but it is a clear downside.

Yeah it’s a long time off but it’ll eventually come and at that stage you’ll be pretty incovenicenced just as we are with having to dish out and extra $10M this year or just as we would be if Lincecum was due to hit free agency a year earlier.

Also, what are you really gaining from losing a year of Posey in his prime? You’re saving yourself a couple of Million dollars (which you could end up costing yourself more)! Wow! You’re also downgrading from Posey but given that he’s only had 100 AB above A-ball he’s not likely to hit all that well in the first couple of months. The projections have him being worth about 1.5 runs better than Zaun over the first couple of months.

If you’re talking about having to spend good money to replace him, or you’re talking about a prospect who is going to cause a huge dropoff then you’ve got an issue. If you’re having to spend $2M and lose 1.5 runs then i think there’s a very valid argument for keeping him down to help his development. And that’s why, as mentioned by others, lots of teams delay the service clocks of players.

Yeah, generally players don’t really change value a huge amount if you move them round the OF, what they gain (or lose) in offense they lose (or gain) in defense. Others have studied examples and for most cases there isn’t a lot of difference. Obviously that only applies to players who are deemed capable of playing those positions and it’d probably break down if you tried Adam Dunn in CF.

He’s not going to pull 20 million but he’s going to go from 400K to probably somewhere between 12 and 15 million.

no, but it’s not a bad idea for a plug number. This really is an unprecedented arbitration filing, and the MLBPA is going to push Timmy to break the bank.

that still doesn’t include the raises due Sanchez, Wilson, perhaps Garko, et al.

Plus I think Zito’s salary goes up this year, plus Cain, plus Rowand, etc.

how have we gone from being close to signing tex or CC last winter (after renteria) to not being able to make a move to add payroll this year?

Lincecum was expcted to jump to 10 million at that time
we added a second baseman, but that’s not CC money

I don’t know that we actually WERE close to signing either of them. Sabean certainly said we weren’t. Of course, he’s also a liar, so who knows.

No, this one was a “how dare those assholes raise expectations by saying I was going to sign Sabathia when that was never an option” rant. At least with Sabathia. I don’t remember him saying anything about Teixeira.

If we might’ve spent less in draft bonuses this year. Wheeler’s bonus was almost $3 million less than Posey’s.

Now that I check, Kouzmanoff had some value in 2009

Largely based on a probably-flukey UZR, though.

UZR/150, 2009: 10.7
UZR/150, career: 2.8
