Dioner Navarro?
Could this be an acceptable solution to our short term catching needs?

The 2009 Version Might Just Get Posey Up To The MLB Level And Starting Quicker
Navarro is more then acceptable defensively and it might be worth the short term offensive risk to let him start the season as the starter knowing that the plan would be that he would end the season as the backup.

Sounds good.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

The 2009 Version....
Not a good option with our elite staff.
He Was Above Average According To Available Defensive Stats In 2009
Therefore I really don’t see what your point is.

Just because someone becomes available (especially given that the other team doesn’t want him) doesn’t mean we should grab him. (1) His batting average stunk (.218), (2) He hasn’t been in the big leagues that long and has spent limited time in the National league… meaning his lack of knowledge of the hitters. (3) It has already been stated by the FO that they’re looking for an experienced catcher…Rod Barajas perhaps, but I wouldn’t be surprise they look in to acquiring Doumit of Pittsburgh.
This Doesn't Answer The Question Relative To "

1) Sure he had an awful 2009, but if he could post anything close to what he did at the plate in ‘08 he’d be a great addition. 2) He’s played in 490 games over 6 seasons. Sure he’s no Kendall, Pudge or Ausmus in terms of experience but I’m not sure I’d call him inexperienced. 3) I’d like to see Doumit here, but Navarro is much, much better defensively and since Doumit has appeared in fewer total games than Navarro and a lot fewer games as a catcher he doesn’t really fulfill your own requirement of “experienced.”
Thing A
He has plenty of grit, but he’s not quite enough of a gamer for my tastes.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

i still want doumit
not sure what the pirates are asking, but he is being shopped.
2 Years And $9.15M Remains On His Contract
This is way to much to commit to for someone who you hope will become the backup catcher sooner then later.
by giantsrainman on Dec 7, 2009 8:52 PM PST up reply actions
back-up catcher, back-up 1B, back-up sucky white guy. If all we had to do is take on the salary and give up a fringe prospect I’d do it. The Pirates have been so good recently I think it makes sense to try to get all their players…maybe.
I have finally accepted the fact that I will never win a McCoven award.
The Money Is Better Spent On Players You Plan to Start
It is wasted on a backup no matter how many positions that backup can play.

The money is best spent on players you plan to start play. If Doumit hits the way most are projecting he would be a guy that should be in our lineup someplace most days. Does it matter that he wouldn’t have one permanent position just so we can slap the “starter” title on him if he’s still getting regular at-bats? I don’t think it would be at all difficult to get him 15-20 plate appearances per week (1 game at catcher, 1 game at 1B, 2 games in a corner OF spot, pinch hit on off days) even before we have any injuries.
Thing A
The Outfield Starts You Suggest Are Highly Unlikely Due To His Questionable Defense
The Giants are looking to add another full time infielder. His bat really isn’t any better then Garko’s. The Giants are considering non tendering Ryan because he would cost too much for such a role. Why do you think they would or should pay even more for Doumit?
by giantsrainman on Dec 8, 2009 1:51 AM PST up reply actions
because, unlike Garko, they’d be willing to let him catch. We wouldn’t be acquiring him as our infield bat as much as we would as our immediate starting catcher. I don’t see why acquiring Doumit would in any way prohibit a Nick Johnson type acquisition. The difference between Doumit and Ausmus/Kendall/Olivo/other veteran catcher is that Doumit would allow them some flexibility if the team opts to make Posey the everyday catcher at some point this season. Obviously he’d also cost a prospect unlike the any of the various veteran free agent catchers, but he also gives the team another legitimate bat in the lineup on opening day. Doumit has a very limited sample size of OF defense but it doesn’t appear to be that bad to me. I’m not familiar with how difficult it is to play RF in Pittsburgh, but would it really be much easier than LF here? Do you really think he’d be a worse defensive leftfielder than Jermaine Dye? I’m not advocating Dye in any way, I’m just saying that if the team seems willing to take the defensive hit on Dye in LF (or 1B) because they think he can post an .800 OPS what would lead you to believe they wouldn’t do the same with Doumit? Sure, I’d love for them to get creative and at least give some thought to the idea of Garko catching and playing that same role, but that doesn’t appear to be a realistic hope.
Thing A
Navarro Is Likely To Get A Small Raise Above His First Year Arbitration Salary Of $2.1M
But we would not be obligated to pay him anything in 2011 as we could simply non tender him next off season. That said, the better bet might be to wait for the Rays to non tender him this off season to control better his 2010 cost.
GRM, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sabean pass on catchers this week
for exactly the reason you suggest – wait on the Rays to non-tender him and then rent him for a year. With Pudge now gone to the Nats, Sabean probably feels he can wait for the aftermath of the meetings and see who is left.
Hell, at this rate, Bengie will be lucky to get a one-year deal from someone for $4 million, now that the Mets have gotten fed up with his request for 3, not 2 years.

Where Did You See A Link With Bengie Asking For 3 Years?
by giantsrainman on Dec 7, 2009 10:02 PM PST up reply actions
MLBTR had a piece on that yesterday,
saying that while the Mets were readying a 1 + 1 deal for Bengie and were willing to go to 2 years, his people were talking now about a 3-year deal. This has led to the Mets looking at Barajas now.

He’s a great trade target for a bunch of reasons — he’s coming off a bad year (mostly due to BABIP), his stats are suppressed a bit by playing in the AL, he doesn’t have that defensive-specialist reputation that you have to pay a premium for, his team needs to cut salary, he’s still young despite having been in the league for years.
In other words, no chance we see him in a Giants uniform.
BA-ZING!
