Open Winter Meetings Thread
Thought it would be a good idea to make a post to try and condense all information pertaining to the Winter meetings. So any rumors or tweets worthy of posting can go right here along with any predictions or events people have for these meetings. Hopefully Giants come out of these meetings a better team but I for one am not getting my hopes up for anything spectacular to be done by the Giants. Ginats Brazz!!!1

Yeah
He seems committed to improvement, but what he’s going to give up is the nervous thing.
If we leave these meetings minus FLew and low level prospects but with one Uggla, I will be one happy camper.

Yeah that would be great
I know the Marlins need a yong catcher after Kyle Skipworth struggled mightily in low a. If Sabes pulls off a Johnny Monell and Fred Lewis for Uggla I will almost have confidence in him again

everything I read about the Marlins say that they’re asking way too much for Uggla. Maybe it’s just me or more likely Sabean being full of it, but doesn’t it always seem like everyone wants Posey and Bumgarner from the Giants, but will settle for a bag of balls from everyone else?

I think the Uggla trade is going down. I have no idea who we’ll have to give up and whether that will be too much, but I think it’s going to happen. Rumor has it that the Marlins are starting to get serious about getting something done, and I don’t see any other franchise out there with as much motivation to be a part of that as the Giants.

God forbid
if they DID trade Bumgarner or even Jonathan Sanchez for Uggla they would also have to spend the money on a free agent starter to replace the one they traded, so I think a trade like this would be cost prohibitive. You have to pay Uggla, then you have to pay the replacement as well. I don’t see this happening.

If we trade away Thomas Neal, I may give up being a Giants fan entirely. And that is not hyperbole. There’s no way you can guarantee that Neal will become a star, but he’s exactly the kind of player we haven’t drafted for two freaking decades, and now that we have one, if we trade him for a mere Dan Uggla….

Latest rumors that I have heard
-Sabes personal assistant was seen buying some beers at a local Indianapolis store. This is a big week for Brian and the man probably needs a beer to calm down. Git R Done Sabes!
-Sabes was seen at the hotel bar at 2 am last night discussing financial offers with “Vixen” and “Bambi”. I don’t know what players they represent but they are some attractive agents. Bambi was overheard saying “Brian, that kind of offer is not going to get what you want from me. You are going to have to pay through the nose to go down that road.” Looks like Sabes is playing hardball!
-At 4:30 AM Sabes’ suite contacted the hotel staff for room service. The request? 3 pizzas and 6 cheeseburgers….The man has already worked up quite an appetite. Sabes must be really getting after it!
-At 6:30 AM Vixen was seen leaving Sabes’ room counting a large stack of cash. Was a deal completed? We will let you know when we hear something, but it looks like something is brewing!
-At 7:15 AM Sabes called his personal assistant to tell him he had a long night and wouldn’t be available until 3 or 4 pm. Got to love Sabes. Pulls an all nighter his first night in town!!! The guy has to sleep sometime!

Brian please hit up Dayton Moore and see how much it would cost to get David DeJesus. Royals are shopping him and he’s really not that expensive salary wise. Plays great D, and has a decent OBP. While we’re at it, maybe we can fleece Alberto Callaspo from them too. Offer them Freddy Sanchez. Dayton probably loves gamers too who have been “all-stars”.

I don't get it
The only thing that seems to be fueling this rumor is the fact that Hoyer came from the Sawx org, and BoSox fan seems to think that means this trade is a given.
The Padres do have a nice 1B prospect in Portland however, who I watched play one night in Sac this year, dude can rake. This is the only thing that seems to be in favor of a Gonzo trade.
But, the Padres had a nice 2nd half in ‘09 and have to feel that they will be ready to compete, especially with the nice pitching they picked up in the Peavy deal. Plus, Gonzo is the franchise now so if they are sweating payroll, trading the face of the team will not do very well for ticket sales. I just don’t see it happening.
by toofruss on Dec 7, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well the Red Sox have been the rumored team if Gonzo gets traded at all since June of last year. And that was way before Hoyer was named their GM. I think they’re the only perceived team who has the prospects and money to acquire Gonzo.

Career splits vs lefties-
Eugenio Velez-.214/.281/.256
Granderson- .210/.270/.344
Sure the power and D make Granderson’s line a whole lot easier to stomach than Velez, but if I had my choice I wouldn’t want either one of them facing lefty pitching. I’ll pass on trading Bumgarner+ at least one more good prospect for a guy who hits like a platoon player.

If we could Correia, Navarro/Shoppach, and maybe even Garrett Atkins if the cost is right. He could lower the value for Uggla and if we do get Uggla, Atkins can be a backup

I’m sure we could make a trade that would be enough but it’d be pretty huge, especially given other parties would be interested and us being in the same division. That might tempt them, depending on how they like the specific pieces but it’d have to be something of that order or greater i’d imagine. From MLBTR:
Penny is all but dead and gone to STL, money in place and just needs a physical.
Nick Johnson has 7 suitors, half of which don’t sound right (Yankees, Red Sox, and Seattle)
Seattle is doing its best Paris Hilton and Red Sox impression and is being linked to every FA

Actually
$7.5M base with $1.5M incentives. I’m glad Sabean didn’t try to top that.

Nick Johnson
What’s the hold up with his 2 yr contract request? It not like we have someone ready to replace him.
by Fresburg on Dec 7, 2009 1:41 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
i think it's 2 years
for a guy that has injury risk. If it were me id give him a mutual option like Varitek’s old one. Something like 6 mil then a mutual option of 7 mil (club) and 5 mil (player)

For a team who has been known to give the extra year I’m surprised that they haven’t jumped at it. I’d even prefer a 2 yr + team option year.
