Who Plays Catcher In 2010

So it looks like Bengie won't be back, and Posey's going to start the year in AAA.  It's still clear that Posey will be our catcher by or before 2011, but who should be our backstop come opening day?  Do we sign another decent powered, low OBP option like Rod Barajas or Miguel Olivo?  Make the trade for a Ryan Doumit or Chris Snyder?  Sit tight with Eli Whiteside?  Let the battle begin...

yea thats kinda what I was thinking. If we land Nick Johnson it would be nice to have Doumit as a backup option at first and he could also potentially platoon with Bowker, Velez or Lewis in LF.

Well, we’d get Doumit to start at catcher and get Johnson to start at 1B. The hope would be that Posey would be good enough to force Doumit into something of a backup role where he’d play in a corner outfield spot vs lefties and give Johnson or Posey a day off on other days.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 6, 2009 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

The problem with Doumit is that you will have to be willing to part with prospects. I wouldn’t want to do this for a backup C.

again

He’d begin as the starting catcher and only move to a backup role if the team felt Posey was ready to be called up and be an everyday player. Even then Doumit wouldn’t exactly be your typical backup C. I’m talking about a role where between catcher, 1B, and LF he’d probably start as many games as most of the regulars, and if his bat is as good next year Bill James projects he’d probably be among the 3-4 best hitters on the team. Obviously it depends on what the Pirates are asking for, but his positional flexibility combined with his superior bat makes him by far the most attractive option on this list.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 6, 2009 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

I see your point. On the Giants it might actually work out, but on an actual team with ML players he probably wouldn’t hit enough to play 1B or LF. I personally wouldn’t want to part with players to get him, still.

by Giant among Angels on Dec 6, 2009 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

Oh yea, I agree on another team that wouldn’t be a role where he’d play all that much, but an OPS of .800 is something this team would have to find ways to get into the lineup. If Nick Johnson is signed there will have to be a capable backup for him on the roster and it would be nice to have someone who can play a corner outfield spot and hit lefty pitching well. Of course Ryan Garko could fill both those roles too, but since the team isn’t willing to just turn the catching duties over to Buster full time to start the year and Garko seems likely to be non-tendered, Doumit seems like a guy the team should seriously look at. I don’t have any idea what kind of prospect(s) the Pirates are looking to get for him. I suspect its too much, but considering the options and our current lineup I think he’s definitely worth looking into.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 6, 2009 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

If we get Doumit

he will have to be an everyday player, no platoons.

well he’d start out as an everyday catcher, and if Posey gets called up to be the everyday catcher Doumit could still be an everyday type of player by platooning in the OF and backing up 1B and C. It seems like there would be more than enough ABs between those two spots to qualify him as an everyday player even if Posey is the starting catcher.

Thing A

If I were the Pirates

… and were willing to trade Doumit, I’d be looking for a return that considers him a top-5 offensive catcher.

Posey’s potential aside, it’s rather embarrassing that the Giants are COUNTING on offense form their CATCHER.

It’s nice to have a backstop that can hit, but a competently run team should be able to bat their catcher 8th without batting an eye.

I voted for Ausmus

It makes sense to sign a veteran backup and give Posey the majority of the playing time. Every team in the major leagues besides the Giants would probably look at it this way. Unfortunately the Giants think they need to spend the little money they have on a starting catcher.
I could see them signing Josh Bard and annoiting him the starter, because he had a crazy hot streak back in 2006 after the Padres aquired him midseason. He hasn’t hit well after that ,but we all know Bochy’s selective memory when it comes to shitty hitters

I voted Barajas

I don’t think Ausmus is capable of being a starter for any extended length of time, which is what Sabean has said he’s looking for. Doumit is coming a year with a fluky low BABiP, but I don’t think he’ll hit enough in the long run to stick at 1B/LF. He’d be expensive in trade, so that all kind of falls apart. And Whiteside simply isn’t going to be the starter. After that, it’s kind of pick your poison. I’m not as opposed to Barajas as I am to the rest of the list.

I think he could still get the opening day “honors”. Just frequent rest and bench action from whomever his backup is. We now Sabes and Bochy don’t seem to think wasting Posey on the bench is bad thing. So he plays 60/40 with his backup(s) and doesn’t get to 100 games and wear out.
Plus all this “consensus” not a 100+ game starter could all be BS, the moment he has a hot streak in ST and the new 8 million dollar vet catcher gets hurt because he is lold.

They actually have people on staff with graduate degrees in “how to make athletes stronger.” Am I missing something here? Is this not a fairly fundamental activity for every professional, amateur, college and high school athletic program in America? Design a strength regimen for the kid and put him on it. What’s the issue exactly?

Irony

The Johnny Bench Award was initiated in 2000 for the Collegiate Catcher of the year. Two of them (Garko and Posey) are on the Giants roster.

Pitchers and Catchers report in weeks, and he has no idea who or what he is going to do for a starting catcher?

He doesn’t want to face arbitration with Molina even though he states that Molina already has a two year offer, yet in the call, states he wants draft choices rather than spend money on free agents? Even though he is virtually assured of a free sando pick simply by letting Mantits decline arbitration?

WTF?

Barajas, if he'd take a one-year deal.

And that is in question, as his agent wants two years. And Olivo wants two years as well.

That being said, I think they should definitely fill the catcher slot by way of a FA, rather than a trade.

Hell, if it came down to it, let Garko and Whiteside handle it for 2010 and bat out of the #8 slot.

Responsible for the last great homegrown Giants team.

If it’s one year, I bet Olivo is a Giant.

I vote for Pablo

Put Panda back into a catcher platoon! He was the backup catcher last year…

Other: Ronny Paulino

If the Giants end up trading for Uggla they would be wise to find a way to get Paulino as a throw-in, or perhaps for a lower cost than would be needed in a direct trade.

It’s an option.

Paulino already got his shot with SF and didn’t produce.

.000/.000/.000

Tsk tsk Ronny. You should know better than to do that in a small sample size for Sabes.

0/0 is indeterminate. But since when did math ever get in Sabes’ way while measuring hitter success!

The more I see the options, the more the line of Posey / Garko / Whiteside / Sandoval seems good.

It’s going to be a shame when we non-tender Garko.

Garko can’t play C at the MLB level.
