Have we forgotten about Uribe?

Is it just me, or has Juan Uribe been totally forgotten about?  Last season he was one of our more productive hitters batting .289 with 16 HR in just 122 games.  These aren't the greatest  numbers, but they are pretty damn good.  Plus he was very solid defensively.  In my opinion he was the Giants most consistent hitters behind Pablo.  The Giants should bring him back for at least a back up role or start him over the washed up Renteria.  Uribe proved he could play last season and seemed to always play hard throughout the season despite having to move all over the infield.  Plus he seemed to be a great teammate in the clubhouse, always having a good time.  I don't know what kind of contract he may be seeking, but if the Giants can get him back for cheap they should pursue him.  He was an exciting player to watch all season. He went up to the plate hacking at the ball every at bat and made things happen. Giants need to give him another shot. I understand he isn't a huge bat like we need but he is a solid player that can help the Giants win. Hopefully the Giants can get a impact bat this offseason and give my boy Uribe another chance. GO GIANTS!!

This is the entire issue with resigning him.

He Was Offered 1 yr Plus An Option year That Could Vest

This in all of Sabean’s most recent interviews. Uribe turned the offer down seeking more money. Brian said it did not look like he would be willing to sign for what the Giants were willing to pay.

Uribe really was a one year wonder. if the giants did manage to bring him back I don’t see him putting up the same numbers

"My friend once told me a story about San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum. He said his cousin went out to a bar in San Francisco and saw Lincecum there. He went up to him to give him a handshake.

Lincecum refused. He didn’t want to give him a handshake. He wanted to give him a chest bump."

find a new one-year wonder

The one thing the Ginats have done well in off-seasons the last few years is find junkpile bargains. Better to sign 4 dudes to minor league deals in hope that one pans out than throw money at Uribe hoping he does it again.

I think he’s still an upgrade to Rent and the rest of the lineup, unfortunately, even if it was a fluke.

The club also offered Juan Uribe a one-year contract with an option and buyout language, which also was turnd down. Sabean said it’s fair to assume that neither player will fit at price points the team is comfortable paying, and likely will not return.

by jponry on Dec 5, 2009 9:20 AM PST reply actions

Agree, they need a "Uribe"

Let’s forget about Uribe himself for a sec.

The Giants have:

A SS on his last legs who was the worst hitting regular on the team, and who is not a particularly brilliant fielder at this stage in his career.

A 2B who has been injury prone over the last few years.

A 3B who is absolutely critical to the everyday lineup.

This team needs a semi-regular utility guy like Uribe. He needs to be there to cover the inevitable down weeks of Renteria, DL stint of Sanchez and the occasional moves of Pablo to 1st base.

Uribe himself was nice because, despite his flaws, he brought power—which the team lacked—and he brought it while playing adequate D at 3 positions. Finding another guy like that is not as easy as it seems. And I wouldn’t downplay the club house presence either.

by bendito on Dec 5, 2009 9:21 AM PST reply actions

/ looks right through frandsen…. nope, not on this quad currently.

by giantdonkey on Dec 5, 2009 9:23 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not looking through him, but the Giants are

Not sure Fransden would be a direct comp to Uribe though. Likely better D, but he has not proven to be a hitter in the majors. He would be fine as a strictly bench guy, but as a semi-regular, doubt he could fill those shoes.

by bendito on Dec 5, 2009 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

oh, i agree. unfortunately the giants need that utility guy to be an offensive threat also. most teams have a bruntlett, alex cora or juan castro type. we have to pay more, i guess.

I am just trying to think like the brazz

I would have played Fransden more to give him a chance. But, regardless of what I would do, it seems they have decided.

And we are not just thinking of guys backing up reliable, healthy veterans; we are talking about having guys start a number of games, as many as 80. I personally don’t think that Giants think Rohlinger or Fransden are reliable 80 game starters.

But then again maybe they think Renteria, Sanchez and, potentially, Nick Johnson are good for 150 games each.

by bendito on Dec 6, 2009 9:58 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think they are either, just sayin'

Granted, I think the Giants wasted a lot of time by stringing Frandsen along forever when they could have just thrown him 300 consecutive at bats and then decided to move on.

by tyrannoman on Dec 5, 2009 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

i'n not sure he plays SS

but looks like the cubs are down on fontenot, after one bad year of full time duty. his history might suggest if used properly he has good upside. dunno…

by giantdonkey on Dec 5, 2009 9:36 AM PST reply actions

Not a bad suggestion, actually. It’s tough to know what his true offensive talent level is, which means that teams may wary to pursue him aggressively. In his three (more or less) full seasons he has posted OBPs of 336, 395, and 301 with BABiPs of 325, 353, and 276. It’s pretty likely that his last two season were fluky, but is he really a 330 OBP guy who puts the ball in play with a 320+ BABiP? The sample size for his career still isn’t all that large and he will turn 30 next summer. However, he can certainly play second and third and even shortstop in a pinch, though not that well. Over the course of a season of full-time duty, he is probably a 1-2 WAR player, which is perfectly adequate for a utility man.

According to the Aaron Rowand Standard, and Uribe can play 3 positions, that should be worth about 15 mil a year, only 3 million more than Aaron Rowand gets. Plus Uribe has a cannon.

I'm relieved that Uribe won't come back

He’s not going to repeat his performance from last year.
In fact I bet Renteria is a better then Uribe next year offensively .

I think a potential utility guy to replace him who has some power is Jose Bautista, from the Blue Jays. He’s arbitration elegible, but the Jays will almost certainly non tender him. He’s not a middle infielder but he can play the infield and outfield corners

by tyrannoman on Dec 7, 2009 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

If you care to make a list of former and current hitters from each team still in the league

I suspect that the Pirates’ list would crush the Giants’.

CF: Andrew McCutchen -Rowand
LF: Jason Bay – God, who knows, I guess Lewis
RF: Nate McLouth -um, Winn?
3B: Aramis Ramirez -Sandoval
SS: Jack Wilson -Vizquel, I guess
2B: Freddy Sanchez -ditto
1B: Adam LaRoche -er, Garko?
C: Ryan Doumit -Molina

Do the Giants even win a single position? Sandoval/Ramirez is pretty close; Ramirez has proven himself over multiple seasons, but Sandoval was actually healthy last year.
