Sanchez deal already looks bad
Okay, slight exaggeration, but I preferred Scutaro, and they are essentially the same price.
I think this will be a down year for FA money, no surprise, but Sabean could really get some steals if he's patient IMO.

Scutaro obviously had a great year but i don’t think he’s much different to Sanchez going forward. I think Scutaro signed for a smaller deal than he should have but perhaps it was more important for him to be in the right situation. The Sanchez deal looks good when compared to the Polanco deal.

Just to emphasise my point: Scutaro is a couple of years older but Sanchez missed more time last year. They’re both pretty similar similar hitters for both their careers and their projections for next year. Sanchez is a +6 2B, Scutaro is a -3 SS (0 at 2B) and the positional adjustment between the two is +5. Given that Scutaro signed for the same money and required a 1st round pick the Sanchez deal looks better to me.

Would Have Required Offering Arbitration
Which would have resulted in a one year deal for $8M just like the team option the Giants decided they were better off negotiating down to $6M/yr by adding a second year.

Clearly The Giants Were Afraid Bengie Too Would Choose 1 Yr @ $8M In Arbitration
If that option was available to him. The Giants had no interest in offering more years for a lower salary to Bengie while they clearly had such an interest with Sanchez.

Pay your respect son
It’s FORMER BATTING CHAMP FREDDY SANCHEZ
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
I dunno. Sanchez is younger, but more fragile, and IS actually signed for less money. The Red Sox are giving up probably the equivalent of Tim Alderson, draft-wise. Maybe Scutaro would have torn it up in the NL, but I don’t think this is that bad——unless you compare it to Renteria.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
I don’t disagree with the general sentiment but I would like to point out that the Red Sox are not giving up the equivalent of Tim Alderson in their draft picks, if only for the simple reason that the Giants sunk the cost of the $1.6 million (about) signing bonus into Alderson, which the Red Sox will not have to do with the 1st round pick they lose.
And a 20-year old who has ok stats in AA>>>>>> newly drafted 1st-rounder in the late 20s.
Lethargy
It has me
i still think we have to give sanchez a chance to prove himself over a full year. im as skeptical as the rest of the mccurmudgeons, but you gotta give freddie a chance. if he breaks down again or has a .280 ops after two months, then ill lead the charge against him.

The only problem I have with the Sanchez signing is that it happened so damn fast. Sabean keeps talking about a late developing market and patience, so why did he feel the need to lock Freddy Sanchez up like he was a superstar? If someone HAD grabbed Sanchez quickly after the Giants’ let him go on the open market, based on the names out there they would’ve easily been able to replace him. If Sabean had waited and looked at all the available second baseman on the market and THEN made the decision that Sanchez was the best option for the Giants’, then I think a lot of Giants’ fans would have less problems with the re-signing.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
You can't disrespect a 3 time all star and former batting champ that way.

Sanchy
had to be re-signed, because to not do so would have admitted the crapulence of Brain’s trade for him in the first place, coming as it did once half the season had gone by with only 7 batters in the lineup each day and with no throw-in players coming in the other direction.
Papering over Brain’s mistakes always trumps actual roster or budget concerns.
