I’m not really a big Scutaro fan but i’m surprised he didn’t sign for more than that. I guess he wanted to go to Boston as i bet he’d have got a better deal if he’d waited given the lack of SS options available. Comparing him with Renteria isn’t a particularly useful comparison as the circumstances are quite different.

How are the circumstances that much different? Just because Sabean signed Renteria before the market “technically” took a dump, doesn’t mean that it was a prudent move to jump in and sign him before having a chance to see what the market was going to do.
Yes you can argue that Sabean shouldn’t have jumped in so quickly but the fact remains that the market is different now than it was then. Also the circumstances of the teams are different, we were a team who weren’t looking competitive whilst Scutaro probably accepted less to join the Red Sox.

You’re right. Renteria was coming off of a lousy year, and Scutaro was coming off of a good one.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
I still think this is an overpay. But they are Boston so throwing money around really doesn’t hurt them like it does the Giants.

Really? Fangraphs has loved Scutaro over the past two years (not just last year), and now he moves to a more hitter-friendly park. Plus, they are paying for high-valued marginal wins here.
Is it an overpay just based on the money, or does it only become an overpay when you consider the draft picks?

I think you have to factor the draft picks on a signing like this; especially losing a draft pick within the division. He is 34 and they just gave him a 2-year deal plus a mutual option. This is a deal that Sabean would get killed for.
My overall point is that this is a good move (that becomes a “meh” move when you add the draft picks) for the Sox because the money doesn’t really matter to them like it does the Giants. If it doesn’t work out, they just cut Scutaro loose and move on.

If the Red Sox now sign Holliday, it will make this look better, as they will have given up a 1st and 2nd for Holliday and Scutaro. Plus, they will still have the Braves first round pick.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

First, last year they get a THIRD round pick from the Yankees and this year they would get a second round pick!

They have the opportunity to turn Halladay into the equivalent of at least of couple of 1st rounders. That is, if their new GM isn’t as stupid as the last one.
