Happy New Year!
My resolution is to stop swinging at sliders thrown two feet off the plate. Hopefully, this resolution will be contagious.

I hate sliders!
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Jim] Brower, [Scott] Eyre, [Matt] Herges, [Dustin] Hermanson, [Brett] Tomko, [A.J.] Pierzynski, [Pedro] Feliz, [J.T.] Snow, [Jeffrey] Hammonds, [Dustan] Mohr and [Michael] Tucker—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

My old roommate used to try to get me to play him at Mario Kart and Goldeneye when I was drunk and he was sober. A few times, I was smart enough to say no. A few times, I was just too drunk to play. You have to be really drunk to not be able to play Mario Kart.

No, I’ve never been cited on a bike.
Although I DID once ride my road bike drunk down the same highway that my whopper lifechanging DUI was on. It was right after a storm, and also right after the people I was with had left me at the bar (I just wanted to finish the pool game, dammit)
It was also a freaking blast.

Let’s go 2010. Find a way to hobble over the astoundingly low bar 2009 set for you. I don’t comment a ton, but I extend that wish to the entire McCoven.
And, of course, GO GIANTS.

Yeah, somebody on another forum just voiced the same sentiments… It’s really going to be an entire decade few people will be sad to see go.

Seriously, I have incredibly mixed feelings about the 2000’s. I was 23 in 2000, lost and somewhat alone. I ended this decade knowing what I want to do, on the path towards that, found the love of my life, and married her. All the while, the world was sort of crumbling around us. I mean, who can forget that asteroid that ended the World Series early in 2002? Not me.
Here’s to/fuck off the 2000’s. I have a feeling the next decade will be just like you. Strikes and gutters. Ups and downs. Good luck everyone.

I was 35 in 2000
Some parts of this decade were good to me. Some others were less so. At just about the halfway point of the aughts, I was able to take a year and a half off of work (while still being paid) and travel around to different ballparks watching baseball.
It was the best thing I have ever done. I will always thing back to that particular time in my life with fondness.

Let’s see. On 1/1/2000 I was 21 years old & kind of a mess up. Two weeks prior to that I met & danced with the future Mrs ResDog at a company xmas party. We had our first date in January 2000. In the decade, I got married, had a child, moved halfway across the country, found a decent line of work, purchased one home, sold it, purchased another home & will probably be in the same spot I’m at for the next decade.

P.S. Grant, thanks for the Baroness – Blue Record suggestion. You never quite know where it’s going, but it is enormously listenable. Very cool.

Maps are awesome!
I just got a new atlas and I’m fascinated by the fact that it denotes several de facto independent countries that have little or no international recognition – for example, South Ossetia, Somaliland, and North Cyprus – but it doesn’t denote the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which has de facto independence and is recognized by several dozen countries (but not the United States, so nobody here has ever heard of it, probably).

Dunno what to tell you, yes, i guess i’m spoiled, i’m a jerk, blah blah blah… ok. Parents told me to do well in school, then worry about getting a job during the summer… But this will be the first summer i’ve worked, Dad told me to, and plus i need to
You’re lucky you could postpone growing up a little. I grew up in a single parent family and have been working since I was 15. (Including working 3 jobs while I was going to college.) And quite frankly, at this point in time… I’m sick to death of being “grown up,” and responsible.
Better I think, to have the chance to blow off a little steam and be a “youngin’”
Yea, see? with me, i grew up in a disorganized family, only child… mom did all the work… dad was a drinker… Mom then had cancer, so i’ve kinda had alot of motivation since she was my mentor. It’s great to be young, but at the same time, i need to grow up and be an adult. Mom used to wake up at 5 AM, drive in to the city, get back at 9 PM. I was lucky to see her… that’s why she’s my mentor, she did everything
I'm not stalking you
really. Just saving all the posts to my HD in case they’re relevant at your Supreme Court nomination hearing or something someday.

Apparently “swing dancing” has enjoyed a minor renaissance of sorts in college clubs. She has been doing it for the last three years or so. They travel all over the south east attending events.

You’re probably comparing Kent to any second baseman now, rather than ever, but allow me to say: Rogers Hornsby was a pretty fair hitter.
175 OPS+ in 23 seasons. That’s almost identical to Barry (181 in 22 seasons). And he was a second baseman.

TV Show: Scrubs, seasons one through three. Close: The Office and South Park, which I know has been around since the 90s but has been one of the best and most consistent shows of the decade.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Oh shit
Yeah, maybe The Office over Six Feet Under. The British version, I mean. I like the US version too, but the British version was something special.

I only chose Scrubs over The Office for sentimental reasons. The Office is most certainly better, but it is not my favorite.

Confession
My parents only listen to classical music and my dad thinks that the guitar is a devil instrument, so I never heard The Beatles until I went to college and I’m still not all that familiar with Dylan.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

It's probably because I'm LOLYOUNG
but I don’t really listen to any of that older stuff. I know the Beatles were the predecessors to modern music, and I know Dylan and Hendrix and all those guys forged the way for the people we have now, but I’d just rather listen to modern music.

I respect his song writing, some great tunes. However, just like people having a face made for radio, some people have a voice made for paper, and he is one of them.

I wonder if it’s a generational thing (I know you’re younger than me, but not sure by how much— I’m 31). I’d say there were at least nearly as many good movies in the 90s as the aughts, and the 80s had its share as well, but anything before that is mostly dead to me. Other 90s movies among my personal favorites:
Apollo 13
South Park Movie
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (00s can counter with Snatch)
The Hudsucker Proxy
Go
Fight Club
Noises Off
Face/Off
True Lies
American History X
Rush Hour
Heat
Also 31 & I think the 90s had better films than the Aughts
To Add to your list:
Goodfellas
Reservoir Dogs
Casino
Clerks
Crimson Tide (forever re-watchable)
In the Name of the Father
JFK
Jurrasic Park
LA Confidential (better book)
Office Space
The Good Jack Ryan movies
Saving Private Ryan
Rudy
Seven (SEVEN!)
t2 Judment Day
Big Lebowski
Nightmare Before Xmas
Sandlot
Silence of the Lambs
Toy Story 1 & 2

it just depends on what you want from a phone. If the curve does EVERYTHING you want, then don’t bother upgrading. I want a droid because it’s faster, has a better screen, has android, and has navigation. If none of that matters to you, then don’t bother with it.

I lost a phone on a construction jobsite once – I suspect it fell off when I took a shortcut through a wall that hadn’t been drywalled (Just the metal studs, get it?).
A week later, when I’d replaced the phone and activated the same number I found out what the nationality of the finder of my old phone was – because I immediately began receiving text messages from Mexico.

Indeed it would.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Actually, though, I am starting to get very frustrated with Apple as a company. iTunes is now a terrible program and their continued refusal to make the iPhone available on Verizon galls me. When you add to that their ham-fisted governance of the App Store, well, I’m no longer so fond of Apple.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
I don’t have a Mac because I got an awesome HP for a third the cost of an equivalent Mac.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
This argument has never made sense
macs cost more, but the experience of using one is worth something. Its the same with the iphone. It costs more, but it looks better than anything else and is so much better to use that it makes it worth the money.

Macs aren't overrated
they’re better. But they cost more, too. And it depends on what you’re doing with your computer. Some people NEED a pc because of a certain program or whatever, but even then you can just run windows on a mac. It basically comes down to the money, if you can afford them, macs are better.

IMO itunes is still the best music managing program…and they can’t yet offer the iphone on verizon because they signed a 5 year exclusive contract with att, so they have to wait for that to expire before moving to another network.
Also, the phone is GSM, and verizon is a CDMA network. The only country with a CDMA network is the US, so they’d basically have to re-design the phone only for america.

I have all my music on a pc, and I’m using iTunes. The only problem I have is the lack of transparency in how it organizes the music. I could swear that I’ve burned cd’s in which the artist/song is identical (compilation), but the newest burn overwrites the one that was already resident. I still need to verify this, but there are many times when different versions of the same artist/song title have been released, so I don’t want the overwrite scenario lurking.

The problem is that, in classical music, there are really only a limited number of pieces and these are recorded multiple times by the same groups. When iTunes sees multiple tracks with the same identifiers, it only presents one in its library.

If you are looking for a full fledged intuitive media manager, not many things can beat iTunes for managing visual media and music. Does the AAC4 drm suck, yes. The quality is reasonably good, but I own it and should be able to do anything with it I want.

Songbird is ok for mp3,FreeMac and Pure Mac also offer some good choices.

You are correct of course, if you buy iTunes plus products (music). I should have described it more accurately as Apple’s ULA. There is some very small text in the agreement that limits the number of times a piece can be copied/burned.

I have a lot of shared music (wink, wink) but went to iTunes and other legal sites when the RIAA got really active with the lawsuits. Don’t really want to deal with an $80K penalty for an obscure Outkast song that I downloaded in 1994.
ITunes interface is great. It’s convenient , the product is legal, and the quality is pretty decent. I will burn and re-incode some mp3’s at 320 kpbs if I am running them through the home system, but most just stay on the iPod or Creative. I do like the iPod interface and playlists alot. Much easier to find and play the sets you want.

I loved Skies of Arcadia, but I had a glitched copy that would lock up on the final Gigas. I was never able to complete it. Sega’s hotline was of no help. Completely agree, i believe that having a keyboard with the touchscreen is awesome, but dude, i love the iphone, i think it’s the best phone ever… but, i dunno if paying 199 for it is worth it…
The money is worth it
the problem is that ATT is awful. I’ve yet to hear someone who LIKES att.
The thing about the cost is that you want your phone to work. If you have to pay a little extra for that, it’s worth it. You use your phone every day, and you want it to be a pleasant experience. It’s not worth saving a few bucks if you’re going to be frustrated EVERY time you try to use your phone.
You could always get the “old” iphone 3G for 100 bucks.

Yea, i’m on Verizon, and LOVE IT, so that’s why i’m torn between the Droid or something else… but yes, the money would be worth it, and plus it’s got a TON of talk time… I have a blackberry now, and my Dad wants it, so i just told him i’ll give him my phone and i’ll get the Droid…
Blackberry curve?
That’s what I got. Pretty sweet. I gotta say the droid is amaaaazing.

Yea, the curve is pretty awesome! It does everything i want from a phone… But the Droid just looks amazing and even better, plus i like the fact it is also made with google… so right now it’s between the Droid or the HTC eris… Eris is 100 bucks cheaper
Yeah
the BB does pretty much everything, but the droid does it FASTER! lol so there’s that. I tried out the eris the other day and didn’t like it at all. It seemed really sluggish and the on-screen keyboard didn’t work very well. It might get better with software updates, but for right now I wasn’t impressed.

That’s just because “twenty oh nine” sounds stupid. Whereas “twenty ten” sounds better.

I don’t think “twenty oh nine” sounds bad. I think it’s mostly holdover from 2000. Calling that “twenty oh oh” would definitely be awkward.

Totally arbitrary convention.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
It’s somewhat arbitrary, but it does also have utility. Not as much given the current year, but if we kept going with two-thousand-whatever, we’d end up in the year, say, two-thousand-one-hundred-sixty-four. That’s awfully unwieldy.
"Why not trade Bumgarner for some banger stud?" - sfgiants.com commenter or online porn ad? You be the judge!
Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
Oh, I totally agree. It’s way easier to say twenty-one sixty-four. That doesn’t mean that I prohibited from saying two-thousand ten because I like the way that sounds. There are some usage linguists who pretend that there is a rule and that is just wrong.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Yeah, people should just say whatever they’re comfortable with as long as it’s easily understandable.
Merry Christmas, McCoven. YOU DRINK YOUR DAMN EGGNOG
I agree, somewhat, but there are things that people say commonly that are grammatically incorrect that really piss me off (less instead of fewer, good instead of well, they’re/their/there, then/than, effect/affect).
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Well, of course. Those actually have rules and are incorrect, but years are a completely different situation.
Merry Christmas, McCoven. YOU DRINK YOUR DAMN EGGNOG
makes no difference
at first i was calling it two thousand and ten, but now i’m calling it twenty ten. i’ll rpbably stick with the latter
Some douche, perscriptivist grammar nerd is espousing that. He tried to compare it to the usage of fewer as opposed to less, which is totally off-base because fewer and less are different words entirely. 2010 is a number. The convention of saying nineteen instead of one-thousand nine-hundred was just that, an arbitrary convention with no basis in actual grammatical rules. I’m going to say two-thousand ten and like it!
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
By the way, I too am a grammar nerd.

I don't remember getting to vote on that
but on the other hand I don’t think I’ll pay extra for it. I stopped paying attention to that channel when they started using it to broadcast live events. Just like I gave up on AMC when it started showing lousy movies and Headline News when they switched from 30 minute news broadcasts to 24 hour anchorblabs.

We do have DirecTV for now… come February or March we are switching to Comcast. We can’t get HD DirecTV here and soon we won’t be able to get regular DirecTV as our lovely and wonderful neighbor does everything he can to stick stuff directly in front of our satellite dish and now our “window” is so small we can barely get anything.
We are hoping to move sometime over the summer, and then we’ll have to choose I guess, but we’ve no desire to spend the next 6 months playing “where’s the satellite?”

IMO
they should go Oline and electric return man/offensive player, be it spiller or best or somebody in that mold. Those are their 2 glaringist holes right now, and unless Berry falls all the way to 12 or 13 where they’re picking, that’s what I’d like to see.

I’m going to breakdown the remaining moves the Mets need to make before the 2010 season begins, in order of priority.
1. SP. Health letting, the Mets rotation will be better in 2010, due to one move supposedly completed already and that’s signing Bengie Molina. He is clearly a pitcher’s catcher and brings out the best in his pitchers. He’s caught 3 Cy young winners this decade (Colon, Halladay, TIm Lincecum). Last year, he coaxed tremendous performances out of Jonathan Sanchez and helped Matt Cain finally achieve his potential over the last two years. Anyways, the Mets have Johan, Pelfrey, Ollie and Maine on roster for the 10 season, leaving one spot open.

Oh man
It’s gonna suck when Matt Cain goes back to being a 3.75 ERA pitcher and people claim it’s because Bengie Molina left. And it’ll be even more painful when the Mets staff does pretty much exactly as well as they have done in their careers and nobody notices his lack of any positive effect on them.

Also, Cain’s ERA got worse from 2007 to 2008. FIP too, but I doubt this guy knows what that means.

It’s so emotionally draining being a warriors fan… sooner or later i’m pretty sure the fans are gonna boycott this team and their owner, i’m sure the players would love that too
Unfortunately, the Warriors have Cleveland coming up. Meaning they’ll sell out because of LaBron.
"meh"
Whatever, look, i’ll always be a warriors fan, they’ve been fucked this year due to injuries, but i never have high expectations, that’s what helps… At least it’s not as bad as the sharks where everyone expects playoffs and success… but then fail in the playoffs
One thing about the Warriors that is horrible: Bob Fitzgerald. He doesn’t seem to know what he’s talking about.
"meh"
Jim Barnett though is my hero… I just love his knowledge about the game… I like Fitz, but he’s a big homer commentating, he’s OK, but not the greatest
Fitzgerald said earlier that Brandon Roy is a good reason for players to spend 4 years at college. I guess that’s why Kobe Bryant, LaBron James and Dwight Howard are the three best players in the game. :rolls eyes:

I’ve never been a basketball fan, but I support the Warriors as the “hometown” team (though, really. Oakland.) Growing up in the 80s in the P.I., where basketball is the Only Sport, my mother was a Magic Johnson girl and my father a Larry Bird fanatic. Then my sister became enamored of Jordan. The closest I ever came to rooting for a team was that period late in the 90s and early in the 00s when the Kings were really good, and really primarily because I had a thing for trashy little white boys with attitude problems.

The whole deal with the bidding for the US entrant for 2012 pissed me off. New York only got the bid because 9/11 had just happened and they turned out to have an awful plan. The Bay Area had been working on its bid for years and got shafted.

I mean, seriously. This team has done nothing but be extremely responsible with its drafting ever since McCloughan took over. I’m as negative as the next guy with my sports teams, but they’ve done nothing in their drafts since 2005 to lose my confidence in their ability to pick good players and make smart decisions.

Eh, Balmer… He’s developing, it’s what you expect from a late round DE, never know what’s gonna happen to him… But you don’t say, you were STOKED to get Crabtree? I couldn’t tell

Balmer was a waste of a pick, especially since Jackson was available. I never understood picking him in that situation.

Eh, it’s hindsight, and from what i’ve read from Maiocco, he’s been doing OK, but yes, Niners screwed up on that a few times, but the Balmer pick was OK
A lot of people were pissed when the Niners picked Balmer and then Rachal. I remember they wanted Jackson from the start.

I wasn't pissed per se
I just didn’t see the need for Balmer at all. They already had a bunch of Dlinemen, and he wasn’t a pass rusher. That pick made no sense.

Wow, that’s a pretty interesting comparison… I guess you could say that, Andre Johnson is awesome, catches EVERYTHING, runs PERFECT routes… Crabtree=Vincent Jackson

Well, I kinda view it (fairly or unfairly) that Hill was playing about as well last year at the end of the season as Smith was this season. The only difference is the WR corp is better

Smith is making throws that Hill was making in his dreams
Hill was getting the results on the field, but there’s no way he could make the downfield throws that Smith can. Give Smith some time to work with his WRs and those throws will be there.

Just look at today, the throw to Vernon… BUt you saw that play to Crabtree today? if he would have led him a little further, it’s a touchdown

Some news about Pandoval here.
It sounds like:
- He hasn’t put on weight during the holidays (might have even lost a couple more pounds in addition to the 12 kilos he lost in November)
- The only thing he can buy at McDonalds these days is bottled water
- He’s hoping the Giants will let him keep playing in Venezuela even though he’s scheduled to return to the US for 5 days on 1/14. The last thing he wants to do is abandon the Navegantes (during the playoffs?). He’s negotiating with the Giants – whatever weight regimen he needs to do in the States he thinks he can do just as well over there
- He’s happy about the DeRosa signing – “the team needs offense” LULZ
- He hasn’t been told what position he’ll play in 2010. He’s prepared physically and mentally to play 1B, 3B or C as long as he’s in the lineup daily. He know’s he’s a young player and these things aren’t up to him.
