I'm mildly surprised we haven't already had one of these this month.

1. Favorite/Best Giant?

2. Worst/Least favorite Giant?

3. Favorite non-Giant?

4. Least favorite non-Giant?

5. Best TV show(s)?

6. Best movie(s)?

7. Best book(s)?

8. Best album(s) or song(s)?

9. Best game or sporting event? (not even gonna ask about least favorite)

10. Miscellaneous  (I'm sure I missed something obviously discussion worthy)

The book was very bleak and dark so that sounds like a good start. I’m skeptical, but “No Country” is another McCarthy book that I thought translated very well to the screen, I’ll have to check it out.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 31, 2009 5:05 PM PST up reply actions

"No Country " did translate well because they had the coen brothers doing it

This was beyond bleak, and there were moments that almost everyone in the theater couldn’t watch. I heard people crying in the theater. I was pretty close at some parts too, not because it was sad, but really because it was hard to watch. No Country’s adaptation was much easier to watch. I will never watch the “Road” again because it would be hard to forget some of the images that movie had, but i will still rec it to you, because it is a good movie.

The story of the Road wasn’t that difficult to tell. It was more about isolation & the battle of staying righteous in the worst conditions. No Country had a longer story & more meaning behind it. No Country the movie was bound to not capture everything.

Not saying that your opinion is invalid, but you are literally the first person I have ever heard say that Season 2 was their favorite. It was my least favorite, and by a good margin. Just Ziggy himself brought that season down a few pegs for me.

Seriously though, my favorite season was season 4. That was the season that really put that series over the top for me.

by sunnyd100 on Jan 2, 2010 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

thanks

for not invalidating my opinion.

I find the decline of industrial America (which consists of like 90% of its land area outside the Bay Area) a very interesting topic, and the effects on the working class poorly addressed in most media (if not totally overlooked). On a more mundane note, it was interesting to see a show featuring pursuit and capture of white drug pushers.

Finally, I was totally underwhelmed by the total shift away from the “corner boys” at first, and just as blown away by the whole season. It’s what changed that show from just another cop vs. gangstazzz to something totally different and interesting. The ending montage of that series with Ziggy’s brother looking over the fence as the condos are dynamited is one of the most powerful I’ve seen.

But, that’s just my opinion.

SPOILERS

From Wiki:

At the end of the series, it is revealed that Tyler’s 2008 and 1973 realities were both fictitious, created by the onboard computer of a spacecraft that is carrying Tyler, Hunt, Norris, Carling, and Skelton on the first ever manned mission to the planet Mars, in 2035… To sustain the crew, their minds were routinely kept active while asleep using virtual reality “neural stimulation” programs of their own choosing, but Sam’s choice of a scenario where he was a police officer circa 2008 was abruptly changed to a 1973 setting by a meteor-storm induced glitch in the computer.

I really enjoyed reading these. But when you get here this late in the thread, you risk repeating. So I’ll try to be original and do a list without repeats.

1. Favorite/Best Giant?
Rich Aurilia, if we’re considering the whole decade.

2. Worst/Least favorite Giant?
Hard to be original here, as there are two obvious options. To be different, I’ll go with Tsuyoshi Shinjo for the combination of high hopes and terrible returns.

3. Favorite non-Giant?
Nick Johnson. Gotta love a guy with Pujolsian OBP without the IBBs.

4. Least favorite non-Giant?
Sooo many choices. I’m going to go with Jimmy Rollins, for constantly acting like the star he’s not.

5. Best TV show(s)?
To be honest, my favorite shows of the decade have all been mentioned. But curiously overlooked is The West Wing.

6. Best movie(s)?
High Fidelity. Don’t make fun of me.

7. Best book(s)?
The Da Vinci Code. Mock if you want, but it made reading popular again for adults early in the decade, and I’m down with that.

8. Best album(s) or song(s)?
Best Album: I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning by Bright Eyes.
Song: Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes

9. Best game or sporting event? (not even gonna ask about least favorite)
Game 6 of the 2003 World Series. No Giants involved, but I loved watching one of the biggest underdogs of all time win IN New York.

He’s been a great player for the past five years or so, 2009 aside, and he’ll probably go back to being great next year. Also, his 2007 really was fantastic, if not MVP worthy. It should have gone to Utley or Wright, but it’s not one of the worst decisions we’ve seen in the past few years.
