My plan for the rest of the offseason...

Well my plan is pretty basic.  Acquire a first baseman.  Sign a catcher.  Sign a fifth starter.  Sign a reliever.  Pray...

Star-divide

I advocate signing Adam Laroche.  Yes I know that he has similar career numbers as Garko.   However I think that Laroche is better because he hits right handers better and has shown more power (20+ HR for five straight seasons).  He has also had success at AT&T park (1.200+ OPS.. yes it's only 50 at bats but still).  The key to signing Laroche is the money.  In my opinion he is a good deal at 2 years, $15 million.   Any more years or money is unreasonable.

As a backup plan I advocate exploring a trade for Lyle Overbay.  He consistently puts up OPS above .800 (though he struggles against lefties).  He also has about league average defense at first (around +0 UZR for his career).  He has one year, $8 million dollars left on his contract.  The benefit of signing him would be that we could pursue someone else next year for first base.  I would try to get him for something like Fred Lewis and a C level prospect.

Afterwards I think we should try to sign Kiko Calero to a 2 year $5 million deal.  We also need to sign Rod Barajas or another catcher for a 1 year $2.5 million deal.  Finally lets get a starting pitcher like Braden Looper, Josh Fogg or Adam Eaton to a one year $3 million deal.

Then our lineup would be:

2B Freddy Sanchez

RF Nate Shierholtz/ John Bowker

3B Pablo Sandoval

1B Adam Laroche

LF Mark Derosa

CF Aaron Rowand

SS Renteria/Uribe

C Barajas/ Posey

P

Seems like a decent lineup that has a chance to compete depending on the growth by Shierholtz or Bowker and production from the veterans.  However with a good pitching staff and bullpen and some luck we would have a shot at playoffs.

I’m so glad you posted this. Now that I know your plan I will be able to sleep peacefully tonight. Thanks again for taking the time to let us know we need a 1B and a catcher.

I have finally accepted the fact that I will never win a McCoven award.

No outfielders involved in this nice little rosterbation scene; therefore, it won’t be making Merope’s ticker.

Fogg or Eaton for 3 mil is way too much

I’m also not a huge fan of Barajas but at this point its either him of Yorvit.

LaRoche and Overbay are good. Calero and Looper are also fine.

Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010

A trade for Ryan Doumit could help at C/1b and some power.
Ante up and sign LHP Aroldis Chapman
Sign a tablesetter (Lopez/Damon/Pods) so when Sandoval gets his ABs he has some ducks on the pond

Plus, it’s not like Chapman is going to be pitching in the bigs this year. Most pundits think he’ll be starting the year in HiA or AA.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Dec 31, 2009 4:30 PM PST up reply actions

don't sign Looper he sucked last year, Fogg is a terrible starter, and Eaton is horrible

Better options include Pedro Martinez, Vicente Padilla, john Smoltz, or washburn
The hitters are fine, except i doubt we could get Kiko or Barajas
Also I think it would be better to sign Marlon Byrd, play DeRosa at third, and Pablo at first, because Byrd is a better hitter and we need an outfielder, a true outfielder who can be a leadoff guy

My thoughts

Barajas had 71 RBI last season – a career high by far. You may argue that he had peaked already, but we might as well get him now for one season while the getting is good.

Calero is a reliever Sabean must pounce on and sign.

I’m not so sure about Fogg and Looper, but I know Adam Eaton SUCKS!!! I MEAN…HE’S TERRIBLE!!!

See Cornball’s statement above; however, if you’d like to go back and count up all the infielder rosterbation posts since the season ended be my guest!

I believe the count on outfielder rosterbation posts is 34ish.

Random thoughts

I was looking at possible starting pitcher FAs that the Giants can sign and, let me just say, that the list includes some good ones.

Here are the ones that stood out to me:

Cha Seung Baek
Erik Bedard
Doug Davis
Chien-Ming Wang
Jarrod Washburn
Pedro Martinez (He probably can’t go a whole season, though.)
Aroldis Chapman (Ya, right…)

You’ll only kill one person, though, so it doesn’t really mean anything. If you were going to kill a statistically significant number of people, that would be something. But just one? Psh.

Francisco Liriano

Apparently the Mariners are kicking around the idea of making a swap.

What about the Giants reaquiring Liriano? Injury risk, arbitration eligible, and off year in 2009, but still young and talented.

Pray for a snow drift.

Why not Joe Mauer?

He’s a pretty good catcher. And when we decide to go with Posey, we could move Mauer to first, Panda to third, and be okay. The Twins would probably trade him to us for, I don’t know, Bocock and Rowand maybe.
Okay, back to the real world.

maybe

but he’s not so dangerously fat that his body will spontaneously combust/be rendered totally unable to hit if he catches more than 3 games. Cf. Sandoval, Pablo. Compare, Posey, Gerald.
