Juan Uribe re-signs; roster decisions loom
With Juan Uribe coming back, and with the Giants still looking to add a bat and possibly another reliever, the organization will have players spilling over the sides of the 25- and 40-man rosters. The 25-man roster will have a permutation of the following players:
C
Posey/FA
Whiteside
INF
Ishikawa
Sandoval
Sanchez
Renteria
Uribe
DeRosa
Frandsen
OF
Rowand
Bowker
Schierholtz
Torres
Velez
Lewis
SP
Cain
Zito
Sanchez
4th starter/Bumgarner
5th starter/Lincecum
RP
Wilson
Affeldt
Romo
Medders
Runzler
Valdez/other
That’s 26 players, not including the BIG BAT that is sure to show up any day now. Actually, I included Frandsen only because he’s out of options. He has a slightly better chance of making the roster over Tom Brokaw, but that’s only because Brokaw’s hip is acting up. So the 25-man-roster is set until the Giants a) acquire another player, or b) decide to go with a 12-man pitching staff.
If the Giants really do acquire another hitter, which of those outfielders is expendable? Which one of those outfielders doesn’t help the Giants’ chances of winning baseball games in 2010 more than the other players on the list? Yeah, that’s the one I was thinking of too. But he’s a starter now. Remember those 100 at-bats in July?

Yeah, and it’s only December. The beating will get much worse as March approaches. I’ll make that horse pay.
So if the Giants acquire another hitter, either Bowker goes to the minors (which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if he isn’t starting in the majors) or Lewis is traded/designated. That'll teach him to take a walk.
I guess that’s not really as complicated as I thought. I just wonder what Brian Sabean thinks when Velez’s name never comes up in trade talks. "Oh, they must know he’s untouchable," probably. "That’s why they don’t ask for Lincecum, either."
Open Roster Logistics Thread. I think that Brian Bocock actually has a chance to be removed from the 40-man roster this time.

God I really don't have a clue why Velez is playing
Burris had that hot streak where he brought his average up to .290 then it fell again and then he got demoted…I wonder why Velez hasn’t. I’m praying that a expected terrible showing at ST will cause his ass to be shipped down to AAA along with a trade with Frandsen + Tanner/Bucardo for Uggla. /fantasy

Velez is in line to start because his .445 sly against eighties last year will fits with the platoon, and the team needs a leadoff hitter. Apparently the FO has seen enough of lewis, who had similar power, walks more, and plays worse defense. And I doubt Velez will fail in ST because he’s put up some of the best numbers on the tream two years in a row.

making me look up the numbers to defend my point…
velez hit .315/.359/.493 in Spring Training 2009. I couldn’t find the 2008 numbers but according to my memory he hit better than that.
Based on those last two years, I don’t expect him to do terrible in Spring 2010.

he’s not expecting Velez to hit terribly in ST, he’s hoping that he does.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
No I did say expected, but it was more out of sarcastic bitterness than anything. I hope he phails in ST yeah,
If he kicks up his OBP a bit that will be more palatable but thats like telling Bengie Molina to get faster,

I think he’s saying that Bochy & Sabean look at ST #‘s. And that Velez has hit well the past two springs so he expects him to hit well again. He doesn’t necessarily think Velez is the best option to start in left.
He also says you should quit your job & start smoking pot all day.

But really, is he a leadoff hitter?
He doesn’t fulfill any of the requirements, He hacks at everything, isn’t fast on the basepaths, and doesn’t hit for average. Say what you will about BA meaning nothing, but the guy a few hot weeks then promptly cooled off until he hit that leadoff hr off of an underestimating Pedro Martinez. He might be a starter next year but he is definitely not the ANSWER. =/

I agree he isn’t an ideal leadoff hitter. Lewis is probably the only person on the 25-man who is, but it doesn’t look like he will be on the team. I’m all for signing Damon to fill the position.

I’m starting to think the best move for a bat is to trade for Uggla rather than sign LaRoche. Not because Uggla’s a better hitter (although he probably is, slightly), but because maybe we’d be able to convince them to take Frandsen and Lewis, and maybe they’ll get a chance to play in Florida.
It’s a bit sad that my hopes for this team now revolve around our players finding employment elsewhere.
I was just thinking we needed another second baseman.

Whats good about Uggla though is that he also can play LF. We must fill our roster with guys who can play as many positions as possible.

I don’t believe the Kouzmanoff rumors. But either way we’d probably have to add something else to make a trade for Uggla work. Valdez? That and this.
Too me the this franchise doesn’t need to mass import “almost” average any more. So frankly I don’t want managment falling a sleep at the wheel thinking .ok. 2 out of 3 years form a vertean is good enough. Call it the J.T. Snow effect if you will.
/ Chants, " Olivio, Jacobs, Podsednik" Then smacks head with a 1 X 6. This will continue tell the pain decreases and moral improves.
more important to me is the fact that on a 2 year contract, he’s off the books in 2012 when Cain is a free agent.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
meh
3 (or even 6) mil isn’t going to hamstring the franchise into not being able to afford Cain, not to mention a league average replacement will probably cost at least that much, since 1b in the minors is pretty barren.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.

LaRoche isn't "almost" average
he’s above average. This franchise has exactly one above average position player. One. Having “above average” locked down for 3 years at a position where there really isn’t anything on the horizon in the minors is a good thing.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends

The negative about LaRoche is that I heard his work ethic is poor. It was the reason why Atlanta dumped him the first time.
"meh"
Neal isn’t on the horizon? Also there are a couple better than LaRoche options likely to hit the FA market next offseason. I’d rather trade for Burrell or Overbay.
Thing A
Say what?
Over his career he’s been a substantially below average player. He has been very slightly above average for 3 of the last 4 seasons, but is not projected to be above average next year. CHONE in particular thinks he’s just this side of worthless.
O'Hara: Detective Lassiter is literally on fire.
Spencer: What kind of fire are we talking about-- "Michael Jackson in the Pepsi commercial" fire, or "misusing the word literally" fire?
um
his first 2 seasons sucked, the above average, above average, slightly below average, above average. He’s probably not going to be worse than slightly below average, and that is well worth $6M/yr.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.
You always have to be one step ahead of your drunk friends
--Daisy Owl
yeah but...
Just because he has been above average does not mean he will continue to be above average. That being said, I wouild be more than comfortable at 3/18, I’m must afraid it will be 3/27
by theimmortalbenard on Dec 31, 2009 8:28 AM PST up reply actions
true
but it’s not like he’s 35 and coming off an injury or anything. I think he’s got a high likelihood to maintain at least (near) average performance levels for at least 3 years. That being said, 3/27 would be too much for me.
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.

Would you be happier with arround instead of almost?
The main bone of contention here is not that I am unwilling to have arround average players on the 2010 or 2011 25 man but i realy don’t what the team tieing up much money or 25 roster spots for arround average. It has 1 very bad side effects.
1) there is money to keep the elite very goood players arround with.
2) It blocks the albity to use the farm as anything except a place to get pitching and try and trade position players from. If we are not willing to play our position players ourselves then why the heck should another team trade for them whn all they have to do is wait for options to run out or DFAs?
In this case the money might not be bad ( iif around $6M/year) but you are also clogging up a postion that anyone with good hands, knees and a back should be able to fill in if their stick is good. It is a bit like collecting all the #6-#8 hitter a team can then expecting have a hart of the order bat in there.
/ Chants, " Olivio, Jacobs, Podsednik" Then smacks head with a 1 X 6. This will continue tell the pain decreases and moral improves.
yes.
1) 6M is nothing in baseball $.
2) There’s nothing at 1B that could even hope to be average on the farm (unless you want to drive down Neal’s value by moving him to 1B) Also, I’m not a fan of just taking someone with a good stick and handing them a 1B glove and hoping they adjust in the majors just because it’s an “easy position”.
We’re already collecting all the 6-8 hitters. LaRoche is better than a 6-8 hitter. His stick is around average for a 1B, that’s a 5 hitter at the worst.
Again – We have 4 average or above position players on the roster right now. 4. Four. There is no world in which signing another for 6M a year is a bad decision. Hell, if Bowker/Schierholtz can manage average, that’s 6/8 of the lineup. If Posey can hit at a league average level, we have ourselves an average offense!
Sharlon Schoop - de favoriete Nederlandse honkbalspeler van McCovey Chronicles.

Re #2 i like the option open. Considering the rate otherr postions are being filled by SAbean with the over 32 crowd we will be locked up rather quickly.
As for the last paragraph I have littel qualms for th next season or two. But Again i don’t want all the spots on the lower end of the defnsive spectrem locked up with “arround average” vets or sabean with go back to his circa 2001 way on the farm again.

well to be fair
LaRoche JUST turned 30. DeRosa’s only here 2 years, Rent is gone after this year, Sanchez is here 2 years, and we have a corner OF spot open in the meantime. The only hitter on the farm who looks like he’ll be ready soon is Neal, and he’s a September callup at the earliest IMO. And again, we have nothing at 1B on the horizon.

oh my, while searching for Fred Lewis content on MLBTR, this came up from 2007
It seems the Mariners and Reds in particular are pushing for Lincecum. The Ms could offer Adam Jones; the Reds have Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, and Josh Hamilton.
The Giants and Orioles discussed Miguel Tejada, and the O’s like players such as Jonathan Sanchez, Brad Hennessey, Fred Lewis, and Guillermo Rodriguez.
And the Mets finally get their guy!
The one team inquiring on Bengie Molina was the Mets, and that was before they got Brian Schneider.

I would like one of the following on reasonable terms:
Johnny Damon to play LF and hit leadoff, DeRosa at 3b and Panda at 1b
Adam LaRoche to bat 3 and play first, keeping panda at 3 and moving derosa to LF
Dan Uggla to bat 3 and play 2b, moving Franch to 3b and panda to 1b
Because LaRoche would keep panda at 3b, he might be my favorite option. But I’m OK with any of those three, and if any of them were gotten, I’d consider this offseason a success.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.

Assuming of course “reasonable terms”.
by giantsrainman on Dec 30, 2009 12:33 PM PST up reply actions

Terms I would be willing to accept, pulled out of my ass:
Damon: 2/22
LaRoche: 3/20
Uggla: FLew, Frandsen, Valdez? Some combination thereof? I really have no idea on this one.
Maybe I’m overpaying, but maybe we have to to get people out here.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
overpaying? Look, the Marlins might be desperate to move Uggla, but if the Padres wouldnt trade Kouzmanoff for Lewis and Frandsen, do you think the Marlins would trade Uggla for them?
You aren’t overpaying, you’re overvaluing.
Also keep in mind that the Marlins have to know that Lewis and Frandsen are in no way part of the Giants future plans, which belittles their trade value even further.
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
Yeah
The ‘overpaying’ comment was more geared towards the FA money amounts.
I’m the first to admit I have no idea what it would take to get Uggla. Maybe we need to throw in some of our AAAA pitchers? Martinez? Pucetas?
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
Ah, sorry for jumping on you so quickly then. I think its necessary for us to overpay for a variety of reasons. I do hope the market falls out a bit though.
Marlins seem firm on getting someone of decent quality for Uggla (J Sanchez) and hopefully that falls out too if they really can’t afford him
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
I haven’t heard any discussions of that trade that do not mention Jonathan Sanchez.

Hey Fred Lewis, remember Mother's Day?
by anotherbadexcuseguitar on Dec 30, 2009 12:45 PM PST up reply actions
No. The Marlins have no choice but to trade him, they cant afford his salary. Sanchez might be worth Uggla straight up, but if the Ginats are also taking on an 8 million dollar contract it would be an overpay. Not to mention, we dont even have a solid 5th starter. Contrary to popular belief, we really cant afford to trade SPs. If we trade Sanchez, who will take his spot? We could sign another pitcher, but we are on a budget.

I’d say Hanley is better “all around” than Albert since by definition it includes defense.
"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.
well Albert is godlike in the field and I’m still not quite buying HanRam’s fielding, I’d like to see at least one season of positive UZR ( two days I realized I called it OOZR pronunciation wise and not actually saying the letters, weird)
Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?
Pujols also plays 1B, the easiest position to field. HanRam plays the hardest position to field outside of catcher. I’m pretty sure the worst SS is still more valuable defensively than the best 1B.

Yeah, Sabes should definitely not trade Sanchez for Uggla, and I think if he had been willing to at this point, that deal would be done. However, if the Giants land one of the better 5th starter candidates, I think the risk goes way up that Sabean will start to see Sanchez as expendable, believing (incorrectly) that getting Uggla would help the team even if that meant YEAH JOEY would be the 5th starter.

right right thanks.
Then theres this whole thing:
Crasnick writes that the first obstacle would be financial. The Giants will have to give Tim Lincecum a major raise in arbitration and are already hamstrung by the contracts of Barry Zito and Aaron Rowand. Uggla is expected to make more than $7MM in 2010.
Of course, nobody actually knows how much money we have to spend though
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
THIS
IMO this is a byproduct of the FO’s poor management of position player prospects. They bring them up too soon, move them from position to position then send them down. Rinse – Repeat until either a) the poor kid’s confidence is shattered or b) he never gets comfortable but his stats unfairly represent him as “not good enough for the bigs”.
Either way the prospect’s value as trade bait is wasted.
If the FO had the ability to REALLY evaluate talent it would go like this:
Frandsen is raking in Fresno, but the FO knows he wont translate to the majors but they leave him down and talk him up as “a hot prospect” that we are taking a long-term approach with. Then they can use him in a trade as he still has nothing but upside since nobody has seen him against big league pitching.
Instead they bring him up and expose him and his tradeability is wasted.
One other problem that goes hand and hand with this is that the Giants were struggling so much offensively last year that they had to bring up pretty much whatever option possible from AAA to help the big league club (Downs, Rohlinger, Bowker, Guzman, Frandsen, etc etc) and didn’t have the luxury of letting anyone stay in AAA who was actually hitting
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
Thank you . . .
Why do we think other teams are interested in our rejects? Come on, Uggla is a talented bat, young enough, even if he doesn’t have great hands. Play him at 1B. DeRosa in LF. Leave Panda at 3B. And understand that the Marlins are going to want talent for talent.
Don't believe everything you think.
let me ask you this.
If you wer another team why would you pay for a Giants postion prospect when you know they are not liekly to play them on the 25 man?

Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
Garko career wOBA: .347
Laroche career wOBA: .353
Is the upgrade really worth what we’re probably going to end up paying?
LaRoche has been worth like double the WAR for the past two years
Garko has that wOBA because he’s a platooner who’s good against LHP, so his numbers get inflated. LaRoche is much better against RHP, and is a better candidate to be a full-timer.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
Double the WAR is still just a 2-2.5 WAR player. Garko was pretty damn unlucky last year, I think over a full season he could get close to 2 WAR. We’re going end up paying a lot for a guy that’s not a significant upgrade.
In His Last Four Years Garko Has Produced Just 3.6 WAR In 1713 PAs
In Thes Same 4 Years LaRoche Has Produced 8.9 WAR In 2372 PAs. Even if we are kind to Garko and assume no penalty for facing more righties and just adjust his WAR for the additional 659 PAs he only gets to 5.0 WAR. Bottom line, LaRoche is the significantly better player.

Why Are so Many So Willing To Conclude Already That Both Freddy Sanchez And Ryan Garko Suck?
I hear here all the time that the Giants are too quick to give up on youngsters because of bad small sample size results and yet so many of those with this complaint are guilty right now of doing the same to Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Garko. Both are in the primes and both have a much larger sample size of sucess with their previous major league teams. The fact is that the odds favor these two returning to their first half 2009 form in 2010 for the Giants.

Further, what LaRoche has been asking for does not matter as he ain’t getting it. The max three years at max $7M/yr he is going to get is what matters and the upgrade he represents is worth this.

LOL GRM fail again
As you know, but chose to ignore, WAR is dependent on playing time.
LaRoche’s career wRC+: 116
Garko’s career wRC+: 113
LaRoche’s career UZR/150 at first: -4.3
Garko’s career UZR/150 at first: -4.6
And yes, what LaRoche is looking for is relevant, since that’s going to hold him back from signing. Just because you say that he’ll get 3 years max at $7m/yr max doesn’t make it true.

Has he really now?
LaRoche v. RHP: 2534 PA; v. LHP: 696; so ~78% of his PA’s have been against righties
Garko’s % v. righties: ~72%
I mean, I guess Garko has benefited a little bit from being platooned, but it’s not like he’s seen even close to a majority of his PA’s versus lefties.

Why am I not surprised by this:
–DeRosa had other offers, but other teams saw him more as a contingency plan. DeRosa said he always enjoyed playing in San Francisco and the Giants showed the greatest interest in him. "I was just tired of being a lot of team’s plan B," he said. "I wanted to go to a place where I felt comfortable and the team wanted me and needed me to be productive. I just felt this was a good spot. I didn’t want to wait around and get caught in a situation where I’d have to go somewhere I didn’t want to go."

It’s the usual progression and what they did with Rafael Rodriguez, if I’m not mistaken. A year of actual coaching (and continued physical maturation) in the DR, then move to the States in a low-stakes, short-season league before you toss the still-teenage prospect into a full-season league against college players.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
I mean, you have to remember that the elite Latin prospects are usually 16 (or claim to be). The elite prospects in the US and Asia are 18-22. 22 is a lot older and it would be pretty unfair to expect a 16 year-old who has never been in a strength and conditioning program to succeed against guys that played at elite college programs for three or four years. Even high school kids in the US have more consistent access to coaching and exercise facilities. Plus, there are all kinds of cultural factors that make it sensible to make the transition a little more gradual than just throwing a kid into low-A ball.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
you know, I’ve never heard of any players from the DR have cultural factors or any outside factors for that matter effect his rise to the big leagues
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
I’ve never heard big leaguers talk about it, either, but you’d have to think that moving to a foreign country and learning a new language while learning how to play a professional sport at a high level against other talented professionals has to be challenging. It would be interesting to what that process was like.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Ahh
I’ll miss hearing about him this year. Still, I really would like to hear a player like Omar Vizquel talk about the transition to playing in the States. I bet it would be very enlightening.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

Kelly Johnson gets one year, $2.3 million from the Diamondbacks. I think it’s pretty likely that Kelly Johnson outplays DeRosa over the next couple of years.
I mean this is rediclolous
- Kelly Johnson is about as good as Freddy Sanchez, and is 4 years younger.
- Ryan Garko is about as good as Mark DeRosa (maybe better, considering DeRosa pushes Pablo to 1B), and is 6 years younger.
- Milton Bradley is about as good as Johnny Damon (who apparently people want us to sign), and is 4 years younger (though more injury-prone).
Kelly Johnson costs $2.3M (and would have almost definitely signed for, say, 2 years $7M). Ryan Garko will cost about $2.5M (and would have signed for 2 years $7M). Bradley will cost $6M over two years and a shitty pitcher.
Freddy Sanchez will cost $12M over two years. Mark DeRosa will cost $12M over two years. An optimistic projection for Damon is $14M over two years (what the Yankees offered him).
Our optimistic projection is that we’ll only pay $38M over two years for what we could have easily had for $20M and a shitty pitcher.
Unless shitty pitchers are the new market inefficiency, that’s $9M a year wasted on nothing. That money is what it would cost to sign the top-3 Latin prospects available both this year and in 2011.

I don't know anything about minor league players, so I adopted the Coke Bottle, and it's totally grown on me.
'The longer I do this the smarter I get' --Brian Sabean
Well, at first when we were checking the disk, it didn’t show up anything bad. But we were trying to just reinstall OS X and Snow Leopard last night, but the Software Update somehow got screwed up and whatever was wrong with the Hard Drive finally became obvious (it flat out said it was corrupted, said Disk Util couldn’t fix it, etc). So we wiped it clean to factory settings and reinstalled everything and it’s been running great since then.
You were, of course, right all along! And I have to thank you, without your advice, we might not have known what direction to go in. (And I’m glad we ended up fixing it ourselves.)

The DeRosa signing certainly seems to put to rest any speculation that the Giants are still interested in Uggla. Now, the Giants are still searching for a power bat, but Uggla doesn’t appear to be a fit. I expect the Marlins to be very active in January, re-signing their arbitration-eligible players and exploring trades for Uggla and reliever Renyel Pinto.
There remains a chance Uggla can sign with the Marlins, but even if it reaches that point, look for the club to still explore trade options. The closer we get to the start of Spring Training, the more willing teams may be to make a deal. It will be interesting to see if the Marlins sign Uggla, bring him to Spring Training and look to complete a trade before Opening Day. Once teams are in Spring Training, there may be some injuries that re-open a market for Uggla.
How does someone with seemingly no knowledge of baseball write for MLB.com

Assuming he was not put on the 40-man roster until 2008 when he was called up for the first time, he still has an option left. He would not have needed to be added to the 40-man roster until after the 2007 season (started at S-K in 2004), so it seems pretty clear that he must have an option left.
It shouldn’t matter because he should be getting plenty of major league PAs. But it is the Giants, so since they’re not going to play him anyway he should go to Fresno and work on carrying the mail.
I think that Bowker deserves another shot, even if his batting average and power don’t miraculously return, if he can lay off those breaking balls, he’ll get on base much easier

I heard a half hour, and several calls, about sports bars in Bloomington as he re-lived his college days.
Boring midwest sports talk is boring. Ignorant sports talk is ignorant. The other guys are either covering some team or other (Fitz and Brooks), former jocks (Gary and Tolbert), or a broadcaster (Ralph). Dumbon has nothing to recommend him. With the exception of the morning frat boys, no one talks so much about “irrelevant” teams.
I think he’s the worst about screening callers too; I suspect he HAS to take some of them because his board is empty. The morning frat dudes have the same problem but fewer drunk callers.

Too much golf, and they spent one morning talking about ball-shaving and vasectomies, which was the last time my radio alarm went off to them.
But they come off as actual fans of the teams they cover, particularly the Niners. And they sound awake at 5 or whenever they come on, which is good since they’re pretty much not going to get any callers.

I actually seem to only like Murph and Mac when they’re not talking about sports. Murph’s interviews are painful, and he’s always trying to either give an awful nickname to a local player that he likes or to unfairly criticize a local player that he doesn’t like.
Luckily, they go off on lots of tangents, so that keeps it relatively fresh, and there bits can be funny. I do wish they wouldn’t rely so much on their soundboards, though.

Pretty much, Fitz covers the Irish… Brooks is LSU…
But honestly, i don’t care about it. That’s just my opinion, there can only be so much talk about Bay Area sports… i like the diversity in what they talk about, where they cover the national sports talk and yea, Gary can get a little off topic and shows off a ton. But honestly, it doesnt bother me one bit since i would get very bored if every call that came in was about “oh yea, the giants need a hitter…” blah blah blah…
So with Damon, don’t care if he talks about Indiana, i’ll just sit in the car and talk about how they suck, because IU has not done shit in the past couple years, they blow in Football and basketball lately hasn’t been good
I would respect Damon Bruce if he actually believed what he said. I don’t think he does. He is saying it just to say it.

that’s where you have the option of changing the station for a bit… there can be tooooo much KNBR, that’s where i switch it to live 105, or something like that
I haven’t listened to Bruce in years. I mean I might catch a few minutes, like I did today when I couldn’t get to the radio fast enough… but no. There are some real controversial issues in sports: salary caps, overtime rules, head shots, BCS, instant replay, playoff structures, ideal rosters etc etc… you don’t need to make up a bunch of bullshit just to stir a fictional pot.
I’m sorry my feeling is that if you get PAID to be informed about sports and talk about them for a living… you should spend your time trying to discuss actual issues, not ones you pull out of your ass to piss people off.
that's kind of the KNBR schtick
Gary doesn’t talk about sports much, if at all, either. But he does that by talking nonsense rather than “pretending” to be dumb.
I think the midday show is the most sports-focused one, but in general I think it’s supposed to be beer commercial guys swilling in the basement with their “bros”; the programs let those who lack that aspect in their life can tune in for a while to listen.
Dumbon B. isn’t even good for that; he’s the guy everyone moves away from at the bar so that they don’t have to hear his “opinions”.

Because it’s OSU, ohio state is football, so i mean there’s a problem if they’re not good, it’s like USC when they suck
This is one of the few problems I have with college sports. The national media seems to think there’s a problem with the whole sport (or conference) if the power teams aren’t any good or aren’t as good as the national media says they [the teams] are. I don’t think that’s a problem. I think it’s good because then we get to see different teams in the big games and get to learn about other coaches and programs. But Dr Lou disagrees with me, so I must be wrong.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Yep, pretty much THIS. I have no idea how USC got into the top 25, they didn’t deserve it… OSU did not deserve being that high in the top 25… but college football needs the big named teams to get people to watch the games. I also want to see the smaller schools in some of these bowl games… Bowling green Idaho? That was a good game
Could have kicked a PAT to tie it and go to OT but the Idaho coach decided to go for 2 and the win.
"meh"
Yes, the decision paid off. It makes sense—go for 2, and you probably have a ~70% chance of making it; go for the tie, and you probably have a 50% chance of winning.
Sure. It’s a strategy to minimize the blame for when it fails. Honestly though, what’s the percent chance of converting on something like 4th and 2 or where you just need two yards—70%? That would suggest that going for the deuce is always the better play, given that 70% * 2 points = 1.4 points gained (on average), rather than ~ 100% * 1 point < 1.4 points.
Obviously the deuce is the higher variance play, but if I had to guess, it’s probably the right one (at least numbers wise).
remember
THE Ohio State University is one of the biggest in the country; that’s a lot of alumni pumped out every year. Plus, there’s no pro football teams in the state for anyone to follow (Merope will never find this comment buried here anyways).

Only Kevin Riley and most of the defense.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Dec 30, 2009 7:52 PM PST up reply actions
That’s not true at all. They weren’t a top 25 team this year, but they’ve deserved to be nationally ranked pretty much every year that Tedford has been here outside of this one. This year they lost a lot of people on defense and on the offensive line, and Kevin Riley played about 10% as well as anybody thought he was going to. If any of those areas improve, and they’re more than likely to improve, they’ll be in the top 25 again next year.
On top of which, Vereen really came of age this year, the receivers got a lot better over the course of the year, and as far as I know Best hasn’t decided to leave yet.
The future of the program is fairly bright.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

by non sequitur on Dec 30, 2009 8:40 PM PST up reply actions
I think that before this year he was on long-term radars, but he struggled to win the job last season from what can only be described as a damaged Nate Longshore, and then even accepting his struggles last year this was the year that he was should have started to fulfill his potential.
Unfortunately, he crumbled against virtually every quality opponent he faced and pretty much looked terrible outside of a few select moments. His QB rating at the end of the year? 128.7. Just shows how terrible that stat really is.
He definitely has the talent to succeed in college, and he has occasionally played up to it, but he’ll have to make pretty extreme strides next year to make it back onto anybody’s draft board.

by howtheyscored on Dec 30, 2009 9:07 PM PST up reply actions
i wish they’d do more wildcat plays, with both vereen and best. they really need to get the ball into their playmakers’ hands. the best thing is that there really us no dropoff from best to vereen
Top 25? oh NICE! I’m just trying to find a team they’ve played top 25 out of conference… i’m just wondering. I would hope that Best would stay an extra year since he didn’t have the opportunity to play a few games due to concussions
You act like non-conference schedules are typically grueling for good teams. Of the top five teams in the nation, only Alabama played a ranked non-conference opponent. I guess all of those teams really suck, too.
And off the top of my head, in the last few years Cal has played Tennessee more than once. So there’s at least one.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Dec 30, 2009 9:51 PM PST up reply actions
WIth Alabama though, they have SEC, so i mean, every team they play is just top 25… But see, with CAL, i just feel every year it’s some dumb bowl game, like the Pacific life holiday bowl… or the one they went to this year… I haven’t seen them play in a big bowl game in a while.
Almost half of the Pac-10 was in the top-25 this year, and more than half of the conference appeared in the top-25 at one point. In fact, The Pac-10 had more top-25 teams this year than the SEC did.
As far as Cal and bowl games goes, the fact that they haven’t made a major bowl isn’t really a valid knock against them. They’ve knocked on the Rose Bowl’s door a few times this decade, and they’ve come a hell of a long way from the absolute futility that were the Tom Holmoe years.
Also consider the fact that they still don’t have modern or adequate athletic facilities for the team, nor do they have the money or the clout of USC, and the program is really doing quite well.
I never said they were a top-10 team. They’ve probably only been a top-10 team once in the recent past. But a top-25 team? Oh yeah, they’ve been that.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Dec 30, 2009 10:02 PM PST up reply actions
Well, for some reason i don’t see CAL in a big bowl game, that is what i’m saying. But this is true considering the fact they have come a long way, i haven’t really followed the program much.
They do need a new stadium, or a renovate it.
They were a top 10 team a few times haven’t they? But what i think is disappointing is that i never see them in a big bowl game, is it the fact they cant finish? or what’s up with it
It’s more likely just the fact that there aren’t that many big bowl games, and that the one Cal has the best chance of ever getting to is the Rose Bowl. With USC in conference, it’s been very difficult for any Pac-10 team to make a Rose Bowl appearance just because lately (this year excluded), if USC isn’t in the National Championship, then they are in the Rose Bowl.
The other part is that they haven’t had consistent QB play since Aaron Rodgers. Ayoob was a disaster, Longshore looked like an absolute stud before he ripped his ankle into tiny little bits, and he never seemed to recover psychologically from that, and Riley ended up being a massive disappointment this year. Really, with the poor QB play the team has had since Rodgers, it really is a testament to the strength of the defense and the running game that they’ve been so highly ranked the last few years.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Dec 30, 2009 10:34 PM PST up reply actions
Got it… I mean, i am getting sick of the same thing ever year, it’s always USC in the rose bowl, but finally this year it’s Oregon… Cal just ends up in the same bowl, which is not a BCS bowl game like what the Rose Bowl is… but anyway, you’re basically talking to a guy that’s a Michigan fan, and boy, that’s a very bad situation with Rich Rod… plus a Bulldog fan… the Redhawks? they just flat out SUCK
I think the problem is that the pre-season polls consistently over rank Cal. Everyone should know that this team is not going to be good with Riley as the Quarterback, he just simply can’t get it done. He has not had one good game against a quality opponent.

Super non-credible rumor of the twitter world
Former Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre headed to NL West team. http://bit.ly/5ep76T #MLB #Rumors #freeagency #money #NL

The link has nothing to do with this rumor, so I consider this supreme unsubstantiated rumor of no linkage.

Interesting
On good terms, I wouldn’t mind Beltre, really. I’d rather have LaRoche, but whatever.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
As for why
His defense is awesome, and it pushes DeRosa to LF. He seems like a decent chance at an offensive rebound post-testicular-destruction, as well as the fact that he’d be moving to a more hitter-friendly park.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
Haha
The price tag does scare me, admittedly. But he’s not one of those guys who’s a bad idea at any cost (like Dye or Pods). Beltre would be good at some costs, at least.

Hey i don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but
Derosa wants to play shortstop?
The Associated Press reports San Francisco Giants IF Mark DeRosa cited pitching as a main reason why he signed a two-year contract with the organization. ‘That was one of the big overriding factors when I decided where wanted to play, the pitching factor,’ DeRosa said. ‘Pitching wins games.’ DeRosa also indicated a desire to play primarily at shortstop, although he said he is comfortable playing wherever asked.

That was a joke, I think. He’s played a little SS in the majors, but he’s well below average as a second baseman, so I’m pretty sure he’s an awful shortstop. He could play there in the type of situation where Pedro Feliz plays catcher and Noah Lowry is in RF.

Well, I usually consider third and fourth to be relatively interchangeable for “best hitter placement”. I don’t mind if somebody prefers having Sandoval bat third. It could very well be marginally better than having him bat fourth. But to be really distressed that he’s being asked to bat cleanup instead of third seems like a major overreaction to me.

Yes, Sandoval should be out third and fourth hitter… I was talking more generally about conventional wisdom.
I actually like him slightly better at third mainly for the extra at-bats and because I’d like him to have the attitude of ‘hit line drives all over the park’ rather than ‘hit it over the wall’, but it’s nothing I’d get worked up over, certainly…

5 mil a year for Byrd
is a pretty good deal
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

But he doesn’t need to be as good as he was for Texas to be worth $5 mil a year. That’s market value for, like, a barely over 1 WAR player. Arlington or not, I think he’s likely to be worth more than ~1.1 WAR a year.

I’m watching the MLBN countdown of the best games of 2009 and they show Dirty’s no hitter and then they go on to say that though Dirty was good Buehrle was perfect which I can see that a perfect game is better than a no hitter but how did his game NOT make the list? The story behind it and everything. Buehrle should be #1 but nooo the Yankees/Twins game is ahead…really?
That really really irritated me the yanks appeared 3 times on the same list.
Now batting catcher Buster Posey
my dream for 2010
How is a no hitter not one of the top games in 2009? Asswipes.

He pitched way better than Buehrle. he got 28 outs, and had more Ks I think, and Buehrle gave up freakin HR!

Defiintely had more Ks
It’s Mark Buehrle after all.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

C'mon
Be fair. This isn’t ESPN. MLB Network is tons more fair than the Yankees/Red Sox network. During the season, Yankees-Red Sox matchup ALWAYS led off Baseball Tonight/Sportscenter. MLB Network had other games ahead (even when MLB televised a Red Sox-Yankees game).
"meh"
So it was lumped in with all the other no hitters in 2009!
