The Phils signing Polanco sure seems to take them out of the Adrian Beltre race, eh?

SWOOP, Sabes, SWOOP.

Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

by Smoke on the Water on Dec 3, 2009 11:19 PM PST reply actions

Did you see the report that Beltre’s asking price is >$10mil/year? I have a feeling it was a phone call to Beltre’s agent that maybe took the Phils out of the Beltre race, and if that’s really their starting point for negotiations I’m not sure I want us to be in that race either.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Seattle offered Beltre arb. His salary last year was $12m. Also his agent is Scott Boras.

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

3yrs/18 seems pretty pricey for Polanco at his age.

You want to see a walk? Then go watch the mailman.

Especially when you are asking him to change positions.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

some people said the Ibanez signing was the worst of the offseason last year. That turned out pretty good for them. Hard to argue with the success the Phillies have had the last few years. I’d certainly rather have Polanco then Pedro Feliz, and it looks like Boras priced Beltre out of a natural fit there. I wouldn’t like the signing for the Giants, but on the Phillies he’ll be excellent at the bottom of their lineup.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

by rxmeister on Dec 4, 2009 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

Seems really stupid too given that Feliz was cheap and played just as good defense at 3rd. And the reason given for Polanco was that he strikes out less than Feliz, yet Feliz doesn’t K that much anymore oddly enough. Given the money it seems like a bad call for the Phils.

We traded Alderson for Garko

Yet Jake Fox could be had for 3 filler prospects. Fox is under team control for 4 yrs. 2 yrs before arbitration. Garko will make around 3 million in 2010.
Add in that Fox can play multiple positions (not great but maybe serviceable) at catcher, 1b, 3b, and the OF. Why wasnt Sabean attempting to get Fox?

by MagicMike23 on Dec 4, 2009 12:27 AM PST reply actions

Jake Fox is a terrible defender. He doesn’t play any position well. Thats part of the reason he is in the AL now, he will probably be mostly a DH or LF.

"We traded Alderson for Garko"

I guess all those Giants’ fans crying over losing Scott Barnes have forgotten about him already.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

“We traded Alderson for Garko” will go down in history like “We can put a man on the moon but…”

People will say this every time someone is traded.

WHY IS BOCOCK?!

by Lars The Wanderer on Dec 4, 2009 6:25 AM PST up reply actions

if we had traded Barnes for Albert Pujols, it still becomes a bad trade if Bochy never plays Pujols and the Giants’ cut him loose at the end of the season. Wherever Garko winds up next season, (assuming the Giants don’t offer him arbitration) would anybody by surprised if he has a better year than whoever they sign to play first base?

We traded Alderson for Garko Sanchez (the one who didn’t throw the no-no)

Royals may put Dejesus on the trade market? I’d be more than ok with having him at a corner OF spot and at the top of the lineup.

I always get irrationally worked up when I see somebody quote this, because there are so many people who only know it from Super Troopers.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

I’ve never seen Super Troopers. I thought everybody just quotes WW&tCF.

Zaun signs with Brewers, Figgins about to sign with the Mariners

Four years 36 million for Figgins. I think this signing will get the ball rolling.

Is it just my paying more attention, or has the ball gotten rolling faster this year than last?

Really curious as to how the Mariners think Figgins is a good idea for them. Seems like they’d benefit a lot more from trying to go after Bay or Holliday to add some dingerz to their lineup.

by Hobbes2d on Dec 4, 2009 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

the latest is that they’re not going to follow through if Beltre decides to accept arbitration on Monday. Pretty short sighted of them to offer Beltre arbitration if this is the case. Did they not know they wanted to sign Figgins last week?

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

by rxmeister on Dec 4, 2009 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

didn't seattle have the best defense in baseball last year?

if this is the philosophy there, i can see wht they wanted figgins.

by giantdonkey on Dec 4, 2009 10:16 PM PST up reply actions

Surely they can keep the defense intact without paying a huge amount. Seems to me they could have gone after Holliday with all that money and signed someone else to play 3rd could could still contribute a bit offensively and be a premium defender.

by Hobbes2d on Dec 4, 2009 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

lots of rumors

that seattle may still be in on bay.

by giantdonkey on Dec 4, 2009 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

Doubt it

Zduriencik knows what he’s doing up there, and he understands what UZR and +/- indicate about Bay’s defense.

because

every winning team need a plus defender in left field ?

by giantdonkey on Dec 5, 2009 1:07 AM PST up reply actions

Because

He knows that that knowledge is not so widely spread about the league and will thus inflate Bay’s cost above that which he would be willing to pay him.
