Thinking about 2010 in terms of 2011
MLBTR's list of 2011 free agents. It may be akin to taking off before the man with the starting gun even arrives at the race, but it does cast this year in a light that promotes patience. If the giants avoid taking on too much payroll from guys like Nick Johnson or anyone wanting multiyear deals, it puts them in a better position to pursue someone like Derrek Lee, . Perhaps there is something to Sabean's wait and see approach...

I’m interested to see how the Jose Reyes situation plays out.

I’ve always been in the pro MadBum for Reyes camp.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

This free-agent year feels more like an interlude where teams make the subtle adjustments they need to hit 2011 with fervor.
It’s starting to become more apparent that it’s not any given player that the giants need, but the right kind of contract. They just need to find the players that can fit the deals the giants have the ability to make.

Nick Johnson isn’t getting a multiyear deal. He is actually the antithesis of guys you are citing as players who would prevent us from signings in 2011.
Weird ‘example’.
