Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

The Giants would like to add offense and, as Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports point out, Pablo Sandoval and Freddy Sanchez are versatile enough to give GM Brian Sabean plenty of options. The FOX Sports duo reports that Adrian Beltre, Dan Uggla and Nick Johnson are all high on the team's wish list.

One source tells FOX Sports that the Giants and Marlins are in the midst of ongoing discussions about Uggla, a prime trade candidate. The Marlins are looking to obtain major league-ready players for the arbitration-eligible infielder. The Giants, not surprisingly, would only have interest in Johnson on a short-term deal.

The other person mentioned in the article of interest to the Giants is Beltre. None of these 3 are distasteful to me, though Beltre would cost a draft pick.

Beltre wouldn’t cost a draft pick he’s a type B free agent, the article is wrong in that regard.

Well if the Marlins are looking for major-league ready players then i don’t see us being a good fit as we have pretty much none of those. I like Uggla but i wouldn’t give up decent value for him and I’m still somewhat skeptical that they’ll give him up for next to nothing.

And Beltre, good player though he is, doesn’t really fall into the “adding offense” strategy in that he’s worse offensively than the player he’d replace in the lineup.

Obviously Nick Johnson would be a good acquisition and no team will give him more than two years so he’s unlikely to be an issue in that regard.

I think these three are a solid group. Its much better than a 3 year 18 million dollar Polanco

Really?

We have like 15 hundred AAAA outfielders who could all be described as Major league ready.

Hell, we could trade them Fred Lewis. He fits that definition.

True we do have a number of major league ready OF but are any of them going to be particularly appealing to the Marlins? I guess that comes down to the second point that I’m skeptical that they give him up without getting at least one intriguing piece.

All indications are that this could be way more of a salary dump type deal than you would expect given Uggla’s rep. They might take a package of C+/B- prospects for him.

It’s certainly more feasible as to his actual price but are the Marlins willing to accept that they held on to him too long?

I’d be interested in any of those three, though my preference would go

Johnson → Beltre → Uggla

I'm not sure why everyone is so high on Johnson

I’d rather have Ishikawa continue to develop at 1st, with his glove. Rather than get Johnson.

All things considered (team needs, available talent/demand), it seems to me like Johnson is the best fit.

go look at Johnson's OBP

only major issue is his health.

Yeah, and Nick Johnson has only OPSd 100+ points more than Ishikawa over their respective careers.

I'm still trying to figure out what we would do if we did acquire Uggla

Moving Sanchez to third would be kind of dumb since he doesn’t really have the arm or the bat to play there. Moving Uggla to third would be scary and I hope that’s not what they’re considering. The only other things I can think of is maybe they would move Uggla to first….but that would kill the value of his bat or they plan to move Sanchez to SS, which would be interesting, but seems a lot better than the other options.

by superk1ng on Dec 3, 2009 8:33 AM PST reply actions

Hm.

Sanchez’s career UZR/150 from 3b: 17.9

He’s quite good defensively at 3b.

Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.

by GiantPain on Dec 3, 2009 9:05 AM PST up reply actions

I doubt UZR takes arm strength into account. From what I can tell, it’s calculated from range and errors. If a runner beats his throw because his arm isn’t as strong, I don’t see any way this stat can reflect that, as the play would be recorded as an infield hit.

by capnk on Dec 3, 2009 9:28 AM PST up reply actions

his abilty to turn balls hit into his zone into outs is his “range”. In that respect, his arm does factor into his range.

Good to know. Admittedly, I’m unclear on how many advanced metrics are calculated.

How confident do those numbers make you, though? On average 2B = 3B, and we’re not looking at a huge sample size with Sanche’z career at 3B….

Two reason this makes me happy:

  1. No Dye/Damon/Random OF with a ring mentioned
  2. It shows that the FO is thinking semi creatively and realizes that they can move the IF around a little

Quick poll: Does anyone here think that Sanchez would have worse range than Renteria? Serious question, no snark.

by Grant Brisbee on Dec 3, 2009 9:33 AM PST reply actions

Renteria’s $18M says he has more range.

by Missing Barry on Dec 3, 2009 10:18 AM PST up reply actions

no. I know everybody says the knee surgery is no big deal, but I would want to see him move laterally before I would base any 2010 decisions on that, though.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

by oldjacket on Dec 3, 2009 10:18 AM PST up reply actions

I'm going with no, but

does Renteria get the edge here since he has more experience at the position and may be able to judge hitters/players more effectively? Or is that BS?

Then again, I don’t know much about range/defensive metrics, so who knows why I’m even replying.

by sakbaum on Dec 3, 2009 9:47 AM PST reply actions

I don’t think that’s BS. We all saw what positioning and hitter knowledge did for BLB despite his deteriorating foot speed.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

by oldjacket on Dec 3, 2009 10:20 AM PST up reply actions

Was it positioning and hitter knowledge as much as reading the ball well, taking a good route, and gettig a good first step?

by Missing Barry on Dec 3, 2009 11:17 AM PST up reply actions

Supposedly he was pretty phenomenal as far as knowing hitter tendencies, but yeah, all that stuff was pretty true too.
