Which Giants Players Will Have Breakout Season in 2010?
The instructionals have come to an end. Winter ball is winding down. The Community List is raging. Sabean continues to kick tire.
Last season there was the 2009 Breakout Candidate fanpost. By the way where is Waldo Sadler?
This season wanted to have a breakout SF Giants player, a breakout prospect and an organization changing player.
An organization changing player is a player who can change the course of the organization based on their good/poor performance. A player if he/she performs well the Giants will not have to go outside the organization to find a suitable replacement. A player if he/she performs poorly the Giants will no longer count on and will need to replace. Those that had Angel Villalona step forward to receive your prize.
- Giants Player: John Bowker
- Prospect: Matt Graham
- Organization Changing Prospect: Brandon Crawford. If the professor explodes at AAA and becomes a top prospect, the Giants will have a quality SS and top of the order bat for many seasons to come.

By the end of 2010, people will be talking about Neal like they do now about Posey (as in, opening day starter). I’ll stake money on it.

Player: Kevin Frandsen
Prospect: Clayton Tanner
Org Changing prospect: Francisco Peguero
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
Who?
"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
Clayton Tanner is a young left handed starting pitcher, who repeated San Jose last year & Francisco Peguero is a 21 yr old CF who has a lot of tools but can’t take walks.
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
Am I reading the question correctly?
A player if he/she performs well the Giants will not have to go outside the organization to find a suitable replacement. A player if he/she performs poorly the Giants will no longer count on and will need to replace.
I didn’t know the Giants had any female players in the organization, although several of their major leaguers do swing like a girl. I’m not being sexist… on some of the softball teams I’ve played on that would actually be a compliment. But that doesn’t cut it in the major leagues.
That said...
1. Big league player: Nate Schierholtz
2. Prospect: Rafael Rodriguez
3. Organization Changing Prospect: Buster Posey. Still considered a prospect/rookie. A huge amount of hope is tied to him. If he becomes a star as predicted, he could very well lead the Giants to the Promised Land. If he busts, it will be a devastating blow to the organization.

Intresting choice on Posey.
I am so use to the Giants marching out hot or cold dreck at catcher for decades that I look at “meh” Posey as an over all win though I think most fans would consider that a bust. Still nice to think on something positive regaurding the Giants.

I think Neal has to be the most important prospect in the org this year – if he busts through AA the way he did high-A and makes it to the majors by the end of the year to go along with Buster and Pablo, all of a sudden the heart of the order looks a lot better.
I agree with Bowker for category #1 and I’m hoping for Tommy Joseph for #2.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
Neal
Important until his first 50 MLB ABs are shitty, coincidentally with a .100 BABIP, and he is forever relegated as “not able to hit in the majors because he hasn’t hit in the majors”.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Going out on a limb here:
Joe Martinez – could be a valuable swingman, especially if MadBum starts year in minors
Chris Gloor – can never have enough big lefthanders in your system
Nick Noonan – finally lives up to promise and becomes top twenty prospect

Man, I can’t believe Molina didn’t get those 50 steals I predicted.
Anyway, Burriss is my breakout candidate. He’ll hit 63 homers.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.
1. Sanchez – loses 1 walk per 9, becomes a lights out 6 inning starter.
2. Noonan – finally starts to hit
3. Neal, duh.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
This team, I fear, will regress
Good surprise: Freddie S.
Sorta good: Buster
Lotsa bad: Jonathan S.
Gone by mid-season: Bowker, Eugenio
Comin’: Neal
Already gone: FreddieLew
Don't believe everything you think.
1a. MATT CAIN – more wins and will hit more home runs than Renteria
1b. Waldis Joaquin – I like his stuff, if he could sharpen his command/control and develop a changeup, he could be a real force in the bullpen and even spot start. I would have chosen Bowker/Nate but I don’t see the Giants giving them much of a shot as Bochy will only play whoever’s hot rather than letting them progress.
2. Chris Dominguez – DINGERZ! Cut down on the strikeouts and we might see a late season callup.
3. Tommy Joseph – If he hits the way we all think he can, he could really be an organizational changing prospect b/c he would either move Posey to third or short if he plays catcher, or move Sandoval back to third if he plays first base.
No, that's not how it's done
The point of something like this is to pick something really unlikely but not totally impossible, so that in the event that you get very lucky, you look like a genius.
1. Barry Zito. Goes 22-5, 3.70 and wins the Cy Young over a vastly more deserving Tim Lincecum, as Keith Law won’t be voting on the NL Cy in 2010.
2. Garret Broshuis. Is forced by carpal tunnel syndrome to learn the knuckleball and becomes the second coming of Hoyt Wilhelm, destroying AA and AAA and earning a 40-man roster spot and September callup.
3. Zach Wheeler. Hops aboard the Runzler Train and visits four minor league levels, striking out 11 per 9 overall.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Good call
…but not sufficiently out there, imho. If you really want to go there:
1. Eli Whiteside: commands the pitching staff with authority, settles Sanchez into a dominant starter, and coaxes every ounce of skill out of Romo, Hinshaw, Runzler, et al. His 30 homers and 77 ribbies (all in clutch situations) make us forget the name of that other guy that played catcher the last 2 years. And, with his emergence, Buster Posey is reassigned to 2B, where the lesser defensive demands allow his power-hitting to blossom. We are set for a decade at two positions with this one development. And Chase Utley is no longer the NL 2B All-Star.
2. Chris Dominguez: controls the strike zone like a stat nerd’s wet dream, zooms all the way to AA in 2010, and becomes a fan favorite in Richmond. Public support of the Flying Squirrels becomes such a phenomenon that the city fathers are forced to agree on development plans for a new ballpark in downtown Richmond, providing the Giants a stable AA environment for the first time in decades, as Richmond, VA becomes the East Coast Outpost for Giants fandom stuck on the wrong coast. Xanthan, Roger, & Sgt. Dingleberry organize monthly meetings of eastern MCC’ers in Richmond, sales of Flying Squirrel gear lead the minors, and traffic on MCC doubles as Grant rakes in the cash, hand over fist.
3. Adam Laroche changes the organization fundamentally. His free agent signing, for too many years and at too high a salary, followed by his disastrous 2010 season becomes the straw that breaks the camel’s back, and Mr. Neukom finally understands that it is time for Brian Sabean to ply his trade elsewhere. Fans rejoice in the streets, and his replacement ushers in a decade of organizational strength and competence unseen in San Francisco since the team moved there. The new GM keeps Bochy around for 2011, then in a stunning announcement on Dec. 24, 2011, announces that Andy Skeels has been hired to be the new Giants manager.

Giants Player: Renteria… I mean, he can’t be that bad again right?
Prospect: Jarvis… sticking with my bro, I still believe.
Org Changing Player: Posey… seriously if he struggles next year (regardless of his level), a lot of people are going to be freaking the EFF out.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis. To pass the time during the offseason I decided to try my hand at blogging about photography and music.
1. Buster Posey- Will struggle initially but starts hitting and showing competence calling games by June.
2. Brett Pill- Will mash PCL pitching next year.
3. Madison Bumgardner- Will have a solid ’10 season en route to becoming a top of the rotation guy and making our starting staff in ’11 one for the ages.
P.S. Schierholtz is definitely not walking in the VWL. I’m disappointed that he’s not using his time to address a weakness. He’s hitting well, .324 (albeit punchless), like he has in the minor leagues which only serves to further delude him into believing that patience is not a baseball virtue. Sigh.
I'm pretty much with Wilriv
1. John Bowker – If this is correct, there will be much less pressure to make a stupid trade or signing for a FA hitter.
2. Eric Surkamp – Will establish himself as the 3rd best SP in the system
3. Brandon Crawford – for the same reasons mentioned by Wilriv. If Crawford excels, the Giants don’t make a stupid trade for a SS. The bar for his offense is set pretty low, so i’m hopeful on this one.
Proud adoptive daddy for the Big Unit, who is currently teaching Madison Bumgarner the art of being intimidating.
Madison Bumgarner
Jose Casilla and Tommy Joseph
Buster Posey — if I’m reading the criteria right, seems like Buster’s the only choice. No other player in the system has as much riding on his promise as Posey does.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
OK, I'll play
I actually like Wil’s choices, but just to offer some other suggestions:
1. Major league breakout player: I agree with John Bowker – if he blossoms, our need for Teh Dingerz lessens and we should be less likely to make stupid free agent acquisitions this time next year. On the other hand, if Jonathan Sanchez really blossoms in 2010, and we have a super-solid Big Three in the rotation, that would alleviate any pressure to rush MadBum, Surkamp, Tanner, or whomever.
2. Breakout prospect: Graham dominating would certainly recast the entire organization’s pitching depth. For that same reason, I’ll take Zach Wheeler. Sure he’s a high draft pick, and we hope he eventually shows us that promised talent. But if he takes off in his first year, that too would put the minor league pitching strength in a new light.
3. Organization-changing prospect: hard to argue with Brandon Crawford. If the Giants develop ANY hitter, it changes the organization. And if that player is a good SS who hits well, it’s even better. One possible alternate, mentioned elsewhere: Tommy Joseph. I’m assuming he’s a 1B, and if we had an actual slugging firstbaseman in our minor leagues, that too would change the perspective of our minor league hitting stockpile.
Overall, this ignores the likely big impacts of Buster Posey in the majors, and Thomas Neal in the minors, both of which are vital to the organization’s gradual recovery.

Sanchez in entrenched in the rotation. I think the rushing of Madbum or annyone else will have more to do with whether anyone else emerges as a viable 5th starter.
"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.
Just to beat adead horse farther and annoy the Cult of Dingerz more.
That $12M spend on DeRosa on Fred Sanchez would get the 2010 team a pretty exciting #5 starter of two.

Player on the 25 man: Bowker. Though I think Martinez has a better chance because I doubt Bork will give any of the Ex Grizzlies Out Fielders the constant play time let it happen.
Prospect: A few weeks ago I would be arguing with myself between Pill & Neal. Now with the addition of 2 veteran Utility/Second basemen so now I will say Madison. A full healthy and good season form him opens up a lot of possible options for the Giants in 2011-2014. Yes, I am hopeing they do not do a Burriss starting at 2nd base move to him but instead give him the minor league time to master his secondary stuff on the farm.
System changer: I will go Crawford here. Even if his bat shows to be "meh" when (if) he jumps levels and his glove work stays good life just got a lot easy for Giants pitchers and future Giants teams. But he needs to be conquering AA pitching and do something in AAA. For a guy that seems to be a "slow starter" when he jumps that would be a big event if he did it this season
Wil this is a great idea. This should be an off season that excites us. For the first times in years there are many position players under team control either in the 25 man or in the upper minors this spring. Too bad we are getting the cold 2 day old oatmeal porridge that is DeRosa, Pods & etc. instead. This is the rosterbation we should be having this winter.

2. Hector Sanchez I guess breakout means doing real good while moving to a bigger stage.
3. Neal.
If I was rating pitchers, maybe Runzler, Surkamp, MadBum.

1. Madison Bumgarner (fastball returns to previous MPH and he dominates as a rookie like Fernando in 81, Blue in 71, Gooden in 84 etc)
2. Nick Noonan. Really easy for me to pick Neal or Kieschnick or Joseph etc. But I think Noonan’s new-found plate discipline will carry over into next year at AA and he’ll break out into a legitimate top of the order bat at 2nd base.
3. Can’t go wrong with a lot of guys here. There’s big time arm guys like Graham, Wheeler, Surkamp, King, Nicholson, Tanner, Stoffel, the Bucardos, Gloor etc. And you also can’t go wrong with some of the young positional prospects like Peguero, Neal, Kieschnick, Posey, Crawford, Joseph or even Dominguez or Biery, but I think a guy who could truly help the organization a bunch by developing is Conor Gillaspie. If Gillaspie is able to improve his defense at 3rd and start raking in AA and hit for some power I don’t think it would take him very long to get back to the big leagues. Not only does he have legit plate discipline, but I still believe he has the bat, and athleticism to make an impact at a variety of positions in the ML’s depending on where he ultimately ends up fitting at best. 3rd, 2nd, or LF…if he can make a huge leap in development that’s one more legitimate hitter we can have joining Posey and Pablo in the big leagues.
1. Juan Uribe – I don’t know if he qualifies, but the guy hits the ball very hard, and I’d love to see him push Renteria to the beeonch.
2. Mad Bum – Kid is gonna blow people away.
3. Neal.
by Great Success! on Dec 30, 2009 10:48 PM PST reply actions
1. Jonathan Sanchez. Always been a big Sanchez fan; the guy has great stuff, and he showed he’s learning control. He’ll keep his BB/9 down for the first time this year, allowing him to progress deeper into games and be one of the top #4’s in the game. Sub-4.00 ERA, 150+ K’s, barring injury.
2. Hector Sanchez. Promising SSS stats turn into promising LSS stats, allowing the organization to mull over moving Posey or trade a valuable catching prospect for a valuable ML hitter when we’re in contention at the deadline.
3. Freddie Sanchez, because people named Sanchez are better. Zack Wheeler. Third potential #1 starter in four years allows the team to be confident they won’t have to sign an FA pitcher, freeing up dollars for a long-term Tim Lincecum deal. Lincecum, Bumgarner, Cain, Wheeler, and Sanchez consequently become one of the best starting staffs in decades, propelling the Giants to several postseason berths (helped along by the considerably above-average production of Sandoval, Posey, and Neal).
