Shite
To understand the slightly paradoxical difference note that the word “shite” is usually said in a grimmer and lower tone than the word “shit”, which is sharper to say. You can really tear into the word “shite” when you’re using it as an insult as in the second example, the word “shit” ends more suddenly. However generally “shite” is not as offensive to say as “shit”.

Maybe I'm sipping the kool-aid, but...
I’m still a believer that Sabean HAS to over pay for guys come to SF for a few reasons…
One, he knows and everyone else in baseball knows that the Giants absolutely have to do something this offseason and upgrade the offense.
All agents know this, so should be able to raise the price because of this.
Our ballpark hasn’t been favorable to hitters, so players may need more money to come here.
The rest of the offense is bad, and a hitters numbers can drop because of his surrounding cast, so again the player needs more money to come here.
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
But could he overpay for good players that we need on the roster?
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
like who? Again, at the end of the day players have to want to play for SF too. cough Nick Johnson cough cough
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
We already had DeRosa on the team a month ago. Then we cut him. He was calling himself Gark-something or other.
I would overpay for Holliday.

He’s below average at pretty much every infield position but first.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

-6.5 at third base. WTF! A fat Pablo last year was at -6.4.
/throws self down flight of stairs
"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
doesn’t explain signing DeRosa to a 2 year deal for more than it wouldve cost to bring back Garko.
Thing A
in a vacuu I could see how maybe you could be split. But would you pay 1-3 mil MORE for DeRosa AND give him and extra year knowing he’s 5 years older than Garko? Bill James and CHONE both project a much better offensive year from Garko anyway
Thing A
But we have to overpay to get them to come here, you said that yourself, and with Garko we would have an extra 1-3 million to sign them with.
We do not have as much payroll to attract better players.
82 WINZ!

I like that he is at least somewhat versatile with his glove. The Giants are hellbent on Panda moving to 1b and Garko can’t play 3rd.

Justification? I am not sure I get this impression.

…ok. Thanks for that justification.

of course, Rotoworld’s commentary has been debated, but they at least agree from today’s blurb about DeRosa to SF
DeRosa would step into a full-time gig, likely at third base, with Pablo Sandoval making the switch across the diamond to first base, where he’ll be less of a defensive liability long-term.
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
Is that a commenter, or is that from the Giants organization?

I’d want both if it meant the following configuration:
LF DeRosa, 3B Pablo, 1B Garko, Velez jettisoned into a black hole.

sure
and the semi-realistic possibility that DeRosa posts an .800 OPS season as our regular LF with another .800+ OPS type signed to play 1B is the reason I’m not completely against this signing…..but it doesn’t look so great right now.

He still has the job
Here in lies the problem. He created this situation and was rewarded for it with an extension. So why change what he was doing?
This FO gives me a :(
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
Not something I can answer. He did create this mess, but bringing in a new GM for this year wouldn’t necessarily solve this.
Of course, it could lead to better things for future seasons, but I feel like with our farm system now, we might at least be on a better track now
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
You do not reward someone for doing a shitty job by giving them an extension. And if the owners tried to justify it with “Bringing in a new GM won’t help us” I would go ape shit.
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
Didn’t mean for this to be a Sabean debate, but I’m still of the lets wait and see approach for 2010 after the success we had in 2009
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
I am in the camp that we had accidental success in 2009. Our pitchers were awesome and put up some ridiculous numbers and our bullpen especially was tight.
We really cannot rely on that year in and out. Especially if we are not improving the offense, just shuffling around the mediocrity will not work.
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
While it might not be a championship squad yet, lets at least not forget that the rest of the West isn’t doing anything either.
This doesn’t mean its right for the Giants to do what they are doing this offseason, but if our pitching holds then we can make it into the playoffs. I really just don’t think its as easy to bring in offense to our team that some people think
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
The Dodgers still have a good young offense. Granted their pitching stinks, but they can still mash.
The Dbacks scare me. Their hitters are good, pure young talent and if Webb is healthy they have a great 1-2 rotation.
Our pitching is good, but we are in no way a lock to win the West next year.
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
I realize you did not say they were a lock. But I just want to emphasize that we can not just rely on our pitching only.
I did not even mention the Rockies, who seem relatively unchanged from this last season.
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
Also
The fact that the rest of the division appear to be doing nothing is even more reason to go out and make your team better. It is not a reason to stand pat.

The Dodgers, of course
had a team OPS+ of 104 last year versus an ERA+ of 116.
I don’t know where the meme that the Dodgers pitching stinks came from, but it’s really not accurate. They did lose Wolf this offseason, but they’ve got a pretty good pitching staff regardless.

"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
I really can’t understand how the Dodgers pitching was so good last season and how it held up. I really think it will drop off this year
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
It probably will (loss of Wolf, general bullpen regression), but the Giants’ pitching probably will (at least somewhat) as well.

It’s also possible (and imo likely) that Billingsley & Kershaw could improve on last year.
"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
I’d be surprised if Billingsley doesn’t do a lot better next year than he did this year.

"AT LAST I AM A PARENTS." - Buster
I was looking at his 2009 #‘s. Everything looks similar to 2008 except for ERA. His walks increased & strikeouts decreased, but both slightly. I though his 3.14 ERA in 2008 was lucky just as his 4.03 in 2009 was unlucky. He’s probably somewhere in the middle.
Of course he’s only 25 years old so he can still improve.

I really just don’t think its as easy to bring in offense to our team that some people think
Then don’t! But at least keep and play the right guys. Like I mentioned above a team with Lewis and Garko playing regularly is at least as good as a team with DeRosa at 3B and some other Sabean favorite (Dye, Velez, Byrd, or even Damon) in the OF and its also a whole lot cheaper. Its not the route I’d like to see the team go but its better than their current strategy. I don’t completely hate the DeRosa signing but its pretty confusing considering the moves they’ve already made.

Rosenthal says DeRosa would fill a third base/super-utility role. He reminds us that the Giants are also close to re-signing Juan Uribe, which would make for a “very versatile roster” and would push Pablo Sandoval to first base.
Ok now I hate it.
If DeRosa and Uribe end up being it for the offseason, I am predicting a sub.500 season.

I wouldn’t mind having DeRosa to play a utility role for the Giants, but he’s going to start at 3rd base. Our open corner infield position has been filled in with a sub-par hitter in 2009. If he somehow goes back to hitting like he did in 2006-2008 than great, but he’s 35 years old now. It’s not bloody likely.
"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
Where he plays will depend...
on what happens in spring training. I think we’re all writing off Ishikawa too early. If he has a good spring and wins the job, then DeRosa can move to LF. If not, then he can play third. A right handed hitter that can play several positions is not a bad thing to have on this roster.
