Shite

To understand the slightly paradoxical difference note that the word “shite” is usually said in a grimmer and lower tone than the word “shit”, which is sharper to say. You can really tear into the word “shite” when you’re using it as an insult as in the second example, the word “shit” ends more suddenly. However generally “shite” is not as offensive to say as “shit”.

Maybe I'm sipping the kool-aid, but...

I’m still a believer that Sabean HAS to over pay for guys come to SF for a few reasons…

One, he knows and everyone else in baseball knows that the Giants absolutely have to do something this offseason and upgrade the offense.

All agents know this, so should be able to raise the price because of this.

Our ballpark hasn’t been favorable to hitters, so players may need more money to come here.

The rest of the offense is bad, and a hitters numbers can drop because of his surrounding cast, so again the player needs more money to come here.

of course, Rotoworld’s commentary has been debated, but they at least agree from today’s blurb about DeRosa to SF

DeRosa would step into a full-time gig, likely at third base, with Pablo Sandoval making the switch across the diamond to first base, where he’ll be less of a defensive liability long-term.

I am in the camp that we had accidental success in 2009. Our pitchers were awesome and put up some ridiculous numbers and our bullpen especially was tight.

We really cannot rely on that year in and out. Especially if we are not improving the offense, just shuffling around the mediocrity will not work.

by scout6 on Dec 28, 2009 11:55 AM PST up reply actions

While it might not be a championship squad yet, lets at least not forget that the rest of the West isn’t doing anything either.

This doesn’t mean its right for the Giants to do what they are doing this offseason, but if our pitching holds then we can make it into the playoffs. I really just don’t think its as easy to bring in offense to our team that some people think

YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL

by heimy25 on Dec 28, 2009 11:58 AM PST up reply actions

The Dodgers still have a good young offense. Granted their pitching stinks, but they can still mash.

The Dbacks scare me. Their hitters are good, pure young talent and if Webb is healthy they have a great 1-2 rotation.

Our pitching is good, but we are in no way a lock to win the West next year.

I don’t know where the meme that the Dodgers pitching stinks came from, but it’s really not accurate. They did lose Wolf this offseason, but they’ve got a pretty good pitching staff regardless.

I was looking at his 2009 #‘s. Everything looks similar to 2008 except for ERA. His walks increased & strikeouts decreased, but both slightly. I though his 3.14 ERA in 2008 was lucky just as his 4.03 in 2009 was unlucky. He’s probably somewhere in the middle.

Of course he’s only 25 years old so he can still improve.

I really just don’t think its as easy to bring in offense to our team that some people think

Then don’t! But at least keep and play the right guys. Like I mentioned above a team with Lewis and Garko playing regularly is at least as good as a team with DeRosa at 3B and some other Sabean favorite (Dye, Velez, Byrd, or even Damon) in the OF and its also a whole lot cheaper. Its not the route I’d like to see the team go but its better than their current strategy. I don’t completely hate the DeRosa signing but its pretty confusing considering the moves they’ve already made.

Rosenthal says DeRosa would fill a third base/super-utility role. He reminds us that the Giants are also close to re-signing Juan Uribe, which would make for a “very versatile roster” and would push Pablo Sandoval to first base.

Ok now I hate it.

He probably fits a lot better on a Yankees team that really only needs supporting pieces moreso than a Giants team that needs someone who is more of an impact player.

Also a Yankees team with the payroll room that renders $6 mil/year to Mark Derosa as hardly anything to worry about, versus a Giants team where that takes up a good chunk of the budget for this year.

This means our new #3 or #5 hitter could probably hit 8th or 9th and probably play a LF/Util role for them. Great.

DeRosa is actually a decent player. It’s the cost and what our other options could have been is what’s upsetting me.

"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."

by ResDog on Dec 28, 2009 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn’t mind having DeRosa to play a utility role for the Giants, but he’s going to start at 3rd base. Our open corner infield position has been filled in with a sub-par hitter in 2009. If he somehow goes back to hitting like he did in 2006-2008 than great, but he’s 35 years old now. It’s not bloody likely.

"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."

by ResDog on Dec 28, 2009 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

Where he plays will depend...

on what happens in spring training. I think we’re all writing off Ishikawa too early. If he has a good spring and wins the job, then DeRosa can move to LF. If not, then he can play third. A right handed hitter that can play several positions is not a bad thing to have on this roster.

by crazedcrustacean on Dec 28, 2009 12:44 PM PST up reply actions

a 35 year old right handed hitter who can play a bunch of positions coming off a .752 OPS year is not totally horrible. A 35 year old coming off a .752 OPS year signed for two years and a significant portion of the team’s payroll to be the regular third baseman is pretty bad though.
