The Preemptive I Hate The Mark DeRosa Signing Fanpost
A .314 OBP last year? Let's play him in a corner outfield spot! Yes, I know he was better the year before and after Edgar Renteria's All-Star campaign last season it's clear that 34-year-olds usually rebound after a bad season. Seriously, this move is so Brian Sabean I'm amazed it hasn't happened already.
Not confirmed or anything but hey, if it happens I win for getting the thread out early and if it doesn't happen I win by not having to watch Mark DeRosa.

The fact that a particular individual hits better than, say, Renteria or Rowand does not mean that the Ginats should be carpet-bombing them with bundles of million dollar bills.
If it means they don’t have money to re-sign Molina, however, I’m all for it.

sad that it comes to that
sort of “I want Mark DeRosa because if he doesn’t sign him, he’s going to sign someone worse.” I actually like Mark DeRosa, but’s he simply not the big bat that’s going to turn around this thing. It’s only a good move if Jason Bay or Matt Holliday are coming with him. Also, what I don’t like even though if it’s an individual award thing, is if you move Panda to first base, you’re probably costing him several all star appearances. David Wright and Ryan Zimmerman are his only competitors at third base, but at first you get Pujols, Howard, Lee, Berkman, Votto, and every other future big bat that stinks in the field.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
I want Mark DeRosa because if he doesn’t sign him, he’s going to play Eugenio Velez 130 games in LF and leadoff.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
Seriously, I think people are underestimating the possibility that Mark DeRosa might actually be a worse everyday left fielder than Eugenio.
Plus starting Eugenio possibly hastens the inevitable beginning of the Thomas Neal era!
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
I haven't read anyone here who shares my opinion on the matter...
But I am looking forward to Eugenio (Vanomper) Velez getting the majority of the starts in LF against righties. He’s got speed, a .445 slg against them, and I expect him to improve on his .325 OBP last year. The guy is awesome fast and has an awesome middle name, and I am looking forward to seeing him platoon with Torres.

I’d be fine with either platooning with Torres.
on an unrelated not, it appears Carlos Delgado has suffered a setback and hasn’t yet played in Winter ball, so unfortunately he may not be a 1B option for the team anymore. At this point i’d want either laroche or derosa, and it appears derosa would be a cheaper option

Yea, for sure, i wouldn’t want somebody like Delgado… Torres seemed pretty good last year, defensively and somewhat good at the plate… But there’s something about Lewis i like more than Velez.
a .445 slg against them,
.432 for his career. And he has a nice, shiny .312 OBP against righties to go along with it!.
Also, that’s pretty bad for a corner outfielder. Check out the SLG among qualifying left fielders last year:
1) Raul Ibanez .552
2) Ryan Braun .551
3) Jason Bay .537
4) Matt Holliday .515
5) Hideki Matsui .509
6) Johnny Damon .489
6) Carlos Lee .489
8) Juan Rivera .478
9) Chris Coghlan .460
10) Carl Crawford .452
11) David DeJesus .434
12) Alfonso Soriano .423
13) Scott Podsednik .412
14) Garrett Anderson .401
15) Chase Headley .392
At .432, Velez would rank 12th of 15. Even going from last year’s .445, he’d be own in 11th place. Whoo?
By the way, here are the career lines of two players against righties:
.286 / .362 / .443
.278 / .312 / .432
So, uh, which guy do you think is better?
(hint: one of these guys is Eugenio – the other is The Problem)

Velez does not have speed
In any sense related to scoring runs in baseball. He’s lousy at stealing bases, doesn’t get many infield hits, and isn’t even particularly good at taking extra bases on hits. He just takes way too long to get going.
Yeah cuz his swing causes him to just stare at the ball for a second before he turns around and runs =/

I’m coming around to the idea that throwing Velez out there for free might be a better idea than wasting money on any of the available guys in a multi year deal. I’d much rather have Lewis out there, but I’d really rather have Velez than DeRosa on a 3 year deal and I haven’t decided if I think a 2 year deal for DeRosa seems like a better plan or not.

Even if Velez is assigned the leadoff spot, he’s not guaranteed anything, because he’s too young. Sabean and Bochy will cool off from him by the time he’s hitting .238/.277/.377. The experiment will be over within a couple months. Which, while a couple months too long, will still be better than guaranteeding a gamey vet 150 games to prove he’s not worth a starting role, a la Randy Winn, 2009.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
I should say, he’s too cheap to be guaranteed a starting job. Soon as they’re paying him $5 mil a year, THEN Velez would be guaranteed a job.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
The biggest single thing about this choice is just how badly it smacks of starting the season with Burriss at 2nd instead of Frandsan.
Niether of those two should make fan jump for jump but it was obvious Frandsan was much more polished and ready for the MLB gig. So Bork! & the Sabean go for the guy least ready to succeed and most likely to fail in the short term. What end of July cluster Fuggen’ will those two idiots do so "solve" this problem this year?

They should just make the Yankees and Red Sox their own Division.
Since they are the only teams in baseball according to ESPN, they can just battle it out in alternating weekend series all year long.
They could show the games on Fox, ESPN, NESN, and the YES networks. No one else would have to listen to Joe Suck and Tim McStupid.
Then the winner has to go to the Dominican, Japan, and PR to play in a true world series. The rest of the MLB teams get to play in the US version.

can play pretty much any position in the field
He plays the field poorly, at least at second or third (~ -6 UZR), his most likely infield positions. He’s about as bad as Pablo at third, and I’d guess Pablo will improve, which is not in the cards for Derosa.
“as bad as Pablo at third”? was Pablo even really that bad at 3rd? I would be ok with him playing wherever, hell, short stop would be great
Pablo had a -6 UZR at third last season. That’s bad, worse than all but a handful of reasonably regular third basemen. (This is the crux of the argument in favor of signing Adrian Beltre, BTW.)
The “qualified” third basemen worse than Pablo according to UZR is an interesting list: Chipper Jones, Michael Young, Alex Rodriguez, David Wright.

I was on a retreat and I heard he said that and I was pissed because isn’t that his job to help the team, even if he has to work… A wonder what its like having a competent GM
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
I don't think it's the work that really bother him.
I think he just doesn’t like dealing with unknowns in the payroll. If he isn’t sure how much a guy is going to get in arbitration (and there’s never a way to be 100%), then he’s got to leave payroll open for the worst case scenario. Even if the team ends up winning all its arbitration cases, there won’t be anyone around worth spending the money on by the time the rulings come down; so it’s really a no-win situation
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
Fair point
but guys like Molina & Howry could’ve been useful to the team and that could’ve saved him (and us) some headaches instead of being forced to sign guys like Miguel Olivo or relying on a bunch of young arms (like Joaquin & Runzler) for a whole year. But him saying he didn’t want to deal with another arb case left a bad taste in my mouth.
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
I think it is highly debatable that Molina & Howry in 2010 ( both or a package) is upgrade over presant in house options.
In Howry’s case we run into the fact Sabean seems to have understood for years. Non Elite pitchers tend to dicey and fungible to you are better off going with the cheaper arm with better “stuff”. Now if he and Bork would just apply that logic to the position player side of the 25 man we might actually get somewhere above the 80’s in win totals.

by daveinexile on Dec 27, 2009 11:59 AM PST up reply actions
Let me rephrase
I thought Posey should’ve been the everyday catcher from the day he was brought up-I don’t care that he doesn’t know the pitchers. As for Howry- we can never have too many bullpen arms and if Joaquin & Runzler (and others) do well enough then we could ship him or someone else off to another team.
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
In all fairness though, the deal is probably less than what he would have made in arbitration and thus he probably would have preferred to pitch in AT&T and behind the starting rotation that ate up the most inning in the NL. He would have been overpaid pitching for us.
While the pick would have been nice, middle relief is not where we need to spend the money this off season.

"great bullpen"
When half the bullpen is rookie/1st yr type its hard to predict.
We are hoping Affeldt repeats his season
Romo struggled a for a decent stretch.
Whether they had flukish seasons or not medders/miller/howry not in the bullpen means lots of appearances will be need to be picked up by other relievers.
Umm...
Romo was pretty lights out dude. He allowed 40% of his runs for the season in two games (@ PIT & ATL). That wasn’t a decent stretch. It was a brief blip on the radar letting everyone know he is human.
Joaquin and Runzler will have a lot of proving to do, no doubt. But they should get plenty of lower stress (relatively) innings because Romo, Affeldt and Wilson will eat up all the high stress innings.
We just traded who for who?!
I was at one of those PIT games
Matt Cain pitched a beauty, but no Giant got a hit until Matt doubled off the CF wall. We finally got him some runs and got the lead, then Romo (my son!) came up and got out nobody. Wilson had to do a 1+ inning save. I was so disappointed to finally see Sergio in person and have it go so poorly.
