Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Bottom bullet point.

I dont know. What does everyone think? He had a pretty bad 2009, but had been solid up until that point. He may have just been a product the Phillies small ballpark, or maybe he just couldnt get into the rhythm of DHing. Some players cant.

Dont know how he is range wise in the OF, but he couldnt be much worse then Uggla people have been saying might move to the outfield if traded.
His stats are pretty similar to Ugglas too, and any team wouldnt have to give up nearly as much for Burrell.

I dont know. I guess if TB is paying some of the 9 mill hes due next season, and we arent giving up a whole lot, im willing to take a chance on him returning to his career line in 2010.

If we can’t spring Upton how about the Rays pick up at least $3M. The Bowker or Neal explodes in 2011

If the Rays pick up about 3 mil and send take something like Lewis+Frandsen then sure. I’d rather take a one year gamble on Burrell than give Bay a huge long term deal.

I think Overbay is more likely to do well in 2010 then Burrell and overbay should be cheaper to aquire.

He’d probably be cheaper financially, but I would think Toronto would ask more for Overbay in trade.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 25, 2009 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

Why?

The Jays have a first full of OF candidates in the upper minors and above, Wallace (whom many think is destined for 1st) and falling revenue last year. I don’t think the Jays are going to DFA Overbay but if someone is giving them a little something and taking the contract that is darn good deal for a team trying to both trim down over head and reload the system.

One big point lost in the Yankess brouhaha of the Vazquez trade is teams are not adding payroll and paying in talent for that privilege now. Valaquez is a darn good pitcher and is a much harder to find talent level then Overbay, who basically a hod carrier at this point in his career, really to the Braves got wages relief and promising A ball arm and 4th outfielder that can play resonibale CF.

It's funny

last year a good portion of us (myself included) wanted Burrell to bring his first baseman’s glove to SF. Now… no thanks.

He is a horrible, horrible defensive outfielder.

This. He’s even comically bad, at times. I’ve never seen Uggla play outfield, but I can nonetheless say that Burrell is a much worse defensive outfielder than Uggla.

I don’t know how you can say he’s worse than uggla would be in the outfield. According to a quick google search, uggla’s never played there, and he’s already considered a bad fielder at his normal position of 2b.

well we could still stick him at 1B with DeRosa in LF, right?

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 25, 2009 8:12 AM PST up reply actions

we could, but he was lousy offensively last year as well. I’d much rather sign a Beltre or LaRoche with DeRosa moving to left. (assuming DeRosa takes the Giants’ offer) At least with Beltre, you’re getting the Gold Glove defense even if he’s also declining offensively, and LaRoche is pretty much in his prime.

I just like the fact that Burrell would only be a one year commitment because of the stronger class of free agent 1B next year. I’d rather gamble on Burrell for 1 year and have him fail miserably than overpay Beltre and have his only value come on the defensive side for 3 or 4 years.

But his normal position of 2B is way harder to play than LF.

I have a soft spot for Burrell

But I don’t know if he’s the best fit for us right now.

I'm not sure about that

Even with his defense, Burrell had been worth more WAR than Rowand 3 of 4 years before 2009. Burrell’s older, but only by about a year.

What sense would it make for Tampa Bay, who wants to unload Burrell because of his contract, take on a worse contract to get it done?

Burrell is coming off a horrific year and is a miserable outfielder… but he can draw walks and has some power. I’m not sold on him but he is a better alternative to some of the other players Sabean is interested in

On his own, Burrell looks like a bad option.

But I’d rather take a chance on him than the older Dye, and I prefer his upside to Podsednik (who I see as about equivalent to what we’ve got), and while I’d take DeRosa over Burrell as a player, I prefer Burrell’s 1-year contract.

All of this hinges on Burrell being available essentially gratis, or even partially paid for, of course.
