The scary thing is they need another outfielder if Damon doesn't come back. Why not add Bay, too?

career .716 OPS screams 4th OF to me….thats quite a bit worse than Rowand’s career line. Considering its pretty much like acquiring a corner outfield bat as either he or McLouth will now play a corner spot this looks like a pretty horrible trade.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 22, 2009 8:10 AM PST up reply actions

He looks like one of those guys that everyone assumes will get better with age — but doesn’t. It’s pretty impressive that at age 21 he hit a 95 OPS+ but he’s been pretty much the same hitter every year since. He’s a below average defender in CF, too.

by xanthan on Dec 22, 2009 8:16 AM PST up reply actions

The Giants would never agree to take on Vazquez’s 11 million dollar salary.

I wonder if the Braves are going to redirect the savings into the team or put it in their pocket?

WHY IS BOCOCK?!

well, I guess we pretty much have the undisputed best starting rotation in the NL now. If I were a Braves fan I would be livid that the team acquired an inferior outfield hitter for Vazquez than they probably couldve gotten for Lowe (Bradley)

Jonny Gomes would more or less get it done, if they want to stay cheap. With so much good defense in the starting OF and on the bench, they can probably survive Gomes’ clanktitude.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 22, 2009 9:13 AM PST reply actions

It's not the full deal yet....

By getting about $8M in salary relief, the Braves will now have the money to go after the impact bat that they need. Don’t judge this trade until they make that move. They had starting pitching excess and the 19 year old prospect they got has a lot of upside.

Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

Mariners?

Getting Granderson, Vazquez and Nick Johnson without having to give up either of their two young big league pitchers or their top prospect is pretty nice, but I gotta think adding Lee, Figgins and Bradly while only sacrificing some fairly unspectacular prospects and Carlos freakin Silva is an even better offseason.

I woke up and saw this on ESPN, and got immediately pissed. How did this happen?

Did New York just come in and say “We are the Yankees, give us your best pitcher, here have this outfielder that we basically already stated we replaced”

Braves: “Weeeeeeell, alright.”

by Gobroks on Dec 22, 2009 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

Perhaps this is just wishful thinking, but...

one good thing is that the Yankees are really depleting their farm system this offseason, and if they have any significant injuries during the season (quite possible with the amount of older players they have), they won’t have the resources to make a trade at the deadline. And Vazquez seems to get traded a lot considering his talent level, which makes me think there must be something about him that makes him a negative clubhouse presence. And I don’t remember him being all that comfortable in New York the first time around, so hopefully its meltdown time. And when Burnett has that season ending injury we all know is coming, blah, blah, blah… Fuck the Yankees!!!

by crazedcrustacean on Dec 22, 2009 11:10 AM PST reply actions

Their farm system is all international FA, they can replenish it easily.

Exactly;

all the rest of MLB, plus every other place they play baseball on earth, counts as the Yankees’ farm system.

They must be eliminated from existence.

I may be wrong, and would not be surprised if I am

But aren’t the only players in their lineup who have any type of injury history leading to significant time missed are Burnett, Posada, and (to a lesser extent) ARod? ARod also came back and proceeded to still be ARod.

I just am not sure this is something that you can try to bank on.

Also I do not think their team is that old.

He is going to DH in probably the 8 spot in the order. If he goes down the Yankees are not done for. This is a team that won the world series last year while starting this guy at 3B in 20 or so games.

His 2009 season looks like a bit of an abberation, even though he’s a pretty good pitcher. Considering his career 4.19 ERA, 107 career OPS+, 8.1 K/9 rate, and his 33 years of age (34 in July), it looks like his 2009 was way out of line with his career. While I certainly wouldn’t mind having him on the Giants, is it really that big of a deal? Curious to hear what you all think.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
