A Case for Laroche

Ok... Nick Johnson is gone and the list of available free agents is shrinking by the day.  I am sure we are all aware of the team needs but for the sake of this fanpost lets recap -

1) Offense

Ok great.

I think that we are also in agreement that we would perfer a 1B so that Sandoval can stay at 3B and maintain his value in that spot.  So with all that said let me present a case for Mr. Adam Laroche.

Let me start off by saying that I am not thrilled by the idea of Laroche but then again I am not thrilled by the idea of any of the FA on the market.

So why Laroche?

Well -

He plays a position of need

He is a solid defender

He is a +15 run producer at the plate which would make him an easy second on the team behind Pablo at +34.9

He satisfies the Dingerz gland. Which is marketable, exciting, and provides protection for Sandoval.

He is younger than Johnson and doesnt have a history of injury.

He unlike Zito is trending in the right direction. 2009 saw the best BB%, OBP, and second best OPS and wOBA of his career.  His BABIP was slightly elevated but nothing abnormally high.

His contract demands have softend from 3 and 25 to 3 and 18 which as a 2.4 WAR player is a pretty good value.

His power seems legit as Hittracker has only 2 of his 25 HR listed as Lucky while 19 of the 25 are listed as Plenty or No Doubters.

Is a type B FA so he wont cost us a pick.

Could provide some return value in a trade whereas our current players obviously arent very desirable. (other than pitchers of course)

That seems to be about it. Although there may be more but I am too lazy to look it up.  I know that there are also red flags but I would rather the Giants go out and make mistakes trying to get better than to sit back and expect different results with the same team.  I only wish that they would be wililng to admit certain mistakes and cut ties with players that are dragging us down.

Thoughts?

I lean the otehr way. I realy don’t think LaRoche would wow us inside the 2 seasons. In thta case I want the team already in the mind set that they needs to be an upgrade. They sign him for 3 years and the mind set in the front office is First doesnot suck green donkey balls errgo first is fine.

Though if this team signs LaRoche after non-tendering Garko, I will be forced to hurt someone in the Giants FO. But I’d rather have Ishikawa anyway; he’s cheaper, he’s got some pretty good upside, and I liked his development last year.

You’re not a contact hitter either Travis. I was hoping this whole god thing was gonna work out for him last year. I guess he doesn’t really choose favorites?

I would rather have Delgado a

Delgado is a great hitter, and he fills the power need. He could hit probably 25+ dingers for the Giants. He draws a lot of walks, he hits high slugging and obp. His average isn’t (as Charles Barkely would say) TURRIBLE. He hits 265 or better.
Also Guys if you want the next best thing to Nick Johnson why not Felipe Lopez. Why have there been no postes about this Guy. He gets on base hits high average, gets tons of hits, gets lots of abs , hits high slugging percentage. Check him out he would be a great fit. The Giants offense would greatly improve if they signed both Felipe Lopez and Carlos Delgado.

Felipe Lopez

Had a career year buoyed by a .360 BABIP. Probably is really a ~2 WAR player, which is nice, but wouldn’t be enough to cover the move of Pablo to first (FSanch to third)

I’d like Delgado on a short, not super expensive deal (probably between $5-7mil)

I’m actually all for LaRoche at this point, assuming his price comes down significantly. He’s been about a 2.5 win player for most of his career and he’s not very old.

No way do I want to give him 3/30 or whatever he’s asking for but something like 2/16 could be a good deal for the Giants.

I’m not sure what it is about LaRoche that seems to make him so underrated. I mean, you look at his career record and he’s an above average, though not elite first baseman. But to hear people talk about him, you would think he was a horrible player.

by mocal on Dec 21, 2009 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

I like LaRoche, but..

I was pretty hot on LaRoche earlier in the offseason, and for the reasons stated above (at the price/years) I would be still very happy with him on the team. However, my only concern is that ATT will do to LaRoche’s power numbers what it did to JT Snows. They are kind of similar hitters in that way. The line drives from a lefty may go from homers, to doubles (at best). Still, if he can do that consistently with runners on, he would be a solid upgrade offensively and at a position that needs to be filled.

by uber on Dec 21, 2009 2:30 PM PST reply actions

Doubles are better than GIDP or K

Can’t verify myself, but along with the aforementioned low “cheapies” stats it was reported by a scout (can’t recall the article, I think Baggs during the winter meetings) that he would have no problem “getting them out of [AT&T Park]”. This is where I’m at. I’d prefer not to give a player an extra unnecessarily, but if it takes that third year to get him under contract, I’m fine with that. There’s no first base talent in the upper minors that would be blocked and he is a player who could be traded at some point in the future. As long as we’re not talking about more than 3 years or $20mil, bring him aboard.

1B FAs after the 2010 and 2011 seasons

You know, I hadn’t thought about that too much. Quick research:

Joe Mauer: FA after the ‘10 season. May move to 1B to extend his career.
Adrian Gonzalez: FA after the ’11 season (club option for ’11 will get picked up). May get traded and signed to an extension.
Carlos Pena: FA after ’10.
Lance Berkman: has a $15mil club option for 2011. Will be old.
Lyle Overbay: FA after ’10.
Prince Fielder: don’t know Prince’s arb status, but his contract runs through the end of this season.
Albert Pujols: has a $16mil club optino for 2011 that will almost certainly be picked up. Not likely to see FA in any case.
Derrek Lee: FA after ’10. Do not want.
Ryan Howard: FA after ’11. Not likely to see FA.
Carlos Guillen: FA after ’11. Do not want.
Paul Konerko: FA after ’10. Do not want.

So that’s the list. There are certainly some intriguing names on there, but I don’t expect Pujols, Gonzalez, or Howard to see free agency. If Mauer does leave Minnesota, he’ll likely end up in Boston or the Bronx. So that leaves Fielder (arb status?), Pena, Overbay, and Berkman as possible, desirable options. Fielder, Pena, and Overbay would all be FAs next winter and Berkman might be as well. That means that any multi-year contract the Giants give to a first-baseman would prevent the team from pursuing a possibly superior replacement. So the real issue is whether to even give a second year to a free agent signing.

Huge tip of the cap to Cot’s Baseball Contracts.

If the Giants sign LaRoche I’m going to punch someone in the face since LaRoche and Garko are basically the same player.

by xanthan on Dec 21, 2009 4:38 PM PST reply actions

That was my first reaction, but LaRoche has been significantly more valuable over the last three years, according to Fangraphs.

by Dan from NM on Dec 21, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

Some of that is PT-related but:

LaRoche career wOBA: .353
Garko career wOBA: .347

LaRoche career UZR/150 1B: -4.8
Garko career UZR/150 1B: -4.6

Even if you want to make the case that Garko is a downslide in his career, LaRoche is probably only .5 wins better than Garko going forward. And he’s going to need a 2/3 year deal to sign. It just seems ridiculous to punt Garko and sign LaRoche. How much would the Giants really be improving their team? Seems like a huge lateral move to me.

by xanthan on Dec 21, 2009 4:50 PM PST up reply actions

CHONE projections

LaRoche
Offense: +5 runs
Defese: -3 runs

Garko
Offense: +7 runs
Defense: -2 runs

by xanthan on Dec 21, 2009 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not sure why Garko projects better offensively than LaRoche…

Looking at the actual numbers, it seems odd that LaRoche’s OBP is projected to be so low (.328) when he hasn’t been below .340 since 2005.

I would wager some if it’s BABIP regression since LaRoche posted a BABIP of .332 last season over a career of .317. While Garko’s BAIBP of .282 was nearly 20 points under his career average of .309

by xanthan on Dec 21, 2009 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

Also, better defensively? Dubious indeed. These projections are sort of like Nostradamus predictions in the sense that people who believe them will clutch on to one somewhat accurate prediction and ignore the 2 or 3 that are really off.

"Seems like a huge lateral move to me."

What other “good” news do you expect from The Sabean? And make no mistake lateral moves are the good news when The Sabean is calling the shots. Or I guess we can hope for him to do what Z did in SEA with Langerhans ( non tendered him then re-signed to a lower rate) but I just can’t stretch my mind far eno9ugh to see Sabean doing that.

by sanfrankid on Dec 22, 2009 11:05 PM PST up reply actions

That’s not entirely true.

Garko last three years
wOBA: .356, .333, .338
wRC+: 124, 105, 107
Fielding: -7.8, -5.2, 0.2
WAR: 3 in 1504 PA

LaRoche
wOBA: .346, .357, .357
wRC+: 111, 120, 120
Fielding: 6.3, -5.9, -0.5
WAR: 6.4 in 1815 PA

He’s got about a 300 PA advantage over Garko.

by jponry on Dec 21, 2009 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

They are pretty close as players, though. I’m fine with calling LaRoche better going forward, but how much better? .5 wins? I can’t see much separation between them. Careerwise, they are really, really close as players. If the Giants want to pay LaRoche 2-years, $20M (or whatever it’s going to cost them) to improve themselves by (at most) .5 wins per season then they’ve made a really poor decision.

by xanthan on Dec 21, 2009 4:56 PM PST up reply actions

LaRoche has been worth about 1 WAR per 600 PA over Garko the last three years, though I suppose with Garko you would have to take into account the fact that you probably would be more likely getting 450-500 PA of Garko and then 150-200 of Ishikawa, so I dunno.

I mean, I don’t really disagree with you re: Garko but that ship has just sailed. It was stupid and awful, but there’s not a whole lot we can do about it now.

This is what’s more annoying:

Let’s call this player we are talking about LaGarko, since they are so similar. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the right-handed LaGarko, considering we have Ishikawa sitting around? Having the left-handed LaGarko and Ishikawa on the same roster makes no sense, whereas there are platoon/defensive things you can do with the right-handed LaGarko.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by rotorueter on Dec 22, 2009 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

Isn’t that the same lament? This also require one to accept the premise that Ishikawa is a worthy starting 1st baseman. Hardly axiomatic.

by Rorsavelt on Dec 23, 2009 4:15 AM PST up reply actions

I thought the grougthink here

was he was terrible? Have the propellorheads recalibrated their statification machines? Or are we just now too resigned (not re-signed) to getting him or nothing?

I think the consensus was that he wasn’t much of an upgrade over in-house options. Now with Garko gone, LaRoche looks a lot better than Ishi and… well Ishi. But not at the price he’s asking.

For first base options we’re down to LaRoche & Branyan. If you’re part of the crowd that wouldn’t mind shifting Pablo to first, at third we have Beltre & DeRosa (although Garko at first & Pablo at third still would have been better). For the gamblers we have Carlos Delgado & Troy Glaus.

LaRoche isn't a bad hitter

But he’s basically Ryan Garko with a little better defense, which is probably nullified as he’s a LHH at AT&T, while Garko is right-handed. So signing LaRoche for even something like 2/12 is kind of retarded when we could have had pretty much the same production from a younger player for less money with less commitment. It’s not that LaRoche is a bad option so much that a much better option, Garko, got non-tendered so a LaRoche signing is kind of weird.

And yeah, right now he’s probably the best infield upgrade from FA.

If the team signs LaRoche, all I’m going to think about is how Garko would’ve made a great platoon partner with him…. since, you know, LaRoche can’t really hit lefties

by Rorsavelt on Dec 23, 2009 4:22 AM PST up reply actions

Is it possible the Giants non-tendered Garko because they assumed they had the best offer on the table for Nick Johnson? Now that Johnson has turned down more money to play in NYY, is there a chance the Giants crawl back to Garko? Is there a chance Garko hasn’t had his feelings hurt too much to take the offer? Seem like Garko is the best value, but if he can’t be had, I wouldn’t mind a LaRoche signing. Definatly wouldn’t mind it at 6mm a year.

by Rorsavelt on Dec 23, 2009 4:24 AM PST up reply actions

what are we even doing this offseason

i realize the giants usually wait until either the day before/the day of/the day after christmas to make any moves but what moves are there even to make right now? lord knows bay and holliday arent coming here, we couldnt afford them even if they wanted to be here. were weak in the outfield, need a big bat, and need a solid 1B, preferably also a big bat. not to mention someone thats not like 35 playing short. i like laroche but something about signing him makes me a little weary. hairston would be okay but hes not the huge bat we need. i say no to podsednik and if blalock is slowly but surely decling like everyone says we dont need him and that situation either.
