All I Want for Christmas Is...
Over the years I've learned that McCovey Chronicles is a place we assemble for more than just (Giants) baseball talk. I've come to appreciate the gathered masses here more than ever, and look forward to threads with recommendations on everything from food to music to books,
So my question: Beyond the usual of a BIG hitter for our team, world peace, a better economy, yadda yadda yadda, what do you hope will be under the tree come Christmas morning?
I was a bit greedy this year and asked for a Nikon D90 for a combined Christmas/birthday gift from my wife/parents/in-laws. For a smaller gift I'd love a black Giants hat with an orange bill like the one the team recently debuted –– not the gangsta New Era style, rather the one that Grant sports in all his pics. Some books (and the time to read them), maybe a CD or two.
My mom got the family a Wii, which is noteworthy because the last video game console I owned (and still have in its original box) was an Atari 2600.
What else is out there that's cool? I'm interested to see what you all are wishing for this Christmas.

I don’t want anything much. I asked for Stephen King’s new book and Ball Four by Jim Bouton. We’ve got a mortgage to pay now, so Christmas will be leaner this season.
Filed under leaner can be bettter.
Last year Mrs Exile made cup cakes without being noticed and got up in the middle of the night to placed them on the table so they would be a morning surprise. It was great touch.
Unfortunely one of the dogs got up after her and before the rest of the house and “taxxed” half the cup cakes off the plate on the table top. But it was still a great Xmass morning moment.

I’m essentially just asking for money. There are a few things I want but they are all pretty expensive so I’m just trying to get up a pool of money.
I still need to buy the Beatles Stereo Box Set and Beatles Rock Band, but I also have to buy a system that will support it. Probably going to get a Wii because of the Mario games on it.

And I’m not familiar directly with the D90, but I’ve got a D40 and it’s really amazing to have cameras like that. Pictures are millions of times better.

The D90's got HD vid capabilities, but I want it more to take better pics of my kids.
My D100 finally went kaput a year ago, and I’ve been using a little Fuji point-and-shoot for family photos. Takes decent pics but the shutter lag misses a lot of golden moments.

I think you're going to like the D90
My friend got a D90 about a year ago, and he absolutely loves it (he shoots mainly portraits). If you’re going to use it for portraiture/family photos, getting a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens would help a lot because it’s fast and works in practically any lighting conditions. Plus, it’s only around $100, so it’s a good investment.

I’m not much of a Nikon guy, but the D90 is tops. I still love my 5d Mark ii, though. Make sure you get at least a 16GB card with your camera. The 1080P eats memory like Prince Fielder goes through veggie patties.

Wii, 360, PS3… take your pick.
A lot of it has to do with knowing what to shoot. The other part is what how your subject works with you. Experience and luck go a long way in photography.
The next part is how to shoot your subject in a certain light, what angle to use, how to incorporate a background if necessary, and how to frame the picture in your camera.

That’s where your own style comes into play. A good 50mm lens helps, too. I like to use a 100mm macro to get very intricate detail. With outdoor I use a 70-200mm f2.8. Just need to pay attention to your exposure.
Photoshop cleans it up.

No present list this year. Mrs. Roger and I are giving ourselves a new bed and hopefully some better night’s sleep in the New Year (although how the new bed will keep the cats from walking around on our heads has yet to be determined).
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Dogs will help that problem. However I have yet to figure out how to keep the dogs from barking/squeking toys in my ear in the morning.

This’ll be my first medium format camera. I know I won’t actually get it for Christmas, no one else in my family knows anything about cameras so I wouldn’t trust them to buy it anyway, but I would like to get it before the weather starts to improve and backpacking season starts.
I’d really like to get in an entire season of shooting with it this year to get used to the new camera/format because I’m planning on hiking the John Muir Trail with a couple of friends in the summer of 2011 and shooting that experience on 35mm just wouldn’t do it justice.
