All I Want for Christmas Is...

Over the years I've learned that McCovey Chronicles is a place we assemble for more than just (Giants) baseball talk. I've come to appreciate the gathered masses here more than ever, and look forward to threads with recommendations on everything from food to music to books,

So my question: Beyond the usual of a BIG hitter for our team, world peace, a better economy, yadda yadda yadda, what do you hope will be under the tree come Christmas morning?

I was a bit greedy this year and asked for a Nikon D90 for a combined Christmas/birthday gift from my wife/parents/in-laws. For a smaller gift I'd love a black Giants hat with an orange bill like the one the team recently debuted –– not the gangsta New Era style, rather the one that Grant sports in all his pics. Some books (and the time to read them), maybe a CD or two.

My mom got the family a Wii, which is noteworthy because the last video game console I owned (and still have in its original box) was an Atari 2600.

What else is out there that's cool? I'm interested to see what you all are wishing for this Christmas.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I don’t want anything much. I asked for Stephen King’s new book and Ball Four by Jim Bouton. We’ve got a mortgage to pay now, so Christmas will be leaner this season.

by xanthan on Dec 21, 2009 11:53 AM PST reply actions

Filed under leaner can be bettter.

Last year Mrs Exile made cup cakes without being noticed and got up in the middle of the night to placed them on the table so they would be a morning surprise. It was great touch.

Unfortunely one of the dogs got up after her and before the rest of the house and “taxxed” half the cup cakes off the plate on the table top. But it was still a great Xmass morning moment.

I’m essentially just asking for money. There are a few things I want but they are all pretty expensive so I’m just trying to get up a pool of money.

I still need to buy the Beatles Stereo Box Set and Beatles Rock Band, but I also have to buy a system that will support it. Probably going to get a Wii because of the Mario games on it.

The D90's got HD vid capabilities, but I want it more to take better pics of my kids.

My D100 finally went kaput a year ago, and I’ve been using a little Fuji point-and-shoot for family photos. Takes decent pics but the shutter lag misses a lot of golden moments.

Noonan. Nooooonan!

That’s the biggest advantage with SLRs, no (or hardly no) shutter lag. There’s nothing better for kids, sports, or pets.

I think you're going to like the D90

My friend got a D90 about a year ago, and he absolutely loves it (he shoots mainly portraits). If you’re going to use it for portraiture/family photos, getting a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens would help a lot because it’s fast and works in practically any lighting conditions. Plus, it’s only around $100, so it’s a good investment.

Wii, 360, PS3… take your pick.

A lot of it has to do with knowing what to shoot. The other part is what how your subject works with you. Experience and luck go a long way in photography.

The next part is how to shoot your subject in a certain light, what angle to use, how to incorporate a background if necessary, and how to frame the picture in your camera.

That’s where your own style comes into play. A good 50mm lens helps, too. I like to use a 100mm macro to get very intricate detail. With outdoor I use a 70-200mm f2.8. Just need to pay attention to your exposure.

Photoshop cleans it up.

What exactly does that mean? Seriously, Mr. Merope has a bass guitar he keeps saying “I’ll never play it, I should get rid of it.” What specifically are you looking for? I’ve no idea what this on is cuz it’s been in the closet for the past 5 years!

by Merope on Dec 21, 2009 3:16 PM PST up reply actions

Mr. Merope sounds like me

I have 6 basses and I play 2 of them most of the time. I have been meaning to sell the other 4. (None are short-scale, Hairball. Sorry!)

WHY IS BOCOCK?!

by Lars The Wanderer on Dec 21, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

He has 3 or 4 geetars… only 1 is a bass, there’s also an acoustic, and one or two electrics.

by Merope on Dec 21, 2009 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

I recommend an Ibanez bass guitar, if you’re on budget.
Just thought you should know =)

or a Fender Jazz.

I wanted a job and a good point and shoot camera, and I got both. For the first time in a long time, I can’t think of something I need. I’m always happy to get stuff like DVDs, tea, giftcards, and cash, but it’s more important for me to be with my friends and loved ones.

But if Santa wanted to bring me a motorcycle or a Fox 601 bassoon or two tickets to PHX that I can use for spring training in March, I’d be happy with that too.

MLB Home Plate – not as good as it used to be, plus you’ll have to listen to Yankees, Red Sox, Cubbies and Phillies fans non-stop (to say nothing of Jim Bowden for 3 hrs every night)…BUT it is great to listen and talk baseball year-round.

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

there could be a surpise here. Last summer we were someplace with the kids and I commented on a Lincecum jersey, the most thoughtful of them (soon to be daughter in law) asked who my fave Giant was. I said “o, not the guys on the team now, I follow the ones you never heard of yet”. Should have thought quicker and said “Thomas Neal”

Mostly we are dialing down the presents, keep the house less cluttered. But a digital SLR would be nice, the poster from Reno mentioned an affordable refurbished Olympus that sounded good to me. Could be present to self this summer.
