Where are you from, Giants fans?
So, you're a Giants fan. Not really sure why you'd devote so much time and energy to watch such a pathetic batting lineup, but you know you like Timmy and his Choco tacos. Cain doesn't know how to win, ever, but hey, he's got some good stuff. Hell, you might even like some of Zito's pitching performances when it's not the first half of the season. And maybe you like the Panda's newfound devotion to eating less than 3 room service meals a day.
The San Francisco Giants began as the New York Giants in 1883, when Randy Johnson was a wide-eyed batboy for the Boston Beaneaters. Since then, we have come a long way and won the most number of games in sports history, and since then the Giants fanbase has disintegrated to short, terse uses of "TWSS!", "BORK", and "STFD". We have really come a long way.
Speaking of a long way, where are you from? No, you can't vote for two locations, who do you think you are?

East Coast (VA). I’m usually very sleepy the next day at work after staying way too late to watch the Giants.
How was the storm? Philly was shut down.

My girlfriend is from back east and everyone was sending her picture messages of the snow so she sent back a picture message of the sunny weather and a palm tree. She didn’t get nice responses back. It was beautiful in the South Bay on Sunday though.

Second biggest snowfall I’ve ever seen here and I’ve lived here on and off for 20 years now. I really miss my Jeep. I remember after the blizzard of ’96 when the city was too poor to plow the roads virtually having the city to myself because I could drive over the piles and drifts and sometimes having to drive on sidewalks sometimes to get around because there were stuck cars all over the city blocking roads.
Now I got little wimp car I had to dig out not once but twice thanks to a totally gratuitous (and malicious) snow plow maneuver. But I did get a snow day today!

Omaha didn’t get touched by the most recent storm, but the one a couple of weeks ago shut the city down. We got ten inches, which is huge for Omaha. They hadn’t had a storm that big in twenty-some years.

23 inches in Philly. Record is 30 (96) and behind that was 20 inches.

Big cities always have a problem with large amounts of snow. There’s nowhere to put it, so the streets never really get plowed.

Shortly after i moved to Boston they had a combined blizzard/hurricane storm which, having lived my entire life at that point in California, just blew my mind. But I found that Boston preprared for storms briliiantly, lots of communication with the residents and good plowing on the main roads at least. Chicago was even better. First year I lived in Chicago there was a storm that started on New Year’s Eve and didn’t end till Jan. 3 — 38 inches. Then it proceeded to be sub-zero weather for the next 5 weeks during which it snowed many more times. The sidewalks were turned into these giant snow canyons, and sometimes snow tubes, but driving on the streets was never terribly difficult.
DC on the other hand, after the blizzard of ’96 (an incredible for DC 26 inches), declared that it was too expensive to pay workers OT to plow the street, and that we could all wait until in melted. The city was completely shut down for over a week.

The snow was intense in DC! I had a flight to SF scheduled for Saturday, but it got pushed back a day. I barely was able to get to the airport (Dulles) yesterday since the metro buses weren’t running and the shuttles were booked solid… luckily I was able to find a ride, after pushing my friend’s car across an icy back road.

Round the corner from the UnSafeway. The first time I lived here was ‘88 and I was on 8th and D, NE, just down the block from DC General. There was a group of guys who always hung out at the 7-11 across the street who’d get their drugs from the midnight shift orderlies at the hospital. I remember one of them I used to give occasional beers to to watch my car (the only in my block that never had a window broken!) and one day I noticed an uzi dangling underneath his jacket and when he saw me looking at it, he said, “on the Hill you definitely gotta believe in the power of firearms.”

Oh man. The craziness of the district. I was really little when we lived there, but I definitely remember when my dad’s car windows were smashed. I also remember when the apartment building around the corner burned down. The official story was that some lady was smoking crack and passed out. The pipe was still smoldering and rolled under her couch. Oops.
Joe Martinez: You are cool.

And lest anyone think I was trying, and failing to make a joke about the UnSafeway, there’s a long DC tradition of nicknaming all the Safeways, typically with another word beginning with S (Secret Safeway, Social Safeway, Soviet Safeway). I’ve actually witnessed heated debates about which is named what at parties here.

I suppose I was. The mascot was a particularly big issue the two years I was there (92-93) and there was a vote in the student government elections to remove it. I’m not sure if the party running to remove the mascot actually would have had the authority to do so if even if they’d won (which they didn’t). But I guess that’s never stopped parties from making it part of their platform.

Long story, here’s the short version:
My Little League team won city—I played first and batted over .300, no power, lousy D, slow. But we won. For winning, we got to see a Reds game at Crosley. They played the Giants.
We took infield with the Reds, big day. I worked up the courage to ask Pete Rose for his autograph. He was a complete dick.
Trying not to cry, wandered around, Willie McCovey saw, me took me to the Giants dugout, got my glove signed by him, Willie Mays, Jim Ray Hart, Jose Pagan, Juan Marichal. I was twelve.
Giants won the game. Mays, McCovey and Hart all went yard. I alienated all my teammates by rooting for the wrong team.

What is Sydney like? Seriously… I’d love to visit, and I know close to nothing about the city. Would you compare it to any other cities you’ve been to?

uh, it’s actually pretty similar to Hong Kong if everyone there spoke English and it wasn’t so heavily polluted.
it’s an extremely expensive place to live right now, but it’s pretty incredible. one of the most multicultural places in the world i think. you can get some of the most amazing food because of this. Just up around the corner from my house there are 2 italian, 2 thai, 2 vietnamese, 3 chinese restaurants and one korean BBQ restaurant all one one strip.
While Sydney does have some attractions, if you actually want to do a lot of stuff when you’re in australia you’re better off heading north, unless you’re really into shopping, sports and getting drunk. then sydney is very, very fun.
if you are going to come try to come around the start of autumn (march), i’d avoid coming anytime between nov-feb because of how hot it gets. today it was 35C (95F) at 6pm and you sort of dont want to come to a country when there are pretty heavy bushfires that happen basically every year that time. autumn is great because you get a nice mix of weather and most days are pretty sweet. winter isn’t that cold, but the rain can spoil your trip. spring is okay, but you’ll most likely get sick.
if you do come to sydney, i’d make sure you at least go to the gold coast which is like a 2+ hour drive.

fun parks, beer, fun beaches, lots of NICE women and the meter maids (instead of issuing tickets for expired parking, they put coins into the meter and plus they dress like this

i go to hong kong pretty much every year, the nightlife is pretty similar except there are waaay more drunk girls in sydney.
if you think hong kong, with breathable air, good weather and beaches which actually have waves and low e-coli counts, you’re pretty good. if you love beaches, you’d be insane not to come to australia.

Yes and no.
When Dad got the gig in Saudi with Aramco (Arabian – American Oil Co., can you imagine!) in ’77and moved the family there I was a junior in high school – but the schools available only went to the 9th grade. So we he picked out a private school (Pinewood, in Salonika) for me to attend.
On a side note…my Dad was Bechtel’s expediter at 50 Beale St. for our entire stint in the Bay Area (‘70 – ’73). He was also involved with the first pipeline in Alaska and then the refinery improvements with Aramco. A few years ago I sat down in his study and took a gander at his business connections, which were pretty much worldwide…and really got a different sense of what my father’s life outside the family must have been like. I’m envious as hell!
He’s now a much more interesting character, and I definitely regret not having more in – depth conversations with him before he passed. The guy was a fountain of information, but the love/hate relationship I had for him probably kept a lot of that from being passed on.
