Eli Whiteside One of the Worst at Blocking Pitches
My eyes tell me differently.
Good thing we gave him 127(!!) at-bats last season. He can't hit or catch very well, but my god does he call a nice game.

I was under the impression
that we were all going to share bad Lars.

Small sample size, a wide range of variables involved in each play … there’s a high probability of any one catcher’s rating being nonsense.
The sample size is large enough to tell the best guys from the worst, I’d guess. But of course you’re right that relatively small differences are not meaningful, so the exact ordering is unknown. We can’t tell, for instance if Whiteside (85.9%) is really better than Kelly Shoppach (83.9%) or worse than Ronny Paulino (89.3%). But it’s pretty close to a sure thing that he’s worse than Zaun (95.9%).
The sample size for Whiteside is 113 pitches! And there’s apparently no way to control for the pitcher, the park, the scorer, the weather, the break and speed of each pitch, the speed and aggressiveness of the baserunner, the game situation, etc. And this metric ignores every other aspect of a catcher’s job, from grabbing high-and-outside pitches to throwing out runners on steals to catching pop-ups to calling pitches and working with the pitcher. I really think it’s non-information without a ton more context.
The 95% confidence interval on the mean for Whiteside would be around +/-7%. That’s obviously based on some dubious assumptions, but it’s a decent place to start. There’s a minimal chance, even based on this sample size, that he’s as good as Zaun.
Obviously there are a whole bunch of other factors involved in evaluating catcher defense, but I was just referring to the measurement value of this particular metric.
I see one of the McCoven has manged to get to just outside The Sabean’s office door.

Missing an “H” ?
That does seem to be areoccurring theme with the Giants the last few years doesn’t it?

Well the good thing is the Giants wouldn’t be losing anything defensively with Olivo as opposed to Whiteside or Molina. And Barajas would be quite a bit better. In fact it looks like Barajas or Olivo (and you KNOW Sabes will sign one of them) would probably be a slight improvement over Molina, taking offense and defense together. And much cheaper.

This is one aspect where I don't hold much regard for the defensive metrics
Catcher is too hard a position to quantify defensively. He always seemed like a good defensive catcher to me; good arm, very quick on his feet.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
