SEC to start using a "playclock" during tournament play
The 20-second play clock begins;
* With no runners are on base
* A ball is called if the ball is not pitched within 20 seconds
* A strike is called on the batter, if he is not ready 5 seconds before time expires
The 90-second play clock begins;
* When the last out is made, and ends when the pitcher begins his windup
* Batting team is penalized a strike if they are not ready in 90 seconds
* Fielding team is penalized a ball if they are not ready in 90 seconds
* Half-inning clock is extended to 105 seconds for televised games
* Play begins whether the network is ready or not.

I don’t mind the idea of keeping the game moving but they are addressing the wrong issues. They should watch game 5 of this years WS and see where the delay comes from.
-109 trips per inning to the mound by Posada
-2,000 trips to the mound by the Yankees coaching staff

* Batting team is penalized a strike if they are not ready in 90 seconds
* Fielding team is penalized a ball if they are not ready in 90 seconds
So…no warmup pitches or infield between innings? 90 seconds seems short even if it means until warmup starts – what if the right fielder is due up and has to run all the way to the third base dugout, get his batting gloves on, get his bat and helmet, get into the right mindset for his at bat, etc.

LIke what?
Not stepping out and adjusting their cup, gloves, helmet, belt, and elbow guard every pitch.

For one (obvious)
finding ways to compose themselves when their stuff isn’t working (ask Cain and Timmy about that).

Isn’t it the job of the umpiring crew to make sure the game is moving along?

Yes, they ought to just do a better job.

Catcher’s visits to the mound should count the same as a coach’s visit to the mound. Twice and the pitcher is done.

That is an interesting point. I could get on board with that, rather than the clock idea.

I see no provlem with trying this stuff out at the NCAA level.
Maybe it actually makes the game better, and better for TV so it will make more money, attract better owners, and our antagonists will be relieved of their duties when Ellison finally decides a baseball team can make him enough money to put some resources into it.

Sad, Sad, Sad
The rest of life is on the clock. Baseball, too? Not sure if Walt Whitman would have seen great things for America in this new game of baseball if it had been on the clock. Let the umpires determine the pace of the game. 7th inning stretch? How much time is needed if everyone is off to the restroom and concessions at the same?
