SF Giants Outfielders

Where have all the outfielders gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the outfielders gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the outfielders gone?
Bad soldiers every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Currently on the 25-man roster:
John Bowker
Fred Lewis
Aaron Rowand
Nate Schierholtz
Andres Torres
Eugenio Velez

When will they ever learn?

RHH
: Rowand
LHH: Bowker, Lewis, Schierholtz
SH: Torres. Velez

LF: ALL
CF: Rowand, Torres, Velez
RF: Rowand, Schierholtz, Torres, Velez

There are no outfielders from AAA Fresno who can come to the rescue. Do not depend on any
Flying Squirrels. And the Giants have prioritized a search for a corner infielder?

According to Peter Gammons the Giants would offer Jason Bay a 5yr deal however Bay does not
want to play in SF pure and simple. Other FA outfielders available:

Rick Ankiel
Marlon Byrd - rumor to be a Cub
Ryan Church
Coco Crisp - to A's ?
Jack Cust
Johnny Damon
Mark DeRosa
Jermaine Dye
Jonny Gomes
Matt Holliday
Xavier Nady
Scott Podsednik
Jeremy Reed
Marcus Thames

Bad soldiers every one?

Any one of these outfielders worth the monies? If Sabean offered Bay 5yrs why wouldn't he
offer Holliday 5yrs?

Ankiel on an inexpensive bargain bin deal?
Damon on a Renteria deal?
DeRosa on a 2yr deal?
Dye on a hometown discount?
Now batting leadoff for YOUR SF Giants Scott Podsednik?

Where have all the outfielders gone?
Long time passing

For Christmas me wants an outfielder. And a pony. And a rocketship.

A’s are going to give Coco Crisp 5 million for 2010. Remember when Billy Beane was considered the best GM in the game?

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

by rxmeister on Dec 20, 2009 6:54 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

With the defense of Crisp in CF and Davis in RF the A’s could afford to play me in LF.

but they’ve already got Sweeney, who’s a pretty good defender too. And nearly free.

My choice of afford was not a matter of finances but rather how proficient both Crisp and Davis are defensively.

Davis had a good year with the bat in 2009, but he’s going to have to prove it wasn’t a fluke. You’re whining about the quality of the Giants’ outfielders, but this is the same group that Davis couldn’t crack last year.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

yea the guy who put up a .360 OBP with 41 steals and very solid CF defense “couldn’t crack” our rotation………… somehow that doesn’t seem like a very fair assessment.

I've come down a little on Holliday

Obviously, Holliday would be a great addition in LF, but as Grant said, he’s not exactly a once-in-a-decade player for whom you break the bank. He’s the only one without flaws, but I think he’ll get more than he’s worth.

Of the rest, I’m most comfortable with Damon for 2 years since he’d add offense and not be a drag for future generations.

I mean, Boras wants 8yrs/130M. Holliday is not worth that. If the price was 5yrs for 75M-80M, I would sign that in blood.

As for the rest, I’m with you: Damon is the only I’d consider signing.

It’s not the per-year that I’m worried about; it’s the number of years. I don’t want to give any player an eight year contract. If you check my numbers, the annual salaries are actually higher for the shorter contract because I would definitely pay more per year to shorten the length of the contract.

Seriously

what are they doing with Fred? If he’s so horrible that Bork will never play him, free him into the wilds. He’s not much for pinchrunning, especially when there will be at least half of a vroom on the bench every game anyway.

I’d rather see him actually play, mind you, but since that seems about as likely as Santa Claus bringing some tasty ribeyes to the lineup. At least DFA him so the A’s or Padres can pick him up and I can see him play occasionally- I’d really be sad to see him as Fresno’s MVP next year.

The Giants’ should DFA Fred so that he can go someplace and get a chance? Is that Sabean’s job, to be a humanitarian? If so many posters around here think that Freddie Lewis can be a good productive player in the major leagues, you would think that just one GM out there has to agree with you, and it’s Sabean’s job to find that GM and get something of value for him if he has no plans of his own for Freddie.

I think it was one game for Bowker before he got hurt and went home. Nate is in the Puerto Rican league, I believe. I don’t think Bowker helped himself with management by taking the winter off. Even a big spring won’t help him if the Giants’ sign a high priced outfielder this off season.

Nady

I’ve slowly come around to the idea of Xavier Nady. I mean, if we’re not going to really upgrade the offense (because of trade demands or lack of money or whatever), then I’m willing to consider short-term solutions, however modest.

Nady’s Bill James projection is around .285/.340/.470. Sure beats Eugenio Velez. And if Nady isn’t good enough to play everyday, then at least he’s right-handed and a good complement to all the lefties.

He’s bound to be cheap, right?

by Dan from NM on Dec 20, 2009 10:49 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing. An outfield of Bowker/Torres in left, Rowand in center, and Nady in right, with Schierholtz getting time in both center and right, would be fine with me.

didn't realize this...

from wikipedia:

“On April 14, 2009, Nady suffered a right-elbow injury which ultimately required a second Tommy John surgery, despite an initial attempt to rehab the injury. The surgery will sideline him for an extended period of time, and is possibly career threatening, as the success rates for multiple elbow ligament replacement surgeries is lower.”

I've never been completely opposed to Nady

But the injury risk is pretty big, and he should be cheap, but I seriously doubt he puts up an .800 OPS. If we can get him on a minor-league deal, or for a million or so, by all means pick him up, but…I don’t know.

I really, really, really like Ryan Church. He plays good defense and knows how to take a walk. He has had troubles with injuries recently but the Giants wouldn’t have to play him everyday. The best part about Church is that he will be incredibly cheap.

What if we just stay with the status quo for now? Rowand in center will be his average-ish self. The Eugenio Velez Experiment will probably be short-lived. That won’t be good, but I think the Braintrust will have to let it play out until May and they are convinced Velez’s hot streak was an aberration, and then they will maybe look in another direction. That leaves Bowker, Lewis, and Nate. Based on the options available, the best choice may be to cross our fingers and hope one of these guys finally puts it together at the ML level. Is anyone available much more attractive, considering the cost?
