over all the Offense cost us about 12 wins last year. Bravo.
I really wanted to discuss the possibility of our offense improving due to the old addittion via subtraction thought process.
Do you think the perging of
Randy Winn = -13.4 Runs below average
Emmanuel Burriss = -12.9
Rich Aurilia = - 10.3
Bengie Molina = -9.3
will be enough to make a difference in our run production. Or are our replacements going to be equally as bad or worse.

I dunno.

Gotta hope, I think you mean.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
seems like winn cost us runs when Bochy let him hit righty
But his run production could not have been that bad from the left side.
And that Lincecum guy
..was just killing us. Him, Zito, and Burriss really sucked, apparently.

Addition by subtraction?
Since we seem unable to do addition by addition, it’s worth a shot. Nothing could be worse than Molina at cleanup and VETERAN GRIT grounding into 147 double plays per game.

I really want to see addition by division some time.

If we replace those guys with league-average players, we should have about an average offense, and though our pitching is due for some regression, 85 wins isn’t unreasonable. Rohlinger over Aurilia, Sanchez over Burriss, Posey over Molina, and Bowker over Winn are all pretty good upgrades (except maybe Rohlinger, but you need a utility guy), and I don’t think it’s crazy to imagine we could get better next season without any more moves. I think Ishi will be better next season (his power developed over the course of the year), I think Bowker has figured something out and given time, he can translate it into ML success, I think Schierholtz and Torres are decent CFs and therefore good 4th outfielders, I think Rohlinger not being Aurilia will help, and Posey is obviously Posey.
Aurilia and Burriss combined only had a little over 300 PA’s so the difference will be minimal there. Molina’s line may be a wash between Posey’s first year and whoever is sharing time with him. The main difference will be in who replaces all of Winn’s at bat’s, because, sweet jesus, his stat line from last year is atrocious. I’m thinking of printing it out and posting it on my door next Halloween.

“What is that?”
“I think it’s a…stat line…or…no…no..noNONONOONOAAAAAAAA!”
“IT’S A .035 ISO! RUN! AAAAAAAAAAA!”
Anyway, there may not be a large number of PAs, but I think Sanchez and Rohlinger over Burriss and Aurilia will make a difference, and possibly enough to win a few extra games, which is all we need. And I highly doubt that Posey won’t be a significant improvement over Molina; he won’t have Molina’s power, but he’s a lot quicker, he gets on base, and he’s probably better defensively. Plus, everything we’ve seen indicates he learns quickly and adjusts well, two qualities that indicate a good ML career.
Let us look at these results of these 333 P.A.s.
Burriss had 220 P.A’s with .292 OBP. The means he made an Out 70.8% of the time. That is about 155 Outs or over 51 innings worth of out all by his lonesome.
Aurilia had 133 P.A.’s with .256 OBP or 99 outs. The is 33 Innings worth of outs or a bit over one game.
Together they made 254 outs in 333 P.A.’s (for roughly a 280 OBP). So that is 84 & 2/3rds innings. In effect between those two the Giants were giving the opposing teams a numbers a very good relief pitcher without making them pay for the pitcher or even use the roster spot.
But wait there is more they also had 8 GiDP’s so they making double plays more often then then every player save Renteria. Over all that is a package that is beyond dismal.
Who’s brain did you bring me?

Molina’s line may be a wash between Posey’s first year and whoever is sharing time with him.
Even if Posey simply matches Molina’s overall offensive output, wouldn’t he still be an upgrade to the offense with his ability to:
- staying out of more GIDPs
- score from 2nd on a base hit
- score from 3rd on a sac fly

Well, the benefits of that would presumably be reflected in his offensive line. I was trying to identify additional areas where Buster instead of Molina would be an upgrade.

I was trying to imply that the benefits of taking more pitches helps the whole team, extends the length of innings, and gets the pitchers out of the game quicker

I didn’t mean to sound like Posey won’t be an upgrade over Molina (especially in the OBP department) but I was mainly taking into account “whoever he is sharing time with.” Whether that’s Whiteside or someone else they sign I think he will be seeing significant playing time since Sabean and Bochy seem absolutely determined that Posey “isn’t ready yet” and thus whatever positive contributions Posey makes will be offset by whoever he is sharing time with.

our pitching is due for some regression
Why, because we were aces last season and all we can do is regress?
I’m not down with the negative pitching vibes, Moriarity.

me neither, and if you just assumed that the offense would improve, than the pitching “regression” will be offset by the improved offense and you would still project the team to win the same amount of games. Why young pitchers like Timmy, Matt and Sanchez would not continue to get better and be expected to regress is beyond me. There’s no reason Barry Zito should regress, because he wasn’t that great anyway, and I don’t see why Mad Bum, a future number one starter, shouldn’t give us at least a better than average number five starter, even as a rookie. As for the bullpen, while certain individuals might not reproduce their seasons, it’s good and deep, and even Bochy should be able to find a reliable combination. I see them winning 88 games again, and even more if Sabean actually does something about the offense this off season.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
If we replace those guys with league-average players, we should have about an average offense
I doubt it. NL average last year was 718 runs. The Giants scored 657, but of course they were lucky to do so; their true level was around 625. In 2008, they were about 95 runs below average as well. That’s such a huge gap, I don’t see how they can make it up.
Bowker replacing Winn will hopefully be a pretty big upgrade offensively but I have a feeling Bowker in RF at AT&T would be a disaster defensively.
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.

What do you think this year is going to be like?
A rebuilding year? Playoff run year?
Personally, I think it will be more along the lines of 2008, but with better pitching overall due to Lincecum not having to pull the team by himself, and not-as-bad offense.
