Giants not getting Uggla
Don't know if this goes through because you have to be an "insider" to read it, but the Giants' don't want to give up Jonathan Sanchez. The funny thing is that Crasnick claims that Uggla's salary is a problem, but they just offered similar money to Nick Johnson yesterday, so his reasoning makes no sense.

Maybe they think that giving up a player like Sanchez because the Marlins don’t want to pay a player like Uggla is a salary issue.

I’m intrigued by the KLaw’s comments on Uggla:
Now is actually a great time to try to trade for Uggla as he’s coming off a slightly down year in batting average that is masking a significant spike in walk rate. He’s always had power, and his approach at the plate has improved for several years. If he maintains those secondary skills and posts a BABIP over .300 — something he did twice in three years before 2009 — oddly, he’s a potential MVP candidate.
Still wouldn’t even consider giving up Sanchez, but I’d consider something like Runzler.
Thing A
hopefully this is a ploy by Sabean to drive the price down. As you said, we need to hold on to Sanchez and get them to take a lesser pitcher.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
No way
Sabean is the Mr. Magoo of GMs, the only way he misses the flying log trap that would crush him is because he accidently slipped on a banana peel.
I sincerely doubt he’s actually doing anything on purpose, but if the price comes down i’m not going to complain (unless another team swoops and pays something I think the Giants should have been willing to pay)

By the way, I just heard Jon Heyman on WFAN in NY, and he was giving it to Giants’ management pretty good. He said that they’re the richest owners in baseball (not sure if that’s accurate or not) and they own their own ballpark, so people around baseball are amazed that they don’t go after top free agents like Holliday and Bay and continue to act like a mid to small market team.

a mortgage owed to who?
I believe the Giants owners also have an ownership stake in that particular bank… they’re taking money out of one pocket, putting it in the other, then claiming that because of this they have no money to spend.
That said, Heyman is pretty much just a mouthpiece for Boras, and I’m sure he’s pretty frustrated right now that teams like the Giants aren’t pushing up the bidding for Holliday. So while I think it is kind of ludicrous that we aren’t willing to take on a guy like Uggla’s salary, Holliday frankly just might not be worth it.

They own the bank, not the money in it.
The cash belongs to their depositors, i has to be paid back (and with a good return, if they want to keep their clientele).

i knew someone would get all economical on me...
still, wouldn’t you admit that it’s a little disingenuous to claim that it’s a mortgage holding you back when you own the bank? These guys have scads and scads and scads of money, and you don’t get that much money by being stupid— i guarantee they are turning quite a tidy little profit on the giants, mortgage or no mortgage

You’ve answered your own question. Even if, as Giantsrainman says, it’s actually the owner’s own money, they didn’t get it by being stupid. Stupid including forgiving a couple hundred million dollars in loans owed to you, especially when the payment being offset by revenue sharing rebates, so the team isn’t actually losing any money.

The Rumor Is
That the bank just administers the mortgage while the owners as individuals provided the actual finding and receive the the interest as profit minus the administration fees.
by giantsrainman on Dec 18, 2009 3:23 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, But
they can write it off against their revenue sharing obligations and it has been rumored that the owners as individuals are actually the source of the funding of this mortgage anyway and thus are just using the loan to take more profit in the form of the interest portion of the payments..

Agree with Heyman here
Also in an article about Adrian Gonzalez over at Fangraphs there was this little quote that made me laugh.
The A’s and Giants would both make sense and have the pieces, but the Giants seem tentative in adding good players.
Another interesting piece at BTB about the likelihood of a return of investment on Holliday/Bay/Damon.
That made me laugh when I read it as well.

I have to say, this apparent “WE CAN’T AFFORD HIM BECAUSE OF THE MONEY!” seems like total bullshit. If we can’t afford Uggla for $7mil, we can’t afford anyone.
I’m fine if the reason is that the Marlins won’t back off of Sanchez, because Uggla isn’t worth that, but this money thing is just bullshit.

Well, if they signed Johnson you’re taking on 7 mil & filling the hole at first. If we trade Sanchez for Uggla we take on 7 mil & fill the infield hole, but we’d have to spend more money to replace Sanchez. I’m sure Sabes wants to spend money elswhere too.
"It's too late now."
Where did I ever endorse trading Sanchez for Uggla? The excerpt seems to suggest that the Giants can’t afford him, period. I would never want to trade Sanchez for Uggla.

IAWTC
with the caveat that if when the season rolls around and they’ve signed no one new, that they admit it and roll back ticket prices an equivalent amount.
I haven’t seen the prices for next year yet, but somehow I doubt that will happen.

Sabean & Co. are also hesitant to part with Jonathan Sanchez, as his departure would leave the club with only three proven starters.

If the Giants payroll stays in the low 90’s I think the notion of not wanting to win and just wanting to turn a profit will have to be viewed as fact. With the Dodger situaish and the fact that the Padres are basically not contenders whatsoever, the Giants have the best staff in the division in tact for a few more years, plus Pablo and Posey; if they were really serious about bringing home a championship, or at least committing to try, now is the absolute time to do so. If they just upped the payroll to the low 100’s even, they could get Holliday and LaRoche, or Holliday and Uggla and really make a push to be “in this thing.”

I’m not sticking up for Giants’ management by any means, but perhaps they don’t think that any combination of FA’s or trades available out there does put them over the top, so they might as well keep their money in their wallets.
