Memorabilia Collections
HAVENT THE GIANTS DONE ANYTHING NEW SINCE FSANCHEZ?!? I"M GOING STIR CRAZY—
OK, so, I was curious about people's memorabilia collections. What do you have? How many pins? Any Croix collections of note? Is there some unlikely or weird piece of memorabilia you have?
How many baseballs have you gotten from games? Anyone have a bat that either was exchanged for a notable ball, or flew up into the stands and nearly decapitated you or your seatmate?
Me, I've tried to get autographed stuff, despite feeling like the saddest dork this side of Barry ZIto (I'm not a cute little kid, what the hell am I doing asking for an autograph? Yet I do.) I currently have signed Giants-issued cards of Zito and Wilson, and baseballs signed by Lincecum and Zito. These baseballs weren't signed personally for me, but were part of the "Cy Young WInners 3 Pack" at the Giants Community Fund auction after the Johnson/Santana Mets game in April. I gave the Randy Johnson baseball to my dad.
For sentimental reasons my favorite piece of autographed memorabilia still remains a card Bill Mueller signed for me in 2000. It was my first year as a real, game-attending fan; Billy had become my favorite player, a surprise, since usually I only pay attention to starting pitchers—I guess Estes got too whiny for me; and it was spontaneous, my first time venturing to the 2nd Street gate where the players exit, watching Baker get on his bike, Bonds vanish incognito, Aurilia walk across the street. Mueller came out for some reason, hair still mussed, and a fan called to him to start signing. So he started signing.
Autographs are weird. They're basically excuses to get in a personal space with someone you admire whom you wouldn't otherwise have a reason for approaching. I wonder what autograph hawks feel, if anything. They're just doing it to make a buck, aren't they? Maybe not completely.
I also have a scorecard from a Chronicle ballpark insert that I had signed by Shawn Estes in the 2000-2001 offseason. This was after the Incident of the Ankle at Second in the Evening, so I was wondering if people would still come. People came. Come to think of it, I think some of the people I saw at Zito's Strikeouts for Troops affair.
One of these days I want to get a ball hit into the stands. If only I could catch anything other than colds.

oh, and my dad caught a batting practice HR ball barehanded off the fly. It was from some random Rockies player, but still awesome. I got it signed by Jeffrey Hammonds. I also have a hat signed by John Miller, Scott Eyre, and some other random players. I got Scott Eyres autograph like 5 times for some reason.

I don't have much
But here’s what I’ve got:

Cain and Nen bobbleheads along with a Bonds 700 McFarlane figure. I got that foam K before the Lincecum’s game against the A’s in 09 at Mays Field. One of the Giants Squad or whatever it is was handing them out.

Barry’s ball

Randy Johnson commemorative 300th win bobblehead
I also have a 2009 Home Run Derby ball that my friend got when he went to the ASG in St Louis.

I’ve got a few signed balls that my dad got – one Willie Mays, and then a few others with assorted players – Bonds, Nen, Rueter, Grissom, Bell, maybe a couple more.
I have a lot more bobbleheads – Bonds, Cepeda, Marichal, Nen (same one as Natto), Aurilia, Omar (his head fell off R.I.P.) and Jon Miller.

I don't have much
I have the whole bobble head set with the black alternate unis. That includes…

I’ve caught a bunch of baseballs during BP but have also caught two during games. One foul ball off the bat of Jason Schmidt in a game against the Dodgers a while back and the second was Durham’s HR the night that Bonds came back from his knee injury in 2005 (retrosheet link). That was an awesome night.

I snagged a foul ball during a pre-season game at AT&T Park, off the bat of Steve Holm. I immediately handed it to my friend, who loves Steve Holm.
Another ball flew into the press box at AT&T September 2007. After skipping off a few sportswriters, I ended up with it. Andre Ethier hit the ball.
I have a few signed balls procured for me by others. One was signed by Ken Macha at A’s Fanfest in 2002, and another was signed by Prince Fielder at an event in Milwaukee a few years ago.
I’m not an autograph fiend, because I can’t be. I wasn’t huge on sigs to begin with. I still love my Prince Fielder ball, as it’s a sign that someone I once really loved is still important to me even though we couldn’t make our relationship work. It was a gift way after we’d broken up. He’s married now and doing well, so I’m happy for him.

My two favorite items:
Major-leaguer division: I have an autographed baseball by Jeff Conine, while he was in the minor leagues.
Minor-leaguer division: I have a baseball signed by Scott Seabol (yeah – try to top that!). It was a foul ball that missed my head by about 5 inches, while I was directing the cablecast of the game (we face away from the field, behind the open pressbox). All time trivia favorite.

I got a Willie Mays 1962 Topps that’s been graded PSA 8, a Willie McCovey 1960 Topps RC graded PSA 9, a Barry Bonds 1986 Topps Tiffany RC graded BGS 9.5, a Matt Cain 2002 Bowman Chrome RC Refractor (#‘rd to 300) graded PSA 10, a Tim Lincecum 2007 Bowman Chrome Blue Refractor (#’rd to 150 and Auto’d) graded BGS 9.5, and my fave, my 2006 Bowman Chrome Pablo Sandoval Gold Refractor (#‘rd to 50) graded BGS 9.5, and many more.
I recently said fuck it and bought myself a Christmas present, a Buster Posey 2008 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor (#’rd to 50 & Auto’d) graded BGS 9.5.
I have a pretty epic collection that my Dad got me into as a kid, and I collected until about 7th grade then got out of it. A couple years back my nephew was showing me some of his new cards and they were so cool, I decided to get some of my favorite Giants players and kind of got sucked back in. The new cards are really nice as they are serial numbered, auto’d, contain pieces of jerseys, all kinds of cool shit. I don’t buy many, just a few of the better ones of my favorite Giants players. I figure I’ll give them to my son when he gets a bit bigger.
And in 2008 I was watching Cainer warm up in the pen before one of his starts and it was dead, they were playing the Pirates I think, a day game, and there was hardly anyone down there. I had a ball and a sharpie and was getting auto’s (I have one ball that I take to every game and I’m trying to get as many auto’s on it as I can) and all of a sudden Omar Vizquel walked over and put his glove up, signaling me to throw him my ball, I threw it to him, he then had me throw him the sharpie, which he made a good grab on, signed it and tossed them back. That was pretty cool.

Collecting stuff is fun
I have a Willie Mays signed bat and a personallized Willie McCovey jersey. I wasn’t present for either signing, but I’m comfortable with the lineage to believe they’re authentic.
I decided to collect the entire Giants Topps card set from my birth year (1962). Once I completed that, I started working on getting signed versions so I have Gaylord Perry and Mike McCormick plus I got the Marichal one signed in person at the All-Star festivities here.
I have a replica program of the 1951 playoff game with authentic Bobby Thompson and Ralph Branca autographs on the cover.
For some reason, the in-person thing isn’t a big thrill for me, other than the complete assurance it’s authentic. I just kind of like signed stuff.

Plus a bunch of foul balls (Robby Thompson was my 1st), autograph balls from on-field promos (Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays, Noah Lowery, Todd Linden, Scott Eyre, Russ Ortiz, Matt Williams).
My favorite collectables (which I just packed when we sold our house in SJ):
- a Candlestick-era Stadium Club plate (old script logo)
- a hat full of Croix de Sticks
- a Croix de Gallagher (from Pat Gallagher’s retirement dinner)
- a Burns patch (RIP Sue)
- a reciept from the refund for my 94 tickets (got one from the sharks as well for their cancelled season)
Also the bats they gave out in the last years of the Stick for going to x amount of games—autographed by Bill Mueller, and—wait for it—Marvin Bernard.

I never got my refund for the 2002 season. Because, you know, it was cancelled and all.
