Now that Nick Johnson is signed...
Work with me on this one. Please.
The Giants have been linked to Johnson since the beginning of rosterbation season and offered him more money than the Yanks. But apparently he would rather win a championship than play in our hood. FIIINE. But we move on. I really thought signing Johnson was part of Sabean's "masterplan" for the offseason, along with snagging DeRosa and/or trading for Uggla. Now that Johnson is out of the picture, these are the names that have been rumored to be the mouth-watering options to beef up our "line-up":
- Mark DeRosa (LF/utility)
- Adam LaRoche (1B)
AdrainAdrian Beltre ($$$)- Dan Uggla (via trade)
- Lyle Overbay (via trade)
Scott Pod...s...
I know this is not ALL of the names that are out there. I mean, if theres one thing I have learned, its expect the worst from Sabean. Why hasn't there been any talk about Orlando Hudson?
I really, really, really hope that not signing Nick Johnson as well as staying VERY quiet this offseason is all part of Sabean's "masterplan" to swoop on Matt Holliday and call it a day. I can only hope, though.
Chances that Holliday will end up here...somehow?

this
pretty much. not getting Johnson is going to make this whole “improving the offence” thing a lot harder. I’m going to pretend that this is not Sabean’s fault (i.e., Johnson just wanted to go back to where he started), however generous this may be.
I thought I did see some rumours about our interest in Hudson during the winter meetings, but nothing too substantial. I don’t see how he solves the problem, since it would (again) mean sending Pablo to play first, where he loses value.
I started to get a little excited about the prospect of Johnny Damon on a 1-2 year deal, but Lefty’s link to the fact that ALL of his dingers went to the short porch in the New Yankee ends that interest for me.
At this point, if you are going to really revamp the offence, I think you have to sign Bay (5/75) and someone like Carlos Delgado (1/10). Holliday would be even better, of course, but I haven’t heard a speck of interest from either side. Just seems too far-fetched. Bay really may not be at all interested, and then I guess all you can do is sign a Byrd or Nady for LF, and perhaps bump up the 1B acquisition to LaRoche. Ugly. maybe, but still better than sinking a wad of cash or prospects into a Beltre or Uggla acquisition (respectively, of course).
Even better: use Voodoo on a Texas team to get us Nelson Cruz or Hunter Pence.

I thought “Adrain” Beltre was freudulently delicious too.

I wouldn’t mind a trade for Lyle Overbay. The Blue Jay 1b is on the final year of his deal and is due $7M in 2010. Prior to winter meetings there was scuttlebutt that the Jays were looking to unload Overbay. With the Jay’s recent acquisition of Brett Wallace to play 1b Overbay should defintely be available.
What is an Overbay worth?
Some players Giants should consider from the bargain bin would be Troy Glaus. Carlos Delgado, Scotty Pods, Russell Brayan. Juan Uribe
I'm down with overbay
Improved his OPS significantly last year despite a below average BABIP. Defensive metrics are uninspiring, but not terrible, and I’m not a huge fan of UZR at 1b anyway.
As long as it doesn’t take too much to get him, which is the wildcard, he’d be a good choice.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
okey dokey
let’s watch out for the guys in the third paragraph. Except Uribe if he doesn’t cost eleventy billion dollars.

It's not like 2009 was Branyan's first good season.
I’d only be concerned if the Giants gave him a multiple year deal.

Branyan’s career by WAR, 2002-2009:

No WAR for 1999-2001, but it’s not like his numbers were great anyway.
Fine
Branyan’s wOBA per year:

Average about half the time (5 seasons), slightly above average about half the time (6 seasons). Still not reliable production, and not even great production when he does well, just a little better than average.
LaRoche and Uggla are probably the best options

it'd be great if you guys could figure this out tonight
I’m going to bed, and it sure would be refreshing to see in the morning!
Have we completely given up on the idea of throwing our hat into the Adrian Gonzalez ring now?
Thing A
Beep Beep Beep
if SF is given the opportunity to sign AGon to an extension then Sabean could back up the farm truck
I tried to factor in everything, or as much as I could, here, to produce my current top 19 targets (it just worked out that way, I didn’t pick that number):
1. Dan Uggla – 30 HR power, his RH bat would play well in AT&T. Caveat: costs prospects as well as a premium salary, so only willing to give up a “meh” prospect or two.
2. Milton Bradley – Bad contract swap of Rowand for Bradley makes a lot of sense for both sides; Cubs have to pay more overall, but not a lot more per year, and get something back. Giants dump a bad contract for a worse attitude, but have had considerable experience dealing with talented prima donnas (see: Barry Bonds). Besides, we need offense in the worst way, and beggars can’t exactly be choosers.
3. B.J. Upton – Great buy-low option; of course, the Rays are shrewd and realize he’s still a great player even if he had a down year in 2009. Would likely cost premium prospects, but he’s not expensive yet.
4. Lyle Overbay – Good OBP and power, decent contract, Blue Jays are selling and would rather dump the $7M than keep the production. Same caveat as Uggla, and again therefore only worth a “meh” prospect or two.
5. Carl Crawford – No reason for the Rays to trade him other than the fact that he’s making $10M in 2010 (and is worth every penny) and is a FA in 2011, so it’s now, soon, or never to get something back. All-around fantastic OF, but very, VERY expensive prospect-wise in a trade.
6. Ryan Garko – Adam LaRoche’s equal offensively, though not as good defensively. However, he won’t make nearly as much money as LaRoche, and isn’t a long-term commitment, as Sabean showed by non-tendering him. It would be pretty weird if we re-signed him, but now that Johnson’s gone he’s an attractive option.
7. Travis Ishikawa – Power improved as last season went on, great defense at first base, still making major league minimum. If you’re going to get “meh” production, you might as well pay as little as possible for it.
8. Ryan Doumit – Down year in 2009 is another buy-low opportunity, and the Pirates don’t seem to be as good as the Rays in trade situations (but they can obviously still outfox Sabean, though that’s not particularly impressive). C/1B means he can spell Posey and Ishikawa, potentially solving the backup catcher and offensive addition problems at once. He’s going to cost more than Sanchez, though.
9. Josh Willingham – Again, expensive in a trade, but a .367 OBP and .496 SLG would look great in the cleanup spot. Not great defensively, but definitely worth more than he’ll be paid, and the Nats would be stupid not to field offers. Two more years of team control mean he’s a valuable guy, which is good and bad.
10. Joe Crede – Injury history and ???? drives down his price (even with Boras as his agent, the guy does not seem to get good contracts), making a minor-league invite not out of the question. Good defense, decent to bad offense. Basically a much less expensive and slightly worse Adrian Beltre.
11 Adam LaRoche – Good hitter, good defender, not worth $30M over 3 years. If he were looking for something in the neighborhood of 2/12-14, a solid acquisition. But likely overpaid for only decent production given his position.
12. Juan Uribe – Good defense at second base last year; even with surprising offensive year in 2009, he can’t command a huge contract. But it’s likely 2009 was a fluke given his age and previous production, and there’s a good chance whoever picks him up will overpay for a replacement level player.
13. Johnny Damon – Still a little speedy, still hits well, doesn’t defend well, a multi-year deal with an NL club isn’t a good idea due to continued defensive regression, Boras likely to get him a good deal. Not a terrible option, just not one worth paying a lot for.
14. Adrian Gonzalez – The big trade market prize, now that Halladay’s in Philly. Team-friendly contract? Check. Great production on both sides of the ball? Mmmhmm. On a team way out of contention, and therefore definitely available? Yup. Ridiculously expensive (trade talks here start with Bumgarner and/or Posey)? You bet. Gonzalez would be a wonderful acquisition, except our farm system goes from #5 to #25 in the process.
15. Orlando Hudson – Probably not much better than Uribe, and certainly not enough to justify the considerable discrepancy between what they’ll make in 2010. Like Crede and Uribe, not worth anything more than a one-year deal.
16. Jonny Gomes – Great power hitter, though surely benefited from the Cincinnati bandbox. Absolute butcher in the field, however, so likely a DH type. Possible he could survive AT&T’s small LF, but unlikely; there’s a reason the Reds non-tendered his .541 SLG.
17. Adrian Beltre – Has been a great hitter in the past, always stellar defense. But he’s on the wrong side of 30, and his agent is Boras, so he’ll likely be too expensive even with decent offense and great defense. Age and declining offense are also warning signs against a multi-year deal. A good option if you want to pay $10M for replacement level production in four years.
18. Mark DeRosa – Utility is good, decent hitter. But not a strong defender at any of the six positions he plays, and likely to get a contract out of proportion to his production, which isn’t good. Should probably stay away from this one, except to drive up the bidding if another NL West team gets involved.
19. Brad Hawpe – Better than Gomes offensively, just as bad defensively, would cost prospects as well as money, intra-division trade so more expensive than normal, available only because the Rockies have a glut of outfielders and can stand to trade one, but have explicitly said they don’t need to and therefore won’t for less than his perceived worth (which is much higher than his actual worth). Only go here if you’re totally out of options.
Other, not mentioned because they don’t make sense/aren’t available – Prince Fielder (Brewers have a shot at the NL Central/Wild Card next year, and need Fielder’s DINGERZ; asking price of somewhere around Matt Cain is rather high considering Cain’s contract and despite Fielder’s production), Miguel Olivo (worse than Bengie), Bengie Molina (is Bengie), Hank Blalock (just a big pile of nothing; hasn’t had a good year since 2004), Marlon Byrd (numbers away from Arlington don’t bode well for a new team), Russell Branyan (breakout season at age 34 is…odd, 31 HR going to be overvalued on the market), Carlos Delgado (he’s 38, he was hurt last year, though he’s likely the best of this group), Miguel Tejada (he’s 36, or maybe not; I’m scared he’s due for serious regression and will saddle some poor team with a deal paying way too much), Melvin Mora (he’s 38, and there are a lot of better options), Jason Bay and Matt Holliday (too expensive), Scott Podsednik (seriously?), Jermaine Dye (SERIOUSLY?), Vladimir Guerrero (SERIO-, well not THAT bad, but defense is scary, and hackertude unnecessary in already OBP-starved lineup).
People keep saying Branyan is going to be overvalued, but I don’t see it. He’s getting, like, zero attention from anyone but the Ms right now.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Don’t mind (at reasonable price): LaRoche, Delgado, Overbay, Glaus, Uggla, Damon
Don’t want: Beltre, DeRosa, Posednik, Dye, Hudson, Gomes, Blalock, Crede.
Hopefully we’ll sign a couple from the top list but I’m skeptical and think we’ll sign at least one from the bottom list.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
What about Felipe Lopez?
So what about Felipe Lopez? If we’re okay moving Sanchez to 3B, I see a decent fit. He doesn’t have the power Uggla has, but plays better defense and won’t cost anything. He’s still out there, right? I think a deal similar to what we signed Sanchez for gets him signed, plus there is enough left to get someone cheap to platoon with Ishikawa at 1B – say, oh, I don’t know, maybe Ryan Garko?
The thing I wonder is does Sanchez’ bat play at 3B. I mean part of his value is playing 2B, right.
No thanks, Felipe Lopez was good last year but he’s not likely to be very good next year as he wasn’t the previous three. I’m not sure he’s even an upgrade over Ishikawa.
Sanchez value is pretty similar at 3B as it is at 2B so that’s not a huge issue. The real lost value comes from Sandoval moving to 1B which removes most of the gains you’d get by signing Lopez.

When has Lyle Overbay (other than on McCC) been connected to the Giants?
say hey nation is the Ralph Nader of McC.-Xanthan
Tanner and Wilmin Rodriguez for Uggla and AAAA mulch (F-Lew/Frandsen/Ishikawa/Pill/Bond) for Overbay. Anything more is not worth it. We’d be taking on around $14M in salary, so the major benefit to the trades might be that it forces the team to go with Posey at C and Bumgarner in the rotation.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
exactly.
I’m pretty much in favor of anything short of assassination that would get Eugio Velez out of LF.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
I share the Anti-Velezianism, but Uggla’s bat is only average-at-best if he plays anywhere but 2nd or 3rd. And there’s also the trouble of convincing a guy who has been in the middle-infield his whole career that he ought to embrace a move to the OF. I do like leaving Pablo at third, though.
A) I don’t really care if he embraces the move – we’ve been running out some pretty horrible fielders in left for years now. He’s under team control for 2 more years and can build value over that time as an OF – it’s not like it’s a difficult transition. If he gets pissed and says he doesn’t want to move (because he’ll lose market value when he becomes a FA in 2 years), I’d be open to signing him to a mid-range deal (averaging $8-$10 per) to provide some financial security and shut him up.
B) Even if Uggla’s bat is only average in LF, it’s a HUGE upgrade from what would be thrown out there otherwise. And even if he’s bad defensively, he doesn’t lose much value – because Velez is probably just as bad (maybe slightly better due to his speed). Just like Freddy Sanchez is mediocre, but an enormous upgrade from what we had at second previously. That can’t be dismissed, because we’re not talking about overall value, but the value added to the Giants by his acquisition. By replacing Velez on offense and defense, we’re making a huge upgrade, even if he’s only league average in left.
The depth of my anti-Velezianism cannot be underestimated. If I were in control of the Giants, my first move would be to release Velez to insure he wasn’t our starting left fielder.

Even if Uggla’s bat is only average in LF, it’s a HUGE upgrade from what would be thrown out there otherwise.
This is a good moment to mention, yet again, how idiotic it is that John Bowker apparently has no shot a regular job. The MLE for his season in Fresno is quite a bit better than Uggla’s career line.
I’m his adoptive parent and even I don’t believe he won’t play himself out of the starting job.
The belief that EV will actually start the 2010 season in LF is as silly as it is hysterical.
EV is Benji all over again. When properly managed he’s a would-be contributor.. in Velez’s case, off the bench (or as a utility guy). Of course, he’s not properly managed; he’s been asked to do more than he’s really capable of… i won’t throw him under the MCC bus just because Sabean & Bochy are idiots. Does he deserve the starting LF job? of course not. Is he a decent bench player? absolutely he is.

What if They Don't Sign Anyone?
Would that be better or worse than signing one of the remaining free agents to a bad contract?
by GiantFaninDodgerLand on Dec 18, 2009 9:43 AM PST reply actions
Depends which free agents, whether they’d be an upgrade at all and what contracts they sign. Most of the free agents i don’t want aren’t really upgrades so i’d certainly rather us not bother signing them.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
yeah
I’m beginning to think that if we can’t get Bay, or make a deal for someone excellent like N. Cruz, we should just leave the outfield alone. Have to look into the Damon possibility again, though.
I’m not sure if the Giants’ even care if the player is an actual upgrade, they also need to sell some tickets and create a buzz. Johnny Damon would sell some tickets. Dan Uggla would sell some tickets. Eugenio Velez and Travis Ishikawa? The only thing they would sell is Pepto Bismol.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
sounds rather cynical, but I agree there’s truth to it. However, I was thinking of Bowker and Lewis more than I was Velez. And I do think they need someone new at first, whatever else happens.
Johnny Damon would become the Giants best OF hitter, easily.
