Why does that first comma look like a period?
I don't know about that, to the groin.

Yeah, that stinks. I’d probably be willing to offer him a two-year deal.

Gone at $5.5 million 1 year
6:13pm: The deal is now near completion, says Davidoff. Pending a physical, Johnson will agree to a one-year deal with the Yankees worth about $5.5MM.
Yep. Sabes is an idiot OR he can’t sell the Giants to any hitter. Free Agent approach is seemingly dead, back to organization destroy trades.
A bit over the top
Sabean offered him more money. Given that the Giants (and pretty much everyone else) refused to give Johnson a second year, I can totally understand why he’d choose the Yankees over the Giants: he started his career there, they’re a lock to make the playoffs, he’ll get to DH (less likely to injure himself)…
Are you’re suggesting that you wanted Sabean to vastly overpay for Johnson?
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
There is seemingly a premium that must be paid to bring younger players to the Giants over and above other teams
I just fear that we are back to disastrous trades as the only way.
by pittsburghian on Dec 17, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions
To clarify – you mean position players, right?
If so, I’d agree to a certain extent. But I wouldn’t say that the premium applies to the Giants any more than it does to around 19 other teams in baseball…

DH will make him seem healthier next off season allowing him to sign for even more money.

Whatever...
I don’t quite get all the angst over not being able to overpay for an average first baseman without much power who’s spent far more time on the DL during his career than on the field. Not that Nick Johnson wouldn’t have been a nice pickup, but I doubt he would have made that much of a difference and he hit fewer homers than Ishikawa last year with 200 more plate appearances. Not exactly the greatest cure for a power starved team. I’d much rather have Uggla next season.

I agree
Johnson always seemed like a trap to me. Hopefully this signing won’t cause Sabes to over pay for LaRoche now.

I’m surprised Sabean wasn’t willing to go to a second year to land Johnson. This leaves two possibilities. Number one is that he’s totally clueless, and number two is that he’s working on something bigger and he really wasn’t very interested in Johnson. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for number two, but each day I’m more and more expecting that it’s number one.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
Yeah, seems kind of dumb.
on the field stuff aside, Matsui had to be an ad revenue monster. Every time I caught a game televised from NY the last few seasons, the stadium was plastered in Japanese text.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
I know we all scoff at "clubhouse chemistry"
but they did win the WS, so why not just keep the guy for comparable money? They spend $500 grand just to power those silly gigantic TV screens.

The Damon-o-scope is whirring.
"It appears that Sabean is playing a game of chicken with Neukom wherein he elucidates the most outrageous things he could do as ML GM without getting fired." - cornball
The writers in NY are all speculating that Damon is going to sign with the Giants. He supposedly made a last ditch effort to stay in NY and offered the Yankees a two year deal. That was a hometown discount, and he’ll probably up it back to three years for awhile, but I think eventually the Giants will sign him for two. It wouldn’t surprise me if they do a Boras double deal and sign both Damon and Beltre.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
I really don’t see the market for Damon getting three years as the Yankees seemed like the only team that’d consider that. If the Yankees are truly out then i’m not sure what the market is for him given that nobody else has been linked to him. I guess he’ll be of interest to those teams who have decided against going for Holliday or Bay.

This is getting really fucking pathetic. Sabean is showing why he shouldn’t have been brought back. What a joke.
FREE BUSTER POSEY
When Sabean said he was going to be patient this offseason, I was one of the few who didn’t like the strategy. Edgar Renteria was a big time screw up, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to go into the offseason and strike quickly before the other teams fully identify their needs. Now that other players that could have helped are beginning to sign elsewhere, he’s probably STILL going to panic and overpay to get the players he wants. If he had struck quickly on Nick Johnson a few weeks ago, he would have had him signed already. The Yankees had mild interest in him that only intensified after Matsui left and Damon didn’t drop his contract demands quickly enough.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
I’ve never really understood why you’d have either approach to be honest, you have to take what the market gives you somewhat, and so should be prepared to take both approaches.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
if you go into the off season with a solid plan and know exactly which players you want, while you might wait for the prices to come down a little, you would know when to sign somebody and when to wait. It looks to me like Sabean, as usual, had a poor plan. His plan seemed to be to sign a catcher to replace Bengie, a first or third baseman, a left fielder, and Brad Penny. Penny seemed to be the only specific player he was after, because he hasn’t tried to sign another starter after he lost out on Brad. He looked for a catcher because he thought Buster Posey isn’t ready, and now that he’s seen the price, he’s decided Buster IS ready. He wanted Penny because he thought Mad Bum wasn’t ready, and now that Penny has signed with the Cardinals, suddenly Mad Bum is ready as well. He knew he wanted a first baseman, and he he sort of wanted Nick Johnson, but not enough to beat the Yankees’ offer which would have been easy to beat with a second year. Probably the only person right now who thinks he has a solid plan is the bowtie that rehired him.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
yeah
and compare with what Jack Z is doing up in Seattle. They just got Milton Bradley for Carlos Silva (you know, the bad pitcher with the bad contract).
I want to hit cleanup for the M's
with tablesetters like:
Ichiro
Figgins
Bradley
hitting in front of me I probably could luck my way into a ribbie
In hind sight I don’t think he wanted much to do with Johnson. Seriously.
Sabean wasted no time locking up the player he did want ( Fragile Fred) then he when into "wait" mode. Sabean could have had Johnson for the same price he traded for Garko. Once he decided Garko was not what he wanted he had already made his "tire kicking rounds" on Johnson so if he was even remotely interested he would have added him to the basket just like he did with Fragile Fred.

In all fairness inside like 24 hours the Astros decided to re-new their challenge for Sabean’s throne ( Dumbest GM) and give Moore (KC) some competition in challenging The Sabean.
