Rosenthal: Giants Haven't Given Up On Beltre
Either Sabean is demonstrating atypical shrewdness to pressure the Marlins to take less for Uggla or (in the more likely scenario) Beltre will quickly surpass Renteria and Zito for biggest albatross of a contract on the roster.

Beltre is looking for a four-year deal worth at least $40 million.
The Giants are also pursuing Mark DeRosa as an everyday third baseman.
both of these make me really uncomfortable.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis. To pass the time during the offseason I decided to try my hand at blogging about photography and music.
Re: DeRosa
read he has lowered his asking price down to 3yrs/$18M. He is getting closer to being reasonable.
From MLBTR comments on Uggla. Notice LF:
Giants:
Trade for Uggla
Sign Beltre
CF Rowand
LF Sanchez
1B Sandoval
3B Beltre
2B Uggla
C Posey
RF Velez
SS Renteria
Get to the playoffs with that lineup. Myabe trade for a bigger bat at the deadline. Once your in the playoffs, the pitching will destroy everyone else.
And this one is in refrence to BP 2008 Top prospects…
Goldstein needs to update that list…
Angel lost his right to be ranked after committing murder.
Alderson is not on the team anymore.
Bumgarner and Posey are 1 & 2.

Once my what in the playoffs?
I don't know about that, to the groin.

MLBTR never disappoints!
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

I might go 2/$12mil with an option year.
I just clicked on that, and it said the Giants’ have upped their offer to Nick Johnson to 5.5 to 6 mil for a one year deal. Interesting.
Yanks are apparently a serious contender for Nick Johnson. That almost certainly prices him out of the Giants interest range because obviously we’d have to beat the Yanks offer by enough to make him forego the automatic post-season appearance and the all the rest of it.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Even if we offer more money in a one year deal we also have to beat:
- No DH (he would stay healthier)
- No protection in the batting order
- No gimme HR
All of those are thing that will prove his value and allow a team to offer a 2-3 yr contract next off season.

I fail to see how Derosa improves the team at all. He’s not good defensively (probably equivalent to Uggla), and I think it’s even money whether he outhits Travis Ishikawa next year, never mind at the end of a three-year deal when he’ll be 37. On a relatively cheap (<=$5M) one-year deal to fill the Uribe supersub role (or hopefully move Renteria to the bench by putting Sanchez at SS), fine. Anything more, no. DNW.
I have it on good authority ...
I happen to know for a fact that Sabean LOOOOOOOVES Beltre.
LOVES LOVES LURVES him.
And I heard this straight from Larry Baer’s mouth. I had some awesome seats at a game last year, three rows from home plate and right in front of Peter Magowan. Baer came over to visit him for a couple of innings, him and Magowan’s guest—some old dude named Cepeda.
And Larry couldn’t be bothered to keep his voice down, so I got to hear about Sabean’s mancrush. I wish he spilled some more, but that was the only juicy stuff I heard.
Insert witty signature of your own choosing here.

“Sabean’s mancrush”, “Larry Baer’s mouth”, and “juicy stuff” all appear in this comment, and it doesn’t appear to be creepy slash.
I’m confused.

I feel the same way about Beltre that I do about all talented free agents...
It’d be nice to have him. We probably shouldn’t overpay though.
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
does it count if i have given up on beltre?

I was really against Beltre, but if it’s a 3-year deal, I am almost coming around to it.

I really wanted Beltre here a year ago. Then he performed so bad last year, so my crushes moved elsewhere. But 4 years? And you add…
1. Pablito plays third pretty well, positional adjustment, etc.
2. shoulders sometimes heal after surgery and sometimes not;
3. folks say Beltre was good in the steroid years and hasn’t had much power since
cheering for Adam Witter, who will hit bigleague dingers some day.
Still yelling "Go, Antoan"
I feel similarly about Beltre to Uggla. He’s a good player, and a year ago I thought he was a match. Now, I’d rather get a first baseman.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
Take away 2004 and then look at his career stats.
I’d say he’s an average to slightly better than average 3B. Yes, the defense would be great but Pablo moves to 1B. And at 4/$40 mil……………..it would be another bad contract. We’d also be crossing our fingers that last year was an anamoly because of the injuries and not the beginning of a career tailspin.
I’d rather take a chance on a guy like Glaus with a minimal incentive based deal than Beltre. I say pass……..
