Looks like Benjie would've been coming back on a 1 year $9mil deal if the Giants' would've offered arbitration.

this is horrible

any day this fool doesn’t sign somewhere else makes it possible that he re-signs in SF.

LET’S GO METS!!!

Oh god, I can just see him overplaying his hand with the Mets and watching them withdraw their 2 year offer.

Then he comes crawling back to Sabes and accepts a one year deal to PROVE HIMSELF and he hits .240/.280/.390, all at cleanup

His stom doesn’t hurt that much.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

But it’s a sort of a dull, prolonged hurt.

Utter frustration and futility.

Who the hell is telling this aging, fat, slow, tender-feeling catcher that he’s worth 20 mil over 3 years? He should just be glad some team is interested in his base clogging abilities and take whatever he can get.

I interpreted this the other way
Heyman adds that the Mets’ talks for Bengie Molina are at a standstill, due to Molina’s demand for a three-year deal in the $20MM range.

He would have rejected the arbitration offer so fast since he believes he’s worth 3/20.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

I really don’t think so, but you could be right. If his agent felt out the landscape and found it to be as barren as it seems, I think it’s probable that he accepts arb just for a quick payday.

by tyrannoman on Dec 16, 2009 12:33 PM PST up reply actions

remember, though, that players had only six days to accept or reject arb offers. If the giants offered arb, how likely was Bengie’s agent to suss out the real market for him in only six days?

I’m sure the agent would be able to get a pretty good idea. It’s not like he’s some know-nothing blogger.

Between the ribeyes and the clutch dust, I’d be terrified that an arbitrator would award $8M or $9M. It sounds like that’s close to the two-year deal the Mets are offering, so Molina would have to decide if he thinks he’d be able to do better than a 1/$2M deal next year. If he’s optimistic, he takes the Giants’ offer.

No regrets.

by Grant Brisbee on Dec 16, 2009 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

disagree

The market got I-rod 2 years and 6-million. If Bengie’s agent correctly read the market, he would have seen reason to hope (best case) that Bengie would get 3/20 – which is what he’s asking for.

The market changes once he's offered arbitration, though.

Losing a pick isn’t a negligible cost, even if it’s a 2nd rounder (as it would be in the Met’s case).

True, but I just think people around here are seriously underestimating the market for catchers this year… Or overestimating the collective brain power of general managers… I, on the other hand, think catchers are going to be well-compensated in this market because the available quality is SO low; and never, ever, ever, under any circumstances, think that Baseball GMs will cease to surprise me with their stupidity. Add it up and you can see why I think we should have offered him arbitration.

by tedfordfan on Dec 17, 2009 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

Well, they only had a week to decide. And Bengie is apparently still sticking to his 3/20 delusion, so I think we would have been ok. It would have been a risk though, that’s true.

Although, a 1/9 deal with Bengie wouldn’t be terrible. It might be a little overpriced, but not horribly and for a 1 year deal it would be ok. I’d rather have Posey playing from day 1, but it’s pretty clear the Giants don’t want that to happen. So, he should be in AAA at least until his arb clock is delayed another year and at that point the season will almost be half over.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

by marcello on Dec 16, 2009 12:39 PM PST up reply actions

No no no. I would not want Bengie hitting clean up for another year under any circumstances.

That’s an issue with Bochy though, not with Molina. And Molina would be worth a 1/9 contract, production wise.

It’s an issue with the roster.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

by marcello on Dec 16, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Who should, and when? Only 4 Giants finished with a higher OPS in a significant sample

Sandoval? No, because we’d just b1tch about whoever was batting third.
Uribe? At the end of the season,, yes, but I don’t really blame the manager for forcing a guy who played his way into a minor league contract to prove he’s not a SSS fluke,
Rowand? Heh.
Lewis? Nah, he should have been hitting leadoff.

VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

by Bhaakon on Dec 16, 2009 3:04 PM PST up reply actions

It’s an issue with both. If the front office were to re-sign Molina while Bochy is still the manager (and he is), they’d have to know how Bochy will use him. They’d essentially be signing Bengie to continue to be the starter for the year and the clean up hitter.

And not worth $9mil.

So Does Crone

Which sees Bengie’s last three years as only worth 1.6 WAR in total vs the 6.6 WAR Fangraphs sees.

by giantsrainman on Dec 16, 2009 8:33 PM PST up reply actions

I know Fangraphs WAR doesn’t include catcher defense. I forget whether it includes baserunning or not. Judging from that disparity, I’m guessing that it does not, and that’s most of the difference.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

by oldjacket on Dec 17, 2009 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

It includes SB/CS but it doesn’t include other baserunning. Given that Molina is below average at baserunning and defense Fangraphs WAR likely over-rates him quite a bit. That said it’s probably not enough to account for that disparity.

but that 1/9 deal for Molina couple with the massive arb raises would mean no movement on the free agent front at all. Nick Johnson would be as unreachable as A-Rod.
