Me too. My second choice is Hector Sanchez, but I get the feeling that I won’t get to vote for him, as he’ll probably get in before Tanner does.

Joaquin’s strikeout rate is a bit misleading, since he walks so many guys. He only struck out about 22% of batters last year, with a walk rate around 12%.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

by marcello on Dec 16, 2009 12:10 PM PST up reply actions

you could argue that Stoffel’s strikeout and walk rates are misleading since they came in rookie ball and ssA though. And though he had a BB/9 of 0.4, it was 4.2 his senior year of college (with only 9.2 K/9, vs ~11 and 14 the two years before) and scouts had a lot of concern about his command, control and conditioning.

True

I’m not voting for either of them right now, but I can see the argument either way. Not that it matters for me anyways, since with the way I vote and the way the polls are going, I’ll likely never be voting for a reliever. They’re all gone by the time I would place them.

I still haven’t seen any conformation that he’s lost velocity. Has anyone ever been able to find a link to anything that suggests as much? The way I took it was that people were theorizing that because his K-rate dropped, so had his velo.

It’s somewhat ironic to me that the three position players I have been most excited about in the Giants system are catchers. Panda, Posey and now Sanchez. Just goes to show that you have to be stud to catch.

I have high hopes for Gilaspie, and Adrianza is coming along too. I just want a (nother) position player to succeed. God knows there has been a long enough drought prior to the Panda.

i still don’t get how you can put peguero over stoffel

by sfoakbay on Dec 16, 2009 10:06 PM PST up reply actions

I actually like Peguero – I thought he was physically impressive when I saw him play in Augusta in 2008. It’s clear he has tons of potential. But that potential is SO raw, and he is so far away, that I just can’t place him above Stoffel, who is (I think) almost a certainty to be riding the Express train to Fresno this year, if not all the way to San Francisco.

Again, I suppose this is my “utility” bias, as opposed to “tools.” I don’t discount raw talent, and fervently wish the Giants to draft talented-but-raw players. But when I make my Top Whatever List, and choices like this present themselves, I give the nod to the immediate talent impact. And so, clearly, guys like Peguero (and RaRod, more to the point) have much more volatility on my lists. (btw, I’d rank RaRod over Peguero because scouts seem to think RaRod can eventually do anything on a diamond, whereas Peguero’s upside is somewhat less impressive).

Proud adoptive parent of Sergio Romo. Looking forward to adopting Justin Smoak.

by Lyle on Dec 17, 2009 5:48 AM PST up reply actions

I wonder if Peguero will be less far away than you think come opening day. Given the org’s previous extremely aggressive promotion of him and the 40 man thing, I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if they tried moving him to AA to start the season or at the very least move him there in May if he were to get off to a hot start at SJ. Not that I’d promote such an idea, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see it happen.

somebody like Peguero you’re ultimately looking for the tools to click in and some point. He does have a body that looks like it should have power in it at some point.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

Roger, I agree with much of what you’ve said. I was just explaining my reason for ranking Peguero rather lower than some other guys.

I thought Peguero looked like a real “athlete” when I saw him, and I still hope that he turns out to be our own mini-Jason Heyward. But from I hear and read, it sounds like that future is more nearly predicted for RaRod than Peguero.

Many at McCoven will place Brett Pill in the 20ish range. This is reasonable since Pill did not have his breakout season until 2009.

The Top 5 next year will be some order of Wheeler, Joseph, 2010 #1 pick, Neal (if he isn’t promoted) and Kieschnick, I’d guess. Frankly, I don’t think Pill could hit anything in the PCL to convince me he’ll ever be as good a major league player as, say, Ishikawa, so I’d always rate him accordingly.

This

Completely this. At this point, a player at a corner position has to have to ludicrous numbers in the PCL for me to be impressed. Maybe not ludicrous, but I’d want to see Pill more or less replicate Bowker’s 2009 in Fresno.

Travis Ishikawa hit .310/.370/.737 in Fresno (in only about 50 games, it must be noted). Bowker hit .345/.456/.596 in 2009. Something approaching that would get me interested, so I’d say like a 0.950 OPS seems like a reasonable threshold for him to achieve true prospect-hood. .300/.400/.550 would give him an MLE around .265/.335/.440 which would be just acceptable for a 1B if his glove turns out to be as advertised.
