Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Topics may include expanding the DH to both leagues, or getting rid of it entirely.

""There will be no sacred cows," Selig said on a conference call. "We're open to talk about anything. I've had this in mind for a long time. This is a very blunt group. I want to sit there and listen. If there's anything we can do to improve this game I want to hear about it and discuss it. I will be guided by what this committee comes up with. I have that much respect for this group." - Selig

why do I get the feeling when Bud says “I want to sit there and listen” he actually means nod off while drooling on the brand new navy blue suit he just picked up at Sears?

Why? It’s the equivalent of letting a random fan of the day bat in the 9th spot (with few exceptions).

I disagree

Many pitchers were good hitters in high school or even college, not just a few. And they’re also on the field for defense, they shouldn’t be exempt from hitting.

Moar STRAGEDY in the NL!

The AL is like playing hockey using soccer goal posts.

A baseball team gets 9 positions to field the team that gives them the best possible chance to win the game and they can fill those positions however they see fit based on the talent on their roster. It just so happens that one position, the pitcher, is so important defensively that teams choose to sacrifice offense to give their team the best chance to win.

I personally don’t believe that any one position should be singled out as special due to their lack of talent in another aspect of the game. Just because most catchers are slow doesn’t mean baseball should implement a Designated Runner.

Technically though, they can use the DH for any player in the field.

I’m pretty sure that’s not true.

They can. It’s just that you’d be crazy not to pick the pitcher as the person who gets hit for.

by speckops on Dec 15, 2009 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yep, you’re right.

I thought the HS & College variations of the DH (where, ahem, as a crappy hitter, I was once well acquainted with) were the same as MLB. As it turns out, MLB rules are very very specific about how the DH is used, etc.

by KrazyKrabMeat on Dec 15, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

Them’s is the rules. I hope Bud doesn’t play with that part of the game.

Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

by cain1rstballothof on Dec 15, 2009 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

I personally don’t feel that there’s a right or wrong answer to this debate, so I can definitely see where you’re coming from. But the biggest issue I have with the DH rule is that one league has it and the other doesn’t. If they chose to get rid of it in both leagues, or institute it in both leagues I’d be happy either way.

Personally, I’d rather have it. I’d rather not watch Randy Johnson flail at a fastball. While I respect the Matt Cain, Micah Owings, CC Sabathia types, those are too few and far between to make it worth watching the rest of the crappy hitting pitchers try to hit.

by Fresburg on Dec 16, 2009 7:22 AM PST up reply actions

I like that the leagues are different.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

The leagues being different creates an interesting dynamic during interleague games and the world series.

It’s the only sport that has any appreciable difference between “conferences.” To my mind, it’s the only sport that even makes the “conference” or “league” distinction mean anything. Is there are a reason that the AFC and the NFC are separate, except for that it creates a convenient tournament structure? You could have all 32 teams scheduled at random and get roughly the same effect, then seed them by record into two playoff conferences and have a theoretically more competitive post-season. It always bothered me that there was no appreciable difference between leagues in other sports. It doesn’t seem like the AFC and the NFC (or change that for other sports as you like) should be completely homogenized. They should be distinct. The difference should mean something. And I’ve always appreciated that baseball has a dynamic which respects allows for that.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Interesting perspective. I prefer uniformity—not sure what that says about me. For instance, I hate that NCAA football and the NFL have different rules. Or even worse—NCAA Basketball structure/rules compared to the NBA.

I posted this in the big thread, but it fits here

I think the best way to standardize the leagues on the DH issue would be to have the DH in both leagues but set a 100 PA limit as a DH, or something similar.

Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.

Arguing with the Umps

There is nothing more ridiculous and pointless than managers arguing with umpires. I really wish they’d do away with it.

Let them jaw all they want from the dugout, but as soon as they leave the bench they’re tossed.
