Now with no Cameron.. POLL: Bay?
Now with Mike Cameron gone, who alot of people were hoping was going to be the added outfielder (myself included), and other teams like the Angels getting Matsui, the White sox getting Pierre and the Cardinals almost re-adding Holliday, destinations for Jason Bay are dwindling.
I have been full heartedly against signing Bay since the offseason began, but I find myself as each day passes willing to accept it more and more if it were to happen.
So I am curious as to what all of McCoven's opinion is. There are obvious pros and cons with it:
Cons: Alot of the Giants big hitting prospects are outfielders, (Thomas Neal, Roger Kieschnick, Rafael Rodriguez, John Bowker, Nate Schierholtz, Francisco Peguero) who would be blocked for years by big contracts from Bay and Rowand.
We would have less money to sign those listed players long term, along with Linceucm, Cain, Posey, Sandoval, Bumgarner etc.
We would lose our 1st round draft pick.
Pros: Its an obvious offensive upgrade.
Im really wary with going with the 'fuck it all, lets just get a bat already' attitude. Or 'its not my money', because Im not 12 years old, and I know how having your payroll clogged up can hinder building your roster.
But if we were to go out and get Bay this year, and ALSO get Nick Johnson so we then really have a legitimate offense, I think I would try and squint away the other concerns and sit back and enjoy watching a good hitting team for the first time in 6 years. What about you guys and girls?

PODS please Sabe’s. Bay hates everything S.F.
I would love to get Bay.

This polls are silly. Would I like to have Jason Bay on the Giants? Sure. Would I like to have Jason Bay on the Giants for 6 years at $95 million? No. Without any parameters on the contract, this poll is worthless.

I’ve pretty pro-bay, but I’m now thinking the best case scenario for an offensive upgrade with the least amount of risk, is getting Uggla. One or both of F.Sanchez/Rent will almost surely go down for a lenthy period or just suck real hard, so a big bat in the IF is better suited than a big bat in the OF, at this particular point in time.
Plus Uggla would at worst only be a 2 yr. If he pans out keep him around.

Uggla is far more interesting to me. The Problem™ is I have recently come to the conclusion Sabean would screw the pooch on any trade not involing all bit players.
As for Fragile Fred & Renteria I would LOVE them roll the dice on Kelly Johnson. It might fail miseribly but for under $1.5MM the team could have very intresting piece as well.

Now that Brett Wallace is with the Blue Jays
I’m predicting a Lyle Overbay to the Giants trade coming up.
(I actually really like Overbay)
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
I liked him five years ago.
Not as much now. Although his numbers don’t look as bad as I thought they were.

I would be ecstatic if we get Overbay at a price lower than Uggla.
- 4 years/$24M (2007-10)
* re-signed 1/07 (avoided arbitration)
* $3.8M signing bonus
* 07:$0.4M, 08:$5.8M, 09:$7M, 10:$7M
7M / year salary dump from the Blue Jays? it will be cheaper than uggla as well. 2 years is the ideal contract for any addition to the Giants.
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
That is pretty strong case. 1 year $7MM that can’t demand much form us.

His splits are ugly but maybe the Giants could fine room for Guzman or some other RHH on the bench to play against LHPs. But it is an interesting idea, he can’t cost that much.

The guessetimates I’ve seen kicked around have been in the $8 -9MM range.
The cheaper part comes in the Jays would seem to be in the unloading contracts/ reloading the farm phase now and to getting most of the $7MM off thier books would probably cost us less then what probably would to pry Uggla away from the Fish.

I think the best way to phrase it is Uggla is less likely to decline. Going into his age 30 season he is far more likey to repeat what he has done than to sudennly bust out.

Yes. That’s a better way of putting. The others would have a tougher time putting up career numbers in the next two seasons. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Uggla do just that.

There’s no way that’s true. Bay wants to play where he gets the best deal.

I think Bay is one of those players i think would be a pretty bad signing but that i wouldn’t actually hate. He’s not going to be worth the money he’s paid and the team signing him will probably end up regretting it but my heart would probably over-rule my head intially.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
Honestly Bay isn’t very good, and like most free agents that come to the giants, it will show quickly. But who cares, sign him anyways, we’ll never get anywhere with Nate Schierholtz and Velez platooning.

then the next 3 years will have to give him like 45 million more to get him
Desirous of Matt Holliday and Dan Uggla since 2009.
With Cameron gone, I’m moving on to Milton Bradley as my hope for the outfield. Sure he’s an injury-prone jerk, but he’s a lifetime .277/.371/.450 hitter and the Cubs will pay you to take him off their hands. For two years at, say, $4 million/year, he’d be a big help.
he's not a free agent, is he?
Plus, there’s the, “A deal like that? For a player like that? No. Is that succinct enough?”

Something to consider...
The Red Sox fans love him, the organization has a ton of money, and they really aren’t the offensive juggernaut they used to be, so they could certainly use his offense. Maybe we should be asking why they don’t seem to want him back that badly?

I think it’s between the Mets and Giants’ for Jason Bay. The Angels may be in there, but I think they’ll be spending whatever money they have left on pitching to replace Lackey. I think the Mets are going to take a lot of crap here in NY if they don’t sign Bay. They’re already taking it for missing out on Lackey. I can just imagine the furor over here if Sabean said what Omar Minaya said today about Lackey. “I was going to talk to him tomorrow.” Good job, Omar.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

Hard to say. The Giants want to see a major league track record before promoting him to a full-time gig, so after September call ups in 2010, 2011 and 2012, with a strong spring training, assuming he doesn’t have a cold week at any point, and further assuming we don’t sign anyone who can play the OF in the interim on the unlikely scenario that Eugenio Velez doesn’t hit enough to hold onto his starting job… then, yeah, maybe 2013.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
