What about Marcus Thames as a possible free agent for the Giants? He's relatively cheap and provides power the team needs.
-- Steven O., Livermore, Calif.

What about Marcus Thames as a Hall of Fame nominee with Andre Dawson, Bert Blyleven, Roberto Alomar and the rest? That's overstating the case, of course. But anybody who watched Detroit's Thames belt two homers off Lincecum in a June 16, 2008, Interleague game at AT&T Park had to be impressed. I might not pursue him as an everyday player, but I'd definitely consider him to deepen my right-handed-hitting complement on the bench.

Sure. Just not for the Giants.

Atkins is such an ideal player for the Giants to pick up. The guy isn’t looking to be overpaid and is an exceptional offensive and defensive tool that the Giants could use to fill a huge hole at a corner of the infield.

Hmm, not so sure about the defense. Also, filling the “hole at [third]” would basically substitute him for garko (with sandoval moving to first also, some defensive change), which would make me mad.

Also noticed:
Haft said bowker went home with an injury. I remember reading somewhere it was that he didn’t feel safe/comfortable there or something like that. Can’t remember.

And the Giants offered bay five years? I must have missed that rumor.

Aurilia has about as much power NOW as Bay does. In his prime he was the Best Offensive Shortstop of the Decade.

not so sure about the offense either

Bowker was listed as having a strained quad, as I recall.

if Atkins showed up on a minor league deal I’d be happy about it.

I wouldn’t take Atkins on a little league deal.

Does he pick just the stupidest questions, or are those the only ones he gets?

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

From looking at the comments on site and sf gate I think those tend to be the best ones offered. Also it seems Haft has a need to tell dumber fans to STFU like the Uggla question

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

Yay Haft furthering the Sabean Line about players not wanting to come here.
The Giants can’t do a heck of a lot if they woo a player who doesn’t want to come to San Francisco. If you believe Peter Gammons, and most of us “baseball professionals” (see opening question) do, the Giants were prepared to give Bay the five-year deal that other teams were reluctant to offer. But Bay apparently has no desire to nestle where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars. And Holliday has given no indication that he wants to be a Giant, though his agent, Scott Boras, is obliged to rouse as much interest as possible.

Also DNW Bay on 5 year deal.

I have to believe that this is bullshit on Sabean’s part. If he signed Bay for a big contract, he wouldn’t have enough money all the mediocrity he desires at 1B, C, #5 SP, and RF!

Bay would be good offensively for the next two years but would horrid in both offense and defense for the last 3 (his defense would be awful all 5).

We could always pull a Beane

And trade him part way through, preferably with the heavily back-loaded part of the contract left to go.

No way — after he walked those two guys that one time, not being clutchy and all. His value was at an all time low. You couldn’t have given him away!

Well, maybe you could, actually.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

He probably thought that’s what he was doing with Bill Mueller.

The real solution

Giants should just petition to join the American League and sign Bonds to be the full time DH.
