It's so heartwarming when the plucky little underdogs make a move

Go Red Sox! You show those big, bad Yankees that they can’t just keep buying World Series championships! On behalf of the rest of us small-market losers, go out there and put a scare into those blackhearted Bronx Bombers!

Insert witty signature of your own choosing here.

Honestly, the difference in their revenue and ours is not that great (especially when taking their revenue sharing payments into account). From a financial standpoint, there’s no compelling reason why their payroll should be $40 million more than ours. Certainly the Giants revenues could support a payroll in the $105-110 revenue, and Boras may well be right that they would support a $120 million payroll.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

if add in the stadium payment for $20 to $25 mil, it would put the payroll right in that $105-110 mil figure you quote.

Are you sure the difference isn't that great?

This is a year out of date, so the Yankees have likely passed Boston for the #1 spot, but going to a game in Boston is about twice as expensive as here. They also own part of NESN, so I suspect that they’re making more of their TV broadcasts than the Giants (and probably using NESN to hide it from MLB).

I think Forbes had the Giants at about $200 mil revenue this year (last April) and the BoSox around $260 — and they use their fairly estimable resources to figure their way around those kinds of bookkeeping hijinx. That counts stadium debt payments for the Giants, but it doesn’t subtract for revenue sharing payment for the Sox which puts them about $15 mil (?) closer. Now you could say that $45 million is still a substantial gap, but it probably wouldn’t look that way to the grouping that’s huddled around the $100 million mark at the bottom. There certainly seems to be a good amount of leeway for payroll addition by the Giants (which really we know exists from the confirmed stories of for instance their offers to the likes of Carlos Lee which, had it been accepted would be increase our payroll the last couple years and going forward by something along the lines of $15mil).

Here’s the link. Though actually looking at the complete list, the bottom is about 40 million higher than I thought it was (Florida at $140 mil) which does make the $45 million difference between us the Sox more substantial than I was thinking. Still, the point that we have no real right to poor mouthing still stands, I think.

The seats feel like half the size (personal experience), but the park holds only a couple thousand fewer.

And the Giants haven’t filled their park in recent seasons, so the Red Sox out-drew the Giants the last two seasons.
