Time to Pick the Halos' Pockets?

Lackey went to the Bosox - that much seems certain. And if all this 3-way stuff is also true, it seems that the LAnaheimers lost out on pretty much all the pitching they coveted. Also, the Halos have signed Hideki Matsui.

So: Is it time to go after Juan Rivera? Would Durty bring a return right now above and beyond his true value? What would we demand beyond Rivera in a deal for Sanchez. Napoli makes some sense, but I'd rather have pitching coming back. There isn't an easy fit, but maybe someone can figure it. Rooooos-ter-bation time, C'mon!

Juan Rivera’s okay, but he’ll be 32 next year, has a career wOBA of .341, and isn’t a particularly good outfielder. Might as well sign Nady.

I’d actually forgotten about Nady. If we got Nick the Stick and Nady short-term, I think I’d be satisfied for the bats.

I’d do Aybar for Dirty. I really doubt they would, but “nothing they have is worth Durty” isn’t accurate.

just off the phone with El Guapo and he gives his full approval for you “to do” Aybar for him. All he asks is that you consider using some protection

Dirty plus Renteria for Aybar plus Matthews Jr.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 15, 2009 5:37 PM PST up reply actions

but thats another year of a bad contract, we cant afford to have an extra 10 million in payroll tied up for a useless backup outfielder, plus Aybar has probably reached his peak and seems like he will regress while Dirty is just scratching his potential

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

by TexasRanger on Dec 15, 2009 11:38 PM PST up reply actions

what makes you say Aybar, who is 2 years younger, has reached his peak and Sanchez hasn’t? The extra year of a bad contract wouldn’t be pleasant to absorb, but Aybar is a plus defender and his offensive stats have improved every year of his career as he’s gotten more and more ABs.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 16, 2009 3:43 AM PST up reply actions

Aybar has no patience or power and had a pretty unsustainable BABIP last year, i’d expect him to regress while Sanchez is getting filthier and filthier and few in the game can strike out hitters like he can

Rivera Vs. Righties

Rivera is basically an improved OF version of Garko, so on those random games vs. left-handed starters, he’ll be a big help. The Giants need a right-hander who can actually hit righties, whom you see much more often. Nelson Cruz is a nice name, but he’s too cheap for Texas to trade without expecting a decent return. His teammate Michael Young might be a better possibility; he’s pricey, though. I’d rather get him than DeRosa, that’s for sure.

Eliminate that pesky Dominatrix in one easy step. Step 1: Tell her you're a Cubs fan!

by TMOX on Dec 14, 2009 3:22 PM PST reply actions

Michael Young’s contract is crippling.

by tyrannoman on Dec 14, 2009 3:49 PM PST up reply actions

True

but would kick the tires on trading him for Zito

by wilriv21 on Dec 14, 2009 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

Even then, I doubt the Rangers would make that deal without a lot of $$ coming from the Giants.

by tyrannoman on Dec 14, 2009 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

yeah

I can’t stop thinking about Nelson Cruz

by BigO on Dec 14, 2009 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

thinking about how he’lll cost you Bumgarner will probably make you stop thinking about him.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 14, 2009 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

there is the problem of what the Rangers would want, yes, but it’s possible they’d look at Sanchez since they are presumably trying to win this year (and they have a ton of primo pitching prospects.) As far as I can tell, they have only 2 of their starting slots locked down.

by BigO on Dec 14, 2009 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

see, now you’ve got me thinking about Nelson Cruz again.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 14, 2009 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously

What do we think it would take to pry away Cruz? (disregarding his recent winter ball injury, of course.) I read one Rangers site that said they were none too deep in INF and behind the plate. Don’t think we haveuch to offer there. So Sanchez and…Bowker? Still not likely to be enough.

If the Angels are looking to counter the moves of Boston, Seattle and (to a much lesser degree) Philly arent they going to have a whole lot more interest in somebody like Matt Cain than somebody like Dirty? There’s nothing Anaheim would part with that I’d take for Cain (I’d want something ridiculous like Morales and Aybar with them also taking Renteria) but I dont think they are likely to focus on a 2nd or 3rd tier guy like Dirty now.

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 14, 2009 5:49 PM PST reply actions

probably right

in fact, they’re already rumoured to be looking at DLowe, and MLBTR suggests Rivera would be sought by the Braves

by BigO on Dec 14, 2009 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

that trade makes quite a bit of sense

Thing A

by sam23 on Dec 14, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

But for entertainment value, here’s a better one:

Atlanta gets: Zito 5/$94 million (4/$83 if they are lucky, but probably vests with the trade) and $60 million from SF
SF gets: Lowe 3/$45 and GMJ 2/$23 and SoS/Palmer/Bulger type pitcher
Angels get: Rowand 3/$36 and Cain 2/$10.5 from SF

Sorry, only way I can see getting rid of GMJ, and getting something remotely useful in return. But Matsui will probably throw this out.

SF would shedding $140.5 million in salary. Taking on $68 million in salary that is over in 3 years. And paying out $60 million. For a relief of $12.5 million
Atl would shed $45 million in salary. Taking on $94 million in salary over 5 years. And recieving $60 million. For a relief of $11 million
Angels would shed $23 million in salary. Taking on $46.5 million in salary over 3 years. with an increase of $23.5 million.

Big difference is we’d be getting a useful pitcher in Cain and a .700 ops player in Rowand. Angels farm stays fairly intact. SF now has financial freedom to actually have a chance to keep Linceum. Atlanta gets financial relief, and with their coaching staff, can possibly turn around Zito and in a few years flip him at $6.8 million a year.

If you can get 3:2 on a headline of "Giants Pitcher Assaults General Manager" at some point this year, take it.

We basically basically get worse by swapping out Zito and Rowand with Lowe and GMJ and then we give Cain away for 12.5 million dollars over 4 or 5 years?
Wow, where did you find this? I’m glad Angels fans think dumping a GMJ for Cain and Rowand would be netting them “something remotely useful” and that Cain is a “useful pitcher.” That extra couple million a year is really gonna help us keep Lincecum, its not like giving Cain away is gonna cost the team any more than that in wins and revenue.
