With Adrianza finally off the board, I’m lost.

Stoffel seems to be the best arm remaining, though I don’t see a whole lot to separate him from the others.

Sanchez and Peguero make a nice opposition — statz vs. scoutz. I guess I’ll go with the OBP guy.

by Evan on Dec 14, 2009 11:13 AM PST reply actions

Yep. I’m going with the guy who takes a walk. I just don’t see much chance that a 21-year-old who never ever walks is going to someday figure it out.

I still haven’t decided. I think I am leaning Hector Sanchez due to position and good stats, but basing a decision on rookie-league stats seems like a bad decision. Clayton Tanner would also be acceptable, despite the low ceiling.

The recent criticisms of the system have been that it is extremely top heavy. That is still the case, but it seems less so this time around—-even with the loss of Villalona making the top prospects even less balanced.

As I said above, among non-prospects having good seasons in the upper minors, what possible reason is there to prefer Pill to Bond? Bond is a year younger, plays a more difficult defensive position (albeit poorly, apparently), and is a better hitter.

Rohlinger is older than Downs is older than Pill is older than Bond.

2009 AA –
Bond: .335/.427/.410/837 wOBA: .374 LD%: 20 BABIP: .394
Pill: .298/.348/.480/828 wOBA: 348 LD%: 18 BABIP: .317

Rohlinger
2009 AAA .281/.350/.468/.818 wOBA: .353
2008 AA (178PA) .296/.354/.497/851 wOBA: 365
 - supposedly plays defense well at 2b, 3b and even can cover SS.

Downs (skipped AA in 2008)
2009 AAA: .296/.354/.497/851 wOBA 353

Does anyone really think Bond can be better than Downs or Rohlinger? Or that Pill will be any better than Ishikawa? I kinda agree with xanthan – they (all) kinda stink. We can play the “If-game” or have our favorites, but are we hoping for more than utility or average players from this group? I don’t really think Bond or Pill should go much higher than Downs did last year (22) and Rpohlinger didn’t even make the top 30. Meanwhile, the original-Downs and Rohlinger maybe deserve a bump.

Ishikawa (for further comparison and a couple of weeks older than Ryan)
2008 AA : (277 PA) .291/.379/.462/841 wOBA: 365
2008 AAA: (192 PA) .310/.370/.737/1107 wOBA: .448

I don’t think most of us consider any of these guys top prospects. But Pill is getting quite a few votes in this poll, which seems kind of nutty to me. So I made the point that Pill plays first base and wasn’t even the best hitter on the Defenders, so if you like him you ought to like Bond even better.

I also went Stoffel

but at this point, I think it’s just everybody’s personal prefence for certain players over others. It’s pretty hard to distinguish the talent.
Although I think Peguero is getting the Dan Runzler treatment.( getting votes even though most voters would have never voted him this high if he wasn’t in BA’s top 10). I personally don’t have much faith in a guy with zero plate discipline and no power to advance to the upper minors well.
I do think it’s fair that he is being compared to Sandoval, since it wasn’t until Pablo’s breakout year, where he actually showed decent plate discipline, that he was taking seriously as a top prospect, and that’s the same way I think we should we judge Francisco, Not that he shouldn’t be on the list, just not higher then 15 to 20 range in my opinion.

Sanchez did well in the rookie league, he’s 19, he’s a catcher. All very good things, even if we don’t know that much about him yet.

by quincy0191 on Dec 15, 2009 12:08 PM PST up reply actions

Well for one, you’re looking at two tiny sample sizes from the AZL and DSL, so any stat based argument doesn’t work because were talking about the lowest of low levels, and its not like 19 is execptionally young for the AZL. Its not that hes not a prospect, or i have any problem with him but there are at least 10 people in our system that are without a doubt more valuable prospects.

also food for thought, Baggs said in his BA chatwrap that Sanchez barely missed the top 30 prospect list. ill stick with what the scouts say over 324 at bats in the past 2 years in the low minors

BA also ranked edward conception over him in the AZL this year

Sanchez

You do know how quickly walk and strikeout rates normalize, right? And you also know that he plays catcher, right? And you also know that he got rave reviews for his catching in the AZL, right? And you also know that Waldis is a reliever with serious control issues and without the ridiculous strikeout rate that Runzler has, right? Considering what you wrote, it’s pretty obvious you don’t know these things.

by rotorueter on Dec 14, 2009 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

They’re generally pretty close to worthless due to the ridiculous spread of talent levels that will float through a rookie league over the course of a season. However, I’d say if you want to look at any stat at that level, K/BB might well be the most meaningful (for both hitters and pitchers) followed (significantly less significant) by maybe Iso power. I wouldn’t bother looking at much else, and ultimately the scouting reports are much more important for the Complex leagues.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I still can’t figure out why their isn’t more love for Sanchez from scouts. The only real knock I’ve heard on him is a soft body, but he’s a catcher…

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

He did land in the AZL Top 20 which is certainly some degree of love. But honestly, guys who spend the entire season in the AZL are so very rarely hot prospects, that it’s not that unusual to see. Mike Trout was the first player I remember in a long time who was really a hot prospect who spent most of the season in the AZL, and he was at least a 1st round draft choice. To come up with a player who was on the traditional DSL to AZL path and lit up scouts eyes, you might have to go back to Felix Pie.

Well, looking back over the last 7 years of AZL Top 20s, I guess Angel Villalona would have been the last super prospect who wasn’t a high draft choice, though as a huge bonus baby really he amounted to about the same. So yeah, I’d say Pie was the last time a player who was coming from an UFA Latin American background excited scouts was probably Pie (hey look, Jesse English, Carlos Sosa, and Travis Ishikawa were all in the AZL Top 10 that year. Matt Cain was #12).

But it’s interesting looking back to just last year, Starlin Castro was the #14 propsect in the league and was #7 in a very bad Cubs system (ranked #27 overall). This year I believe he was the #6 prospect in the FSL and #1 for the Cubs (still a pretty weak system), so Hector’s #15 ranking in the AZL is far from a scarlet letter. He could certainly put himself solidly on the prospect map if he has the kind of season in the Sally that his backers here are expecting from him.

I’m obviously pretty excited for his 2010. I have a feeling the only good Giants news next year will be coming from the minors.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

You know I think for the Christmas season I’m just going to sit here believing that next year will be all magical and fun and wonderful.

My Christmas gift to myself — before it’s too late, try very hard to not turn completely into my father with his personal perma-doom cloud.
