Hilarious: Dodgers resign Dreifort
Great post over at True Blue LA. The headline is
Dodgers Announce Darren Dreifort Signing at $3m discount
The gist of the article is that deferred payments to former players over the next five years are just about the same as the entire amount of the worthless 5 year/$55 millioin Dreifort signing in 2001.
The Dodgers are in serious trouble until they find new ownership.
A list of the amounts owed below the jump.
Andruw Jones $16 million (He certainly delivered value on that contract)
Jason Schmidt $5.3 million (Ha! The gift that keeps on giving)
Manny Ramirez $25 million (Whoo Hoo!)
Deferred signing bonuses to various players $6 million

This bothers me. Now will the Giants try and race to bottom again thinking a 83 win team would win the division?

This reminds me of the cap hell the Niners got themselves into.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
isn't pierre on the payroll for 2010 and 2011
for a pretty hefty amount also ?
Are the GIants done paying for BLB and Benitez’s deferred salaries?

I’d imagine we are done with Benitez. I think Barry had some personal services contract for like 10 or 15 years. I don’t know if you want to count that, but he’s still getting paid $5 million a year, I think.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
But BLB brought/brings revenue to the team.

Andruw Jones is one of my new faves, taking that dodger money like he’s post to.

I’m still pretty sure the money is budgeted in earlier years though, so it’s basically already been set aside and not impacting their present decisions….
I think that is only deferred bonus money. I’m not sure about deferred salaries.

I don’t that’s correct and it probably will have an impact. I remember in the case of Andruw Jones specifically that they couldn’t afford to sign Ramirez unless they re-structured his deal to save them money in the short term. Of course i assume that there’s quite often cases of deferred money and so some expectation of deferred money is probably accounted for in addition to the major league budget (along with draft bonuses, other costs, etc)

The man point of deferred money (bonus, b/c they are kept and fully funded at the time) is interest and inflation.

Well, other teams may do it differently but I feel like I’ve ready about Sabean discussing this issue specifically (probably talking about Bonds deferred money), saying they budget it in the year it’s “earned”, so essentially it’s set aside until it’s owed.

Yeah, It’ll depend on the situation and how you deal with the monies. I think you’re right that we probably do it that way in those cases, and the Dodgers may do the same with theirs. In the case Jones i don’t think that’s the case but i have no idea about the others (i suspect it might be the same for Ramirez but not for the others)

Makes me feel a little better about Zito's gigantic contract
At least he has won 31 games for the Giants in 3 seasons (still not worth the $$$ though) while Schmidt and Jones were/will be collecting money NOT playing for LA.
Win the inning.
If Zito makes the rest of his starts for the next four years that would actually be pretty good. Still overpriced, but there is definitely some sort of value to not missing a start.
