Uh, Jack Cust?

So the Giants just non-tendered Ryan Garko, having therefore traded their third best pitching prospect for 100 at bats of nothing.  But the A's just non-tendered Jack Cust.  Hmmm. . . .

Star-divide

Jack Cust does three things, basically.  He hits home runs, he draws walks, and he strikes out.  He's a bad defensive outfielder.  He could play left, or possibly first.  His OPS+ over the last three seasons is 146, 129, 105.  The Jack Cust of 2007 could be a useful player.  The Jack Cust of 2009 was pretty bad, though still 20 points of OPS+ better than our putative LF next season, Eugenio Velez.  Cust is also 31 years old, and wants a 3 year deal.

I'm a little interested.  I don't think he'd be that expensive, and i think we're talking about a guy with a well-established skill set which happens to coincide with our team needs.  Could also be that his troubles last year are the first sign of the beginning of the end.  What think you all?

Your remark in bold puzzles me, but I will skip it.
I’m not so worried about Cust being able to hit the ball out of the Phone Booth. 11 of his 25 homers last year were to the left of CF, so it isn’t as though he’s a pull hitter. And it’s not like the Coliseum is an easy place to go deep. Yes, our park is tougher on lefties, but it’s actually easier overall. For a hitter like Cust, I wouldn’t expect the difference to be significant.

by BigO on Dec 13, 2009 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, as BigO alluded to, it’s more that left handed pull HR hitters don’t belong in our park. As for Cust, defense. Plain and simple. Gotta play it in the NL. None of that BS DH’ing going on over here.

power hitters don't belong in at&t park

I remember this being said about Candlestick in the 70s and 80s, after Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Hart, BoBonds, and Haller demonstrated otherwise in the big strike zone 60s. Then along came WClark, Williams, BaBonds, Kent, and Aurillia. At AT&T, we’re not too far removed from BaBonds, Kent, Aurillia, and guys like Bell, Sanders, CruzJr, Durham, etc., who all managed 20 HRs while playing at AT&T.

If he can be something that resembles a defensive 1B, he might be an OK cheap solution at 1B. But really, it’s a crime against baseball to move him out of the AL.

If we want a one dimensional power hitter

why don’t we sign Mike Jacobs to a minor league deal
One year ago he hit 32 hrs and had 93 rbis in 477 abs
He just got released and he is cheaper than Cust, younger than Cust, and might have more power.
Just either give him a roster invite or a minor league deal

It’s sort of an inside joke between me and a few friends. One of my friends from Chicago is a big Cubs fan, and one day we were all making fun of him about how the Cubs sell stupid shirts like “I have a hard on for Harden” and one that says “Fuk u” on the front and "Dome"on the back. Naturally we started thinking of what the Giants equivalent would be, and the best thing we thought of was “lincecuminyourface.”
I thought it was funny but if alot of people find it offensive or anything I could change it

Jonny Gomes > Jack Cust

and will also cost about half as much

by Gobroks on Dec 13, 2009 2:49 PM PST reply actions

seems like an overstatement. Gomes may well be better suited to AT&T, but he hasn’t been the hitter that Cust has in his career. Gomes has also pretty inconsistent, though that may be due to lack of playing time. If UZR is a good indicator, they both seem to suck in the field.
