“hopefully I’m a better manager than I was back then, but it’s hard to say.”
Hmmm.

BORK
DL: The perception of your organization is that it isn’t very statistically savvy. Is that accurate?
BB: I would probably argue that a little bit, because of all the information we get. We have a tremendous IT department that gives me all the information I need [RBI, Wins, ERA, Runs], all the stats I know [RBI, Wins, VROOM!], but with that being said, I don’t rely strictly on statistics [SSS only] or managing by the book. I still believe you use your instincts, go by your gut, and do what you think is the best thing to win that ballgame.
In other words, yes that is accurate. And just because he’s getting information doesn’t mean he knows what to do with it.

To be fair though, only Boch can really evaluate a good vroom stat.

The big problem with that quote
We have a tremendous IT department that gives me all the information I need, all the stats I know
There’s no point in giving him all the stats he knows. He can look them up on his own. If no one in the FO is willing to learn anything new from the IT department, then it can’t actually help. I really feel bad for those guys.
I was promised lasagna.
IT departments are for fixing computers
Most of the new statistics have come from economics-minded people, not tech geeks.

I shudder to think of the incompetence we have making decisions for this team.
He thinks statistics come from the IT department. If they actually do, the org might be more screwed up than I thought. Unbelievable.
Can I shoot myself now or should I wait til May?

at least he doesn’t think the stats come from elves.

Internet Nerds.
I don’t know why the T stands for Nerds. You’d really have to ask Bochy about that one.

They should have asked him why Ryan Garko thinks he’s an asshole, and then ask him to somehow prove that he isn’t.

Bruce Bochy: Sometimes you’re called a player’s manager, and you wonder what that means, but if it means that I support my players, and that I’m behind them and care about them, then that’s my style. I believe in doing whatever I can to help them be the best players that they can be, and also the most productive players.
Unless you’re Ryan Garko and I hate you.
He helped Frandsen to be the best stopgap he could be!

of course, “whatever I can” may not include actually playing them.
